Yvonne,
I came across your website accidently, but I felt compelled to drop you an e-mail. Your childhood assessment experience is disheartening. Clinicians that use psycho-educational tests do so with the professional liability to ensure that they are measuring ABILITY and not DISABILITY. A clinician should use assessments to aid in determining how much an individual is capable of, and never to show how "little" an individual is capable of. Secondly, a test score should supplement other data and should not be used in isolation. It is a clinician's professional obligation to ensure that a score reflects one's estimated true ability and not merely serve as a measure of one's disability. I commend you and your mother for your advocacy.
Sincerely,
Amy

My name is James, I am 25 years old and a former IT student from Ireland. I have spina bifida and I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your site and the story "Yes, I do exist!"
The story brings a lot of relativity between us, even though we've never met, it's amazing how we can relate to each other because of our disability, albeit they being different as such.
I also read (some!) of your thesis on employment and can relate totally to that as well. Unfortunately (but hopefully not for much longer) I am still on the welfare. But my point is, I can't see myself doing THAT amount of work on a paper... EVER so I think it's great someone put it together like that. Anyways sorry for rambling on and possibly being patronising in that last bit.
Take care, maybe you'll write back?

Hello, my name is Carol and I have just joined your group. I am currently a graduate student in the counseling program at the University of Rochester (UR) in NY. I am doing an internship at Damon City Campus (DCC), part of Monroe Community College also located in Rochester, NY). My focus is on career counseling and I would like to connect with students with disabilities at DCC in hopes of developing my understanding of their struggles in this area, as well as perhaps creating a support network as they move through their college experience and into the world of work. In the process of all this I came across Yvonne's website (which is great!) and eventually ended up here.
I would like to be a part of your group and find mentors to help guide me along the way. If anyone in the group feels this is an intrusion, by all means let me know and I will discontinue my involvement.
Some additional information about myself. I am 43 years old and live with my boyfriend of 11 years and two cats (I am a huge cat person- we used to have the Brady Bunch equivalent of cats-6, but as time moves on so have my angels). I work at the UR providing technology support for classes and go to school part time. I am not big on talking about myself, but I am willing to answer any questions you may have.
I hope to read some responses soon. Thanks, Carol

Dear Yvonne,
I was looking up some information on speech impediment and found your site. I also have Cerebral Palsy but not to the severity or extent that you do. It was a pleasure to read your poems and an encouragement to read your articles. I want to say congratulations and encourage you to continue on towards your PhD. I understand your concerns regarding employment after you have successfully completed your college coursework. I attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and the supports for students with disabilities were excellent. But it wasn't easy to find employment. I have a Master's Degree in Rehabilitation and Counseling but, I had to prove to an employer that I could do the job. I sent out over 200 resumes and went to 60 interviews before I was hired by the State of Nebraska's Vocational Rehabilitation Agency. I just celebrated my tenth year of employment with them. I began as a counselor, next an independent living specialist, vocational evaluator and for the last four years, the office director in North Platte NE. Your ideas for online employment are excellent and I reviewed the websites that you design and manage. I am impressed!

I was looking for info on cerebral palsy, I have to do a cause and effect essay for english and thought maybe I could use it as a subject. I'm coming up empty for enough info for any subject I've picked so far.( My youngest child passed away 7 years ago, she had c.p., micro-cephalic, probably why the subject occured to me.)
Your sight got a little confusing to me at times, as if there are three different people involved in writing it...? Aside from that, I think it's great! I'm glad you are doing what you can to attempt to change things, and one small step at a time- things are changing. (Think of how it was 50 years ago...) Awareness, and exposure are definately the answer.
Good Luck in your job search.

Dear Yvonne,
I'm a law student doing research, and I was hoping you might be able to help me out. I'm looking for sources that argue that disabled individuals themselves, rather than their medical care providers, should be the ones to decide what risks the disabled individuals will take. So far I haven't had any luck, but I'm quite sure this kind of information is out there, probably on websites rather than in the news. I'd appreciate it if you could offer any help. Thanks!

