Yvonne,

I'm well aware that you live several thousand miles away from me, so be sure that I am NOT trying to seduce you. However, I do have a slightly bizarre request... I'm trying to start a business of offering "executive" massages to men with a range of disabilities/impairments- from stammers to autism, spina bifida to cerebral palsy etc... I would be incredibly grateful for any practical advice you may have- about anything at all which you think might be useful- from the wording of the advertisements to the actual "product" itself.

I am not a druggie, a pimp or a weirdo, I'm just trying to fund my degree (which, quite coincidentially, is in Psychology).

Look forward to hearing from you,
Frankie xXx

Yvonne, I was looking for something on a VERY MINOR, non-invasive stupid problem of mine and I stumbled onto your site. You seem like just AN AMAZING person! You seem to demonstrate the courage and character that only hero soldiers get credit for! SO I took the time to say HELLO and offer you my profound CONGRATULATIONS (and we have NOT met)! I live in NJ, commuting into NY City each day by NJ Transit. I work up near Central Park. I don't even expect a response from you so this is just a friendly HELLO to someone I quickly admired EVEN THOUGH we have never met! All the best, YVONNE and keep on slugging on! YOU MUST PROVE TO BE AN INSPIRATION TO MANY PEOPLE YOU NEVER EVEN REALIZE YOU'VE TOUCHED IN A VERY POSITIVE WAY ! ! ! All the best, Yvonne ! SIncerely, Paul Grimes

Whew! I got lost in your site. I clicked on the 2nd part of your site before turning off the music and after about the 5th run thru I was going nuts. I wanted to go on, but had to close it, in hopes it would shut off... That is how I saw the control on the 1st screen. I suggest an "onFocus" script, I forget the actual Javascript/command might be onFocus tag, but, for when your 1st page is not on Top, it can shut off, or mute the Pomp & Circumstance, letting your visitor browse at their leisure, or you could target your bottom window. I know you're proud of graduating, I'm proud of the BA I got this May, in Psych too...:)

My name is Rene. I came across your "World" on the board. I was impressed by your academic work. All I could think was, "Oh my, to be young again and have so much spirit!" You really have a lot going for you. Please never stop learning or writing.

I teach a Women and Disabilities class at Portland State University, Summer Session and do workshops on the subject as well. The term is coming to a close. May I intrude on you to use some of your writing next year? I will, of course, be more specific when the term is closer to starting and will accredit you with being the author.

I do know you mean well--but I don't like the idea of a person having to be ``productive.'' I don't even know what that's supposed to mean. My son is nine years old. He produces love. He produces joy. He may never produce a single useful ``thing'' in his life, never perform a necessary ``service.''
And he's really high-functioning, too.
Having a disability should not prevent anybody from being appreciated for their intrinsic worth as a human being.

Best, Jess

Will someone please, PLEASE point out for me ONE PERSON (parent) who treats the disability and not the person? And can you please, PLEASE explain to me the criteria for when the line gets crossed over? Also where, WHERE does one acquire the mind-reading skills necessary to make such judgments of other people's motivations? Autism is tough enough to deal with, who needs the burden of other's idle sanctimonious moralizing on top of it? It ain't me..

Yvonne, I'm sure you mean well. These parents on this email list are trying to help their children achieve the most that they can possibly achieve. I'm sure that's what you have in mind, also.

However, the kids are developmentally disabled and challenged in many ways, both mentally and physically. There is a difference between a person who can't learn language and a person who can't speak due to physical disability.

Thanks for all the cheerleading you are doing. I'm glad to hear that you have succeeded so well in the academic world.

Dear Yvonne,

Matawan is only an hour or so from Budd Lake. If possible I would like you to meet my daughter Maria.

We are looking to partner with other individuals with or "without disabilities" to establish MCCT. On our site http://www.mycommunitycareteam.com/ there is a good article on what we are trying to do with MCCT.

