Hi Wendy, About Audiostation, you can do a selective recovery of the C:\Voyetra\As2 folder and it's contents by using the red Product Recovery CD-Rom, as follows (from my notes): A) Turn off the pc, insert the Recovery CD, and turn on the pc. You will get two messages, answer "yes" to both. B) Then you will be brought to a menu with four options, 1. Recover hard disk(with format) 2. Recover hard disk(without format) 3. Recover selected files 4. Exit to dos prompt Choose option 3 C) The next menu gives you three options(Recovery selected files menu) 1. Shared windows libraries 2. Aptiva programs(choosing this option restores the C:\ibmtools\*.* directory) 3. Specify a file or directory Choose option 3. D) Type in the pathname of the file or directory that you are trying to recover, in this case, C:\Voyetra\As2\*.* and press [enter] Having chosen the files to restore press [enter] You will be asked to verify that the chosen path is correct, press Y and [enter]. Then you will be asked do you want to view the file match before recovering the files, choose "N" and finally will be asked Do you want to recover the file matches now? Y/N Answer "yes" and when the files are recovered you will be prompted to remove the cd and reboot. ...Here is part of an email I got from someone who succeeded in restoring Audiostation after a clean install, also in my webpage notes on Voyetra Audiostation and Problems after installing Windows 98 (check my webpage for details): Subject: Re: HELP NEEDED: RE-INSTALL/RE-COVER AUDIOSTATION Date: Sun, 5 Dec 1999 19:48:04 -0000 From: "Jaap" To: Hi Alice, The first action I did was to restore C:\VOYETRA\AS2 from the recovery cd-rom with the selected files option. Secondly I checked if all necessary files were in place, especially vmp_mm.dll and vctl.dll. In my situation this was not the case so I had to extract them from the recovery cd-rom. If you do not want to edit the registry (I never have, and the information from Jaap is "at your own risk") you can try changing the associated CDplayer in Windows Explorer View/Options/File Types so that Audiostation is the associated program for AudioCD and CDA files, after you have Audiostation working: AudioCD Opens with CDPLAY Action: PLAY (default) Application used to perform action: C:\VOYETRA\AS2\cdplay.exe /c:cd [ screenshot at http://home.att.net/~wymette/files/Audiocd.jpg ] CDAfile Opens with CDPLAY Actions: OPEN (default) play Application used to perform action (on both Open and Play): C:\VOYETRA\AS2\cdplay.exe /c:cd [ screenshot at http://home.att.net/~wymette/files/Cdafile.jpg ] ============================================ Check my notes under http://home.att.net/~wymette/FileType.txt for more on editing File Type associations. The Graphics of the the Options file was especially helpful since I've never used that feature before. And you were right, I did feel a lot more comfortable going that route rather than going into the registry. This windows 98 upgrade has been quite an education and adventure, and, thanks to people like you, Ben, and of course our UAMB web master Don, a very positive and comforting experience. I noticed recently that Audiostation DOES NOT show up in the Aptiva Installer, Aptiva System Information software list, or in Add/Remove Programs. Neither do the included programs such as Midi Player, Wav Player, Midi Orchestrator, etc. I also looked on my Diagnostics and Utilities disk, p/n 02k2432 (IT2US0ZU shows as the Volume label) and I don't see them there either. I was wondering where the setup files are located, in case I ever needed to reinstall. My preload version is IT2US0X (from Aptiva System Information). Alice Topic: How do I reinstall Audiostation? I, too, could not find any reference to where the AudioStation files are backed up. They are on the Diagnostic CD for some models other than the 2140/2142 systems. That makes me think that the files may only be on the Recovery CD and there may be no means of reinstalling them short of a total reinstallation if your Recovery CD doesn't provide selective installation. I can't see a way of installing it off the blue CD. Can it be done? hpl Forum Regular posted 04-18-2000 08:20 PM Here is the 'kosher' way A. Method 1: Restoring AUDIOSTATION to an Aptiva Mxx/Axx system: 1. Download APTRSTOR.EXE to your hard drive 2. Insert a blank floppy in Drive A:\ and double-click on the file stored on your hard drive. 3. Leaving the floppy inserted, Click Start > Click Run > Type A:\GO.BAT > Click OK 4. Click Start > Point to Programs > Click the MS-DOS Prompt 5. Type CD\ and tap [ENTER] 6. Insert your Product Recovery CD 7. Type RESTORE VOYETRA\*.* and tap [ENTER] 8. Type RESTORE WINDOWS\AUDIOSTA.INI and tap [ENTER] 9. Type RESTORE WINDOWS\ORCH.INI and tap [ENTER] 10. Type RESTORE WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VCTL.DLL and tap [ENTER] 11. Type RESTORE WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMP_MM.DLL and tap [ENTER] 12. Type EXIT and tap [ENTER] 13. You will need to create a shortcut for the AUDIOSTA.EXE and put it on your desktop. 14. Reboot. Try to run the AUDIOSTA.EXE to see if it works. Note: I strongly recommend downloading and applying the update audiostation file (AUDSTUSE.EXE) from IBMPC file library. This update gives a much better audiostation interface and volume control. In addition, when I restore the preload audistation to a non-Aptiva PC, I noticed that some of the volume control buttons (right channel, midi) were muted and could not be adjusted. Eventhough, this does not seem to affect the functionality of the audiostation, the problem goes away when the update is applied. B. Method 2: Restoring AUDIOSTATION to any systems! For a non-Aptiva system, you cannot use the RESTORE.EXE file. You have to use winzip or pkunzip with the password magic. (You can also use this procedure for an Aptiva too!). To use winzip, open these zip files on the recovery CD and extract either the entire folder or individual files to the right place. Aptiva39.zip contains the Voyetra folder Aptiva42.zip contains the Windows folder Aptiva57.zip contains the Windows\system folder. The Pkunzip already exists on the Recovery CD. To use it, go to MSDOS windows, go to the CDROM directory, change to the Recovery\US directory and type PKUNZIP -D -Smagic *.ZIP VOYETRA\*.