Dear ms. Singer,
My name is Emma Petrack, and I am a senior at the Bilanguial School of Boston in Arlington MA. As part of our senior project, my classmates and I have been reaserching the following topic question: today, how has the city of boston adapted itself to the needs of its motorly disabelled population? It is through research on this topic that I have found your website, which has proved most valuable and inspirational to us. I therefore wanted to thank you for all your help, but also ask you a couple questions.
First of all, as I've said, I was amazed by how thourough your website is. I've spent a couple hours on it and there is still much more for me to examine and learn from it. The information is acessible, relevant, and well versed. Everything it talked about where issues that were so irrelevant to me a couple months ago, and your website has been an important tool in making me understand just how important these issues are.
Secondly, I have been having trouble finiding information on the following issues:
-We were wondering about the different cost of life for disabeled people, and if, on the other hand they recieve special tax cuts or grants. would you mind telling us a little about it or pointing us to relevant texts?
-Does the american disabelled population think that the government is doing enough to intergrate them into society? We have found many answers pointing to no, but were wondering if there were texts and articles we could quote and use to express these problems in a most accurate form.
I know this is a personal matter and you may not want to be open about it with strangers. But we believe that this project can be very important and inofrmative: our goals are to expose the issues and hardships of this community, something people aren't paying enough attention to. Your help would therefore be very valuable and useful to us. I understand email is best for you to use, therefore, please answer me if you have time. We would really appreaciate any help.
Thank you,
Emma Petrack

I agree. There is a perception that all autistics are good with computers, but that is a stereotype. 90% of us are unemployed or underemployed. It is very hard for us to get past the interview stage because if you cannot make eye contact you are immediately judged as dishonest. If you do make it past that stage, most workplaces are lit with fluorescents which are very uncomfortable for most. Employees do not understand that we cannot socialize and they get upset if we work too hard. They also do not understand that we are often very intelligent in many ways but there might be some seemingly simple things that are too hard. They think we are being silly if for example a bright person cannot answer the phone.
Jo-An Partridge
Hi Yvonne,
I agree with you wholeheartedly, however, we will never achieve becoming productive members of the community unless both State and Federal Governments ensure that access for the disabled to workplaces and all public facilities is ensured.
Computer literate persons can operate successfully from home, however, this should not preclude them or others from becoming a part of the community. Being able to work and participate in the community with other people is a great morale booster and goes a long way to helping all of us to accept our particular disability.
Many disabilities are not obvious and those people suffer from them are not able to use stairs or take part in physical activities, and are often faced with abuse when parking in a special parking space. As a nation we have to become more compassionate and understanding towards those who very often through no fault of their own become disabled.
Cheers Jo-An.
Dear Ms Singer,
I hope you don't mind me contacting you but I have recently read your article on The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and found it of great interest.
I had read about the PPVT in a book called "One Child" by Torey Hayden and thought it might offer a solution to a problem we're having with my disabled daughter. Jenny is 10 and has quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. Although she has some trouble with pronunciation, her speech is understandable and her vocabulary is extensive. The problem we are having is with written letters, words and numbers and jenny not being able to recognize them. We know that Jenny is very bright but we can't understand why this has alluded her. She can count and has the capacity to learn new words and can start using them in context almost immediately.
Do you think the PPVT might benefit Jenny or can you suggest any other learning system that might help?
Here in the United Kingdom, I feel we are behind the United States in many areas involving cerebral palsy and I am eager to follow up with anything that might be useful from your side of the pond.
Many thanks for your attention.

----------------------
Dear Yvonne,
Just wanted you to know that I've had your link on our site at http://www.readingsuccesslab.com/ResourceDirectory/Personal.html for quite some time.
Best wishes to you,
Dear Yvonne,
I am a mother of a 16y/o who takes about 5times as long to complete work as his teacher expects. Here in outback Australia we have not been offered any assistive technology by our public school but through wonderful people like you who share their story we find the leads we need to find the technology that goes toward overcoming the disabilities we experience.
Yes I agree with the sentiments about the use of assistive technology
being employed in more imaginative ways than perhaps the public school education has thought of. Yes I agree with the sentiments that systems need to change more rapidy to accommodate our expectations.
I have found that people with challenges have a more imaginative way of
making things work, for instance if you have seen or used the WYNN3.5 the program my son uses to read and write. Some teacher suggested that the school would have to buy a $20000 scanner unit. So I suggested saving My sons work as a pdf file and using a $40 thumb drive or USB drive to accomplish the same result.
So our challenges are minimized by our imagination sometimes.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. You encourage us all
to be more imaginative and consistantly persitant.
Please keep going; you impact positively on more lives than you might expect.
God bless you,
Dear Yvonne,
Congratulations on your teaching position and your
new course! I admire your persistence and
determination in the face of adversity. Your message

I love your heading, too. It reminds me of the

Sincerely,
Dear Yvonne,
It has been a true pleasure to get to know you. I enjoyed your web pages immensely !