If after reading the article you would like to be involved in turning the idea of MCCT into a reality, we would welcome you on board with open arms.

Maria is very anxious to have MCCT become an incorporated entity. We need persons for the board of trustees and we need a good webmaster. At this time we are not incorporated and do not have any funds so any efforts would have to be on a volunteer basis. We plan to be incorporated in late October or early November.

We hope to be able to at least reimburse our volunteers for their expenses after we are incorporated and have more possibilities to explore fundraising.

Whether you are able to work with us or not I would like to keep in touch. Maria and I want input from the disability community at large in forming and running MCCT to make certain we do not stray from our goal to support and empower individuals with disabilities to have true choice options in directing their own lives.

I enjoyed your sites. I have added them to my favorites list. Maria and I hope to meet you soon.

Kind Regards,
Frank

Do you wish to own a group, or to moderate a group. You may start your own group, I'm not sure of the costs, you should talk to David Brock about this. Moderators are always being looked for on the many groups I belong to. I would say join the groups for your interests, and then ask the moderators if they need more moderators, or if they are ready to give it up, and this may accomplish what you are looking for. Six of the groups I belong to, are looking for moderators, these are mostly Christian Groups, with one political group also looking. God Bless Love Jonathan

From your pictures (especially seeing you need to use a headpointer to type) I figured your disability had to be very severe. I hadn't realized just how severe till now. Your description helps me somewhat, though, like you say, it's still impossible for me to fully understand and empathize. But I'm trying--and I will stay your friend for as long as you find me conducive to good company (*smile*).

I tell my students how computers have been such a boon to people with disabilities of all kinds. How truly trapped you'd be without them. Yet there's a cruel side to computers for folks like yourself, since they open up all kinds of possibilities (such as online teaching and so forth) which must still be hard to do unless people have faith in you and give you a chance.

The difficult part for you with online teaching would be doing it the first or second time--getting set up. That's always the toughest time for a teacher--teaching a new course. The amount of paperwork involved--typing up materials, curricula, syllabi, handouts, etc.--would be daunting for you since you type so slowly. Then, once you had an online course going, you'd have to attend to a stream of email which would be very challenging, depending on how many students you had in the class. Plus, you might be expected to hold chat sessions where you'd need to be able to respond fairly quickly to real time conversations.

How woud you manage with that? There are only 24 hours in the day and you have to sleep (*giggle*). One solution would be for you to have a friend work with you as your typist, and you'd dictate your answers and your emails.

After a couple of times in a course, you'd have a set of responses that you could have ready and simply copy and paste, as you may have done for some of this email you sent me today. That would be the sensible way to go. I do that all the time to save me time.

You could definitely do the job at least as well as some profs do their jobs. Most of them don't have teacher-training after all and they certainly don't appear to learn much about how to do it from experience! I know professors who've been truly pathetic for their entire 30+ year career. In other words, the argumant that you need training to teach an online course doesn't hold water. Any training you needed oyu could read up yourself, and chat with other teachers who could share their experience with you.

Ah well we'll continue our chat over time. This is enough for now :)

Bernie :)

My little sister, who has Cerebral Palsy, asked me to look on the Internet to find newspaper articles on anything involving the brain effects on CP. She needed it for her Psychology course and when she went online she was unable to find any.

So, that is how I came upon your site. I am forwarding your site to her so that she can hopefully be inspired by you as well. I know that my sister is an inspiration to me. She is 23 years old and is going to college right now to earn a degree. I am sure that if you have the time to talk to her via e-mail you would help her understand that she is not the only one.

Thanks for your time,

Dear Yvonne,

Now that my test message has not bounced back to me because it was sent to an invalid address, I can feel free to write in detail to you.

