2008 Legislative Update
02/13/08

Two bills have immediately jumped to the top of the radar screen. Please inform your membership about HB 139 sponsored by Rep. Dan Zwonitzer and HB 149 sponsored by Rep. Sue Wallis. These two bills would reduce the size of state government by eliminating positions.

It’s time to make those calls and send emails to House members asking them to vote NO on HB 139 and HB 149.

"Stronger Together"

Since its establishment in 1962, WPEA/SEIU Local 1990 has offered personal and confidential service to its members in all matters affecting their employment. Your voice is heard in conjunction with hundreds of other public workers - YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

WPEA has drafted and continues to draft legislation beneficial to public workers. Our lobbying efforts have resulted in beneficial legislation and defeating negative legislation. We have successfully represented LCSD #1 members at School Board meetings and during contract negotiations.

WPEA has effective, respected and experienced staff lobbyists who provides statistical data and information to Legislators; is able to persuade them to vote for WPEA issues; testifies in committees; and tracks pertinent legislation through the legislative process. WPEA's lobbying effort is believed to be the most singularly powerful political force in Wyoming.

You Have the Right to be Heard

Choosing to work for the State of Wyoming or the Laramie County School District No.1 was a wise choice. You have entered the arena of public service and there are few jobs in the world that have more potential for personal and professional reward. You enjoy a host of great benefits, job security, and potential for advancement. Along with your associates, you rights, as defined in the Wyoming Personnel Rules or by statute are:

    • Reasonable working hours & Conditions

    • Compensation commensurate wit the job.

    • Future family care benefits such as health insurance

    • Retirement benefits

    • Vacation days, sick leave, etc.

The Wyoming State Government provides many opportunities due to the number of services it provides. It employs approximately 8,000 people and utilizes a great diversity of employee skills in its daily activities. The Laramie County School District No.1 employs approximately 2500 people and is equally diverse. Despite the authority and vast resources that the state government and the school district wield, neither is not always highly responsive to the needs of its employees. And, in any large organization workers may feel as though their opinions and ideas do not matter. Making your voice heard above the din of competing interests can prevent this feeling of being a small cog in a big wheel.

You have the right to be heard. The Wyoming Public Employees’ Association (WPEA) can help you. As a collection of public servants, the WPEA acts as the voice of the state’s workers. The WPEA is your voice to the Executive and Legislative branches of state government. When the needs of state employees must be addressed, the WPEA is on the front lines of the battle working for you.

Take Our Hand

Take our hand. Join the WPEA and we can be your voice. Lawmakers do not have the time to visit with all state employees and assess their needs. The WPEA can assure your Senators and Representatives hear you. The WPEA can make certain that your Governor hears you. The WPEA has the time and access. Join today.