Stay strong, and ignore the idiots in the osteogenesis group. They are not worth the bother.
Happy New Year to you.

Yvonne, indeed, it is always good when people with physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities gather and speak with a united voice.
Jealousy, however is part of human nature! Feelings intensify when people believe they are superior to another population group. Raised to feel they are better than "them" they see us and have a "pity party" reaction!
Then they confront their own goals and perceive inadequate achievements! To compensate for their feeleings the accompishments of
others must be the "fault" of people who achieve!
So here is my New Years Resolution:
We decide to do the best we can for ourselves, let other people live their own lives, and do some good where we can.

Yvonne, sorry that I am so long in replying. I know I don't have to explain the pressures of finals to you but quite frankly Neuroscience really did me in this past semester. The article was a great help to me and I was thankful you had made it available online. Having a "real-life" reference was just what I needed to add depth to my paper and it sparked a discussion in class (Tests and Measures) as to the validity of tests like the Peabody if we make assumptions and use them in ways they were not intended to be used.
I hope you have a happy new year. Joanne Christodoulou

Dear Yvonne,
I came across your letter " Yes I Do Exist" while researching information about adult cp and what a person with this disability has to deal with. Your letter gave me some unexpected insight into this and I must say I truly appreciate your courage and determination to not let this disability keep you from learning and wanting to pursue a career. The reason why I am actually researching information about this disability is, that I have had the great fortune to meet someone on the net who is a wonderful person and also has this disability. I would love to have you chat with me and give me a little more personal insight into what my friend deals with on a daily basis.
I respect your courage and determination, keep it up and don't let the ignorant people who do not have an ounce of compassion deter you from your goals.
Sincerely,
Ms. Singer,

I was so touched and inspired by your story. I found your story from doing a search on Google for ‘top schools and special needs’. I have a daughter, Olivia Rose, who was diagnosed with Down Syndrome when she was born. She is turning two years old next week, on May 15th. Similar to you, Olivia already has people saying what she can and cannot do. She was only a day old, fighting for her life in the NICU when one of the doctors came into my hospital room and told me that she will never go to college, she will never marry, etc. I looked at the doctor very sternly and said, “My daughter is only a day old and you are telling me what she will and will not do, I think we should leave that up to her don’t you think?” Then, I asked for him to leave.
I know she is so young still, but she is already showing a love for learning. She loves books and would rather sit and look at a book then play with a toy. She already recognizes about 10 letters of the alphabet. I am a school teacher by trade and there are a lot of typical kids who enter kindergarten that don’t know there letters! I was wondering if you had some words of advise for a mother that is raising a child with a disability who is already showing a miraculous ability to learn. I want to make sure that she is challenged and challenges herself. I don’t want her ever to feel that she can’t accomplish anything.
Congratulations on all of your success and I wish you well in all your future endeavors!
Very Truly Yours,
Tracy
Yvonne,
A colleague who is attending Monmouth University just shared with me the winter issue of Monmouth University magazine. We are both taken aback!! What an incredible use of your time, talents, intelligence, and determination! Not that this should be a surprise. You persevered just as boldly as humanly possible when you were getting your A.A.degree at Brookdale Community College. Those were the years before we acquired the 200-computer Information Commons that we have now: You worked the hard way then, manually, with photocopied pages.
When you completed your studies at Brookdale, you left us with one of your first writing accomplishments from the soul, a huge, humane article in the college newspaper, The Stall. And that was just the beginning!
I am so happy that you have been rightfully hired as a college professor. Your writings and insights are stupendous, and with your continued enthusiasm and determination, you are impacting a world of friends.
Best regards and love to you and your mother,
Yvonne:
My name is Skip Carey, and I?m the Director of Disability Services at Monmouth University. I started here last December, so I?m still somewhat new to MU. I just finished reading an article about you in the most recent issue of MU Magazine, and thought I would contact you to let you know how much I admire all that I read about you. You truly are an example of both personal and academic achievement, and a wonderful inspiration to others! I'm so glad to hear you're teaching for Middlesex County College and involved in the educational experience of students in higher education, that's great!!
I asked the other people who work in my office if they know you, but unfortunately, they started working here after you graduated. I believe David Nash was the director when you were here. Do you know him? If so and with your permission, I'd like to contact him at County College of Morris where he now works to let him know what you're doing. I'm sure he'd love to hear about your accomplishments. Feel free to email me back if that's okay.
Have a great weekend, hope to hear from you!