As a psychology major, you may find it interesting that I sustained a very serious TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) 21 years ago while I attended a university in Pittsburgh (I was 20 years old at the time). A car struck my bicycle when I made an unexpected turn. As my coma passed its second month, the doctors in the hospital wanted to give up and transfer me to a nursing home. Luckily, my mother, who flew up when she heard how seriously I was injured, interceded for me and I was instead moved to an advanced rehab hospital.

If you want more details about my TBI, its effects, my recovery from it, or my current lifestyle, go ahead and ask away. You also may be interested in where I was born and live now. I live in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Aloha,
Steve

PS the first four letters in my email address are my first name without any vowels and my two middle initials.

It is very hard to get back in the workforce after becoming disabled. I am a 30 year old female. I became disabled April 2, 1996. I have no schooling besides finishing school. I want to get back into the workforce. Something to do with horses. They are a big part of mylife. For about 27 years. Traing them since I was about 13 years old. Do you know of any help out there for me? I'd be willing to do anything if I could get a good paycheck.

My name is Debra, I am a student at the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY. I want to start out by telling you that I have never once actually read a stranger's personal webpage. However, first because of necessity, then because of sheer desire, your page became an exception.

I am an English major, and one of my requirements is a writing course. I am currently taking a Creative Nonfiction class, and one of the essays we had to write was a "Confessions of a (blank)" essay. At first my friends were encouraging me to do "confessions of a catholic schoolgirl", but something about that did not seem right to me. I had a little trouble thinking of something and it was purely accidental how I came up with my topic. You can read about how i did it in the essay that I attached, but I decided in the end to do "Confessions of a One-Day Handicap". Then, even after that, it changed again. I told my teacher I wanted to opt to do a different style of essay, and I did mine in reporter mode.

What I wound up doing was going out into the mall for a day in a wheelchair. The experience was unlike any I had ever had before. (Again, you can read about it in the essay, although I did not put in anywhere near as much as what the entire day consisted of.) When I was actually writing the essay, I somehow stumbled across your page. At first I was just glancing through to get some ideas from a first-hand account, but then I began to read some of the things about yourself. And just jumping from page to page, I began to gain so much of an appreciation for things. I have always considered myself to be pretty compassionate, I volunteer with troubled teens and hope to one day work to help provide some sort of stability in children's lives. Yet I can sadly admit that I have never once considered to volunteer for the handicapped. Or even worse, I have never even reached out to befriend one. Not to say that I ever completely disregard them, or that I am not friendly if I do talk to someone, but I feel as though I am somehow lacking now. I don't really know what compelled me to write to you, but I really wanted to do so. Your accomplishments astound me, and it makes me realize how much I take every little thing for granted. I wanted to send you my essay, I don't even care if you write back or not. I realize that it is not the best literary work every wrote, but when I read some of the personal essays that you had published on the site, they all gave me a sense that for the most part every author feels ignored. And maybe I have admittedly not been the most sympathetic of people, and maybe my consciousness of being thankful stems only from being extremely glad that I am NOT handicapped, but anyway, I just wanted to write to you, and to tell you that I did in fact notice you, and am more in awe of you and your life than you can ever possibly know. I wish you the best of luck in anything that you try. You're an inspiration.

Hi Yvonne

I've really enjoyed reading stuff on your website. I LOVE how thorough you are with your links and your information. I sure hope your point reaches some people--especially those ignorant who are not only unaware of the world of the "disabled" but who have no desire to be made aware.

Anyway...

I am mom to a 4 1/2 year old with Athetoid Cerebral Palsy. I feel like I'm drowning in a sea of blank! There are no resources out there on overcoming involuntary movement--or heck, even just about living with it! There are no resources out there about children with cerebral palsy--the early stages. There is nothing but a few wonderful websites like this, a film called King Gimp and a few fantastic writings that you can find IF YOU ARE LOOKING by geniuses like you.

I was hoping you would want to offer me insights on my son's behalf. He doesn't sit, crawl, walk, roll, stand....did I cover the physcials? He has very little trunk control. His arms are constantly moving. He does eat by mouth but only purees or small (VERY small pieces) and only with a lot of work on my part. I can sit here and name things he doesn't do for hours, I suppose. That's what most people want to know anyway.