* C:\ PKUNZIP -D -Smagic *.ZIP WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VTCL.DLL C:\ PKUNZIP -D -Smagic *.ZIP WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMP_MM.DLL C:\ When done, reboot, apply the audiostation update, reboot. Enjoy audiostation on any systems! NOTE: For Aptiva Cxx/Sxx systems which come with the Diagnostic And Utilities CD, check the IBMBUILD\AUDIOSTAT folder. You can restore all the files needed for Audiostation from there or from the Recovery CD using the same above procedures . The Audiostat in these systems contains basically the same files as in Mxx/Cxx. It has two extra files, WINDAT.INI in the c:\windows and AUDIOCD.REG file in the Audiostat folder. Actually, you don’t really need to restore all the *.INI files such as AUDIOSTA.INI, ORCH.INI AND WINDAT.INI). They will be automatically created when you run the AUDIOSTA.EXE, ORCH.EXE AND WINDAT.EXE files. The AUDIOCD.REG file just helps to register Audiostation with The Registry, click on this file will merge it to your Registry! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uninstallation is there all along for newer Voyetra versions Sunday, 11-Jul-1999 09:18:50 216.192.96.28 writes: Older, preload versions on 2168, 2176, 2159 do not have the uninstallation option. If you can't find it, use Aptiva Restore program (Aptstore download from Don's site or IBMPC) http://members.aol.com/donnaskani/aptrstor.html and restore the following folder, files 1. The folder Voyetra from your Recovery CD 2. The files: audiosta.ini, orch.ini and windat.ini from the Recovery CD to the c:\windows folder 3. The files: vctl.dll and vmp_mm.dll to the c:\windows\system folder 4. Don't know whether you have the file audiocd.reg on your recovery CD or not. After you have restored the Voyetra foldler search for the file audiocd.reg If you can't find it, search for it in the D&U CD. If it can't be locate, just use a editor to create a text file called auidocd.reg containing these lines REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AudioCD\shell\play\command] @="c:\\voyetra\\audiosta.exe /c:cd %1" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\cdafile\shell\play\command] @="c:\\voyetra\\audiosta.exe /c:cd %1" Save it as audiocd.reg Once you are done: BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY. Then right click on this file and select merge to merge it to your registry. Test your Voyetra program. You may need to create a short cut for the various *.exe files in the Voyetra folder. Put them in a program folder named Voyetra in the Start menu. The only way to avoid the problem is to avoid using the AudioStation program. Once the association has been changed, you can use the following instructions to change it back: In Windows95, select Start, Programs, and Windows Explorer. Select View, then Options, and then File Types. Find the reference to WAVE SOUND and select it, and then the option to remove it. Now double-click on any WAV file (they will now have NEITHER the mike nor the speaker icon). Choose SOUND RECORDER (yellow speaker) from the OPEN WITH list. Make sure that "Always use..." is checked. This will restore the original defaults of OPEN (C:\Windows\Sndrec32.exe) and PLAY (C:\Windows\Sndrec32.exe /play /close) and they will appear as they did previously on the Right-Click menu (with the default being a PLAY that will play the sound). I think when I downloaded a version of Real Player the download deleted the sub file C:\VOYETRA\AS2\CDPLAYER.EXE so it will not auto play CD's when I load them into the CD/ROM drive. I'm going to try and reload that sub file using my product recovery CD. Do you think that will work ? Or maybe I should try to reload all of the Voyetra stuff ? I greatly appreciate your help !!! It was the part of the puzzle that solved the problem. Thanks again. Jesone Jesone, If C:\VOYETRA\AS2\CDPLAY.EXE is really missing, you can do a selective recovery using the red Product Recovery CD. Check http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/MNOK-3QYV6B.html or my notes at http://home.att.net/~wymette Another possibility is that the new Real Player version didn't delete any files but changed your file association for audio cd files. That's what obs is thinking, and you could try his method to reset the association to cdplay: "if you mean that another program is being used to autoplay your discs, trying this: hold down SHIFT and load an audio disc into the drive (this disables CD autoplay) ... go to windows explorer and browse to the audio disc... hold down SHIFT again and RIGHT CLICK on any audio track ... select OPEN WITH ... in the popup dialogue window that asks you which program you want to use to open this type of file, browse to voyetra's cdplayer.exe. be sure to also check 'always open with' in the same dialogue window." Only thing, you might have to first select the audio tract with the left mouse button to highlight it, before hitting Shift and right-clicking it to get the Open With option. Also, the program name is cdplay.exe, not cdplayer.exe. Here's another way to change the file association: On my 2140L5H, in FileTypes, AudioCD and CDAfile open with CDPLAY and the editing action box shows C:\VOYETRA\AS2\cdplay.exe /c:cd Note that there is a space between cdplay.exe and /c:cd. I have screenshots for both file types at http://home.att.net/~wymette/files/Cdafile.jpg and http://home.att.net/~wymette/files/Audiocd.jpg If you show a different program associated with audio CD files in File Types, you can highlight the filetype and use the EDIT button to edit the play and open actions to match mine. Make sure you set the default so that the appropriate action is in bold type: Play for audioCD and open for cdafile. ---------------------------- see also http://home.att.net/~wymette/programs/W98prob.txt for notes on reinstalling Audiostation