Hi Yvonne,
Thanks for making such a comprehensive and amazing website. Im doing a
school project on People with Disablities and your website has helped
tremendously. I've read a lot including your essays and personal info.
I just wanted to let you know i think your an amazing person with a
whole lot more heart then most people. Its unfortunate how segregated
people are in this world. We need people like yourself to believe in
and learn from. Thanks!
Sincerely,
Chris Novello
Thank you both for sharing your inspirational victories

Yvonne, I would be honored to add your link to my web page.
Please consider doing the same for mine below...

Hi,
I'm writing to you because we share something in common: disability. What you have of interest to me is your insight. My website, Disabilities Unlimited, is my way to help educate, motivate, and inspire others. Through humor and positive stories and information, I want people to truly understand that having a disability is nothing more than looking at a challenge slightly differently.
On my website, among other areas, is the Dialog area. I'm looking for someone like you who would be interested in not only reading my website, but interacting and sharing your stories, challenges, and inspirations.
You can contribute as much or as little as you want. The website is constantly growing and I'm adding new things all the time. Help me build a site that will give people the correct perspective about people with disabilities. Thank you for your time.

Hello Yvonne,
My name is Cheryl Young. I teach special education in a small rural school in Tennessee. Currently my students are learning disabled or language delayed- these are, of course, the "labels"- but they are the most determined and courage-inspiring kids I will ever meet. Since I have always been a fan of putting myself into new situations...I am now in the fourth week of my first ever on-line course through my school
system.(fThis is where I came across your page) Boy, do I ever admire
people who can come up with this kind of stuff! I have studied more hours- VOLUNTARILY than in any other type of course I have ever taken.
Consequently, I have gained a whole new way of looking at the world. It
will definitely change the way I teach from now on. Maybe I need a
mentor...You see.I am 45 years old...and not a real computer whiz. I am so impressed with how your resume is interactive. and the banners are very cool. I would like to teach some of my kids to do that! Any ways, I just wanted to wish you luck and to say that even old dogs like me can learn new tricks.
Hello
i am kinda lost in all of this.. don't tell any one everyone thinks i have it all together.. :)
I noticed you link to lavalife.com on your webpage http://home.att.net/~ysinger/indexa.htm. I just read your web page. Wow, I'm very impressed with your accomplishments and your attitude toward life.
I am a quad with CP since birth. Like you I consider myself very lucky and have over come many of life's challenges. I have been employed full time by the federal government for 29 years and as a program manager for 11 years. I currently use a laptop with text-to-speech on my power chair, a pencil on the keyboard and a trackball for mouse functions. I drive a full size van with handcontrols and a wheelchair lift. My wife and I have 2 children and 3 grandchildren. I maintain my home including almost 8 arches of land. I plan to retire in September 2007 and am considering some type of consulting business for people with disabilities looking for ways to do daily living activities by simple unconventional methods that many times the "professionals" don't think of. However, much to my disappointment I'm finding more and more people with disabilities are not willing to try harder, but are more likely to be satisfied saying "I can't do that". I also considered writing a book about solving daily living frustrations through unconventional methods. Do you have any thoughts?
Scott
PS you said you use a head stick to type. Do you use any word prediction or shorthand software to cut down the necessary key strokes?
Dear Yvonne,
My name is Mollen Garikai, I'm 28 and I'm from Zimbabwe. I have Cerebral Palsy and right now I'm studying Information and Technology at a local college. I'm struggling with many things and would like communicate with you. I will share a lot with you when I get your reply.

You go girl. People can only destroy you if you let them.
At 61, I am working on my masters in special education, reading specialty and have hopes to survive long enough to complete a Doctorate in Non-Profit Management.
Good Afternoon,
Congratulations (!!!) on your teaching appointment at Middlesex County College, Edison, NJ. I believe you took my PSYCH 105 (Intro. to Psych. I) course at Brookdale in the early 1990s. I'm VERY pleased that you continued your academic dream and went on to earn a master's degree -- WOW!
I, too, had the pleasure of working with John Gutowski at Middlesex. John's a wonderful academic and person. Again, congratulations on your professorship at MCC.
Best regards,
Scott

Would you be willing to be my pen pal and mentor, and can you give me any advice about how to achieve these goals? Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. I just read through the Oct. 2006 New Mobility (yeah, i'm a little behind) and I read the employment article that had a feature on you. Not only do we have the same last name, approximately the same age (i'm 38), but we share the same field (I have my doctorate in clinical psychology). Oh, and we also have the same positive outlook on life (I'm a quadriplegic, injured in an automobile accident 18 years ago).