BUT...I know I don't have to do that. I told you what I did so that you could get a picture of him to hopefully help me! While he doesn't do "all" these things, he DOES have a wonderful personality and is a smart little guy trapped in his body. My husband and I have always known and have been thankful that teachers, therapists, etc. do agree.

We are in the process of getting an augmentative communication device as well as transitioning to Kindergarten. The more I know before he starts "big boy" scool, the better!

I know it's absurd to ask this of you having never met you and knowing you haven't met my son, but I'm so hoping someone can help me know the things my Zachary is trying to tell me!

Please let me know if you'd be interested in corresponding with me. I could tell you all I can via email and pictures and if you felt like you could help me, maybe someday we could actually meet.

I thought about emailing you but didn't UNTIL I read "I Do Exist." I so saw my son in that article. I know he's really young now but when you wrote about overcoming your movements and the exhaustion you (MUST) felt from the physical demands of trying to do what everyone else takes for granted.... I just had to try.

In case no one else has, I'd like to pat you on the back for being so committed and strong. You are so someone to be admired for putting SO much effort into meeting your goals. I realize you probably get offended by comments like that because you are just living your life (as you should) for you, BUT I still think you deserve the recognition because most people are so oblivious and I KNOW the dedication it takes.

Well, if I am bothering you, please accept my apology. Thanks for sharing and God Bless.

Hi,

Names Robert, nearly 50 yrs old.

I really am impressed with you! Have you found work? I’ve tried to find work for others on the net but had no luck.

I often think if they would get onto the net as you have done they would have much better results. And have you?

I found you by switching from listening to Karaoke files on alt.binaries.karaoke and switched to see whats up on the post polio group. And there you were posting on that newsgroup.

I’ve a total disability; recently I’ve determined I must not have the dreaded post polio. Thought I had for a long time. I’ve visited the post polio board for years. From what I hear a lot of them are on ventilators and stuff these days but I’m not so unfortunate, I do have some shortness of breath while sleeping and many of the symptoms they described but not so bad as needing O2 or ventilator. I’m real lucky.

I have a neur- muscular problem. An abnormality. Doctors could not just quite pin point it. Think I’ve a bad depression too. I’m going to see mental health soon and see what’s up with that. I take St.John’s wart occasionally, supposed to boost the mood. One doctor thought I had what you have. I think. MS. The one where you could wake up one day and not have use of legs, or your arms one day. Or maybe I’m thinking Muscular Dystrophy , maybe that’s it. My memory is somewhat affected. I could search it on the net but I’m just rambling anyway. I really related to Dora on finding Nemo.

You take care. Robert

PS. Now I see your guest book page! Lots of response,. Way cool.. you go girl and ... are you single?”Robert” that’s not me.. When I’m on the net I will be kHz_Robert Well I’m glad you getting responces and I’m responding by e-mail because I wouldn’t have felt as free to ramble as I have done here. Oh the Zoberguy thing here is sort of a take on Zoro Sober+guy. Quite happy to have had enough.

On the one hand, I am delighted that you are fighting the good fight, on the other, disappointed that you still need to. I find it amazing that in an economy the size of the States, that you haven't found a niche, mainly it would appear due to the short-sightedness of others.

Dear Yvonne,

Let me introduce myself. My name is Janet. In 1987, I gave birth to Bryce. Due to prematurity and jaundice, Bryce developed severe cerebral palsy. Unable to find child care for him and having to work, I place him in an intermediate care facility for the mentally retarded near New Orleans, LA. It took us a year and 8 months to find a way to care for him at home but finally he was back with us where he belonged. He went on to make A's and B's in typical classes with a student specific aide and attend several ADAPT actions. Sadly, we lost him in 1999 due to respiratory arrest or possibly heart failure.

