A Tongue Expresses Its Views

Only drinking the most scalding cup of coffee could compare with the searing burning sensation of the tongue after prolonged radiation by a dentist. At first glance in the mirror, the tongue seemed normal. But over the next weeks the horrors of a previous overexposure were compounded by many times. An extreme dryness was noticed after the prolonged x-rays. The tongue and throat sensed this.

A reddening of the tongue was followed by hemorrhaging, severe ulceration, and a continuous breaking apart of the tongue's tissues. The healing process took on a predictable cycle of forming false membranes (a radiologist's term). Repeatedly, this raised the victim's hopes only to observe his tissues slough off as the tongue broke into a renewed cycle of ulceration and disintegration. The effect was like that of a shell-shocked soldier... dazed, depressed and unable to act on his own behalf.

Speaking with a dermatologist about the cycle of healing, which appeared to be much like the defragmenter on your PC, the doctor agreed that the similarity was very close. Assume that all those fragmented little boxes on your PC screen are living cells. Each cycle of healing reestablishes a better order and bonding for the cells as does the defragmenting scan during its rearranging of data cells. Although the repeated breakdown of tissue is discouraging, the cycles become longer, diminish in severity as the body's defragmenter does its work.