I continue to be haunted by the injustice of entitlements to nursing homes and waiting lists for community based care. I am now in graduate school in social work and preparing for research on people with disabilities and institutions. In my literature reviews, I am finding very little research, articles in scholarly journals, or books on people with disabilities and the nursing home bias. I have also tried literature searches using the terms "residential care" and "ICFMR".

In your studies, have you come across any articles that might be of interest to me? If you have something that it would be easier for you to "snail mail" to me you can send it to me at: --------. Thank you (in advance) for your help.

Yvonne,

Hello from Virginia!!! I am a special ed teacher who is hanging in the balance between continuing to work or take disability for mental disabilities. I really want to stay working, and got my first disability check the same month I started to work after almost a year of unemployment.

Working with special ed students is the joy of my life! I teach in rural Virginia even tho I was a city girl from PA. These students don't have as much "attitude" as city kids, and it is a joyful challenge to find out the best way for them to learn without having to spend all my time busting down the attitude walls. I have been using the Internet with special ed students (LD and EMR with the occasional physically disabled student) since the late 80's.

I have taught three students with Muscular Dystrophy. The first was the oldest brother about a decade ago, who died last December 1st, and the other two were his twin brothers. It was amazing to see how much better the twins are accepted in the high school, compared to Tremaine. Tremaine was assigned to the MR class, but the twins are in all regular classes. They will graduate in June.

For the rest of the year, I am teaching at the local Alternative School that serves seven rural counties to take the worst discipline problems out of the regular schools. Some of them are special ed, and the school had to have a special ed person on the staff. (A week before the fed's audited).

I've been on the Internet a long time and have many contacts around the world who are mostly a mix of special ed teachers and disabled persons. Several are visually impaired and use unique computer equipment. I work online with The Enabling Foundation, Dr. Robert Zenhausern provides the server and the leadership. Ann Parsons, who was born totally blind but earned a Master's in English Lit with hopes of teaching someday, is a long time friend. So is Patt Herring who is now legally blind but uses a large screen monitor instead of a speech reader, is a close friend. I had the joy of meeting Norm in Rochester at a tech conference in the 90's, who has been blind since an illness when he was 7. He had one of the earliest online college courses (Minority History), since he uses a speech reader on his computer instead of having to hire a reader to read the student work to him.

Well, it's time to shut up and listen. I hope to hear from you. Check out my web pages in my signature file, and check out The Enabling Support Foundation at http://www.enabling.org/.

Yvonne,

I've been reading your posts on the autism board. I am very impressed with what you have accomplished and your courage. I am the parent of a 20 year old young man with Aspergers and bi-polar disorder and the foster parent of 2 other very special needs children.

I want to put up a web site for caregivers (related and nonrelated) of special needs individuals which provides information, training, and support, but the time demands of caring for the above children makes it very difficult to follow through because I know nothing of web development.

My dream is to make sure that every special needs individual has the resources and opportunity to reach their highest and best possible potential.

I am wondering if you would be interested in working with me on such a project.

Sincerely,

Hello, Yvonne,

I must tell you how much I enjoyed your website. I arrived there by way of the article 'Depressive Affect Among Physically Disabled Men and Women' after doing a simple search entitled 'Paul Longmore Essay' which I reread from time to time for inspiration. You have done an excellent job at amassing and organizing resources for the disabled. I read the above mentioned article as well as your own personal story. I plan to come back often to explore your site and all the many links (maybe makes some new friends) you have worked so hard on. While my path is a little different from yours I can see were both travelers on the same road. My disability is from Rheumatoid Arthritis, I was diagnosed at age 5 and now I'm 37. My disability is considered an Invisible Disability, which presents some unique problems which I'm sure you are aware of just as your disability is unique to you. I just really want to thank you for all your hard work and congratulate you for achieving many of your goals, keep up the good work. Any e-mails or questions are welcomed.

Thank You,
