You are, as usual, a wealth of knowledge. I did send a fax to a "known good" fax, successfully. I then did another unsuccessful one to my office. Then I took a suggestion from the RingCentral web site. "Try enabling/disabling ECM (Error Correction Mode) in the Advanced dialog of Fax Options." And was able to send a successful fax to my office. Hopefully, this will be the end of this little snafu. If not, I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling RingCentral and/or disabling the spooling. I have a single phone line, so I've entered the same phone number in the Setup Wizard for both 'home phone number' and 'fax number'. If you have a two-modem system, you would enter that information in the Setup Wizard. If you want, you can enter the Setup Wizard through the Ring Central Menu to check what you've entered. I'm not exactly sure what you are asking, but check your Ring Central Users Guide, Chapter 9, or open Ring Central and go to Menu/Ring Central Help, then click on Help Topics, Options and Answering Options. See if you find what you're looking for there. If you only have a single phone line (single modem), you would go to Menu/Options and click the Answering tab to set the answering option as a complete answering machine for voice, fax and data. I have never sent or received faxes, though. I'm going by what I've read. Here's what it says in the Ring Central Help file: ____________________________________________________________ When RingCentral is on, it receives faxes automatically. The Fax Operation screen is displayed when the incoming call is a fax call. You can also receive faxes manually when you are online. The Fax Operation screen is displayed when the incoming call is from a fax machine. CAUTION Incoming faxes may not exceed 100 pages. New faxes are stored in the New folder. Faxes you have viewed or saved are moved to the Old folder. If you are using RingCentral for e-mail and have Microsoft Fax installed as a service, Microsoft Fax is automatically launched with RingCentral. To ensure that your incoming fax calls are answered correctly, do one of the following: Remove Microsoft Fax from your Microsoft Exchange/Windows Messaging profile. Disable answering on Microsoft Fax. Set a different number of rings to answer (for example set RingCentral to answer after 2 rings, and Microsoft Fax to answer after 4 rings). To Receive Faxes Manually While you are online, click on the Main screen, and select Manual Fax Receive. _____________________________________________________________________ As long as you don't have Windows Messaging set up for Microsoft Fax AND Ring Central for email, then, I gather, you don't have to worry about disabling Microsoft Fax answering. Just leave Ring Central on if you are expecting a fax, or get the fax manually while you are online. Maybe someone here who has actually used Ring Central for faxes will jump in here and give us their advice. According to the Ring Central Help file, that's only necessary if you use Ring Central for E-mail , since that causes Microsoft Fax to be activated if it's set up in Windows Messaging. Ring Central is not an email program itself, but uses Windows Messaging. You can take a look through Ring Central Help by opening Ring Central, clicking on Menu, then Ring Central Help in the drop-down menu. I found this by going to the Ring Central website, http://www.rzs.com/rzscom/KB/quest-1.asp?FAQ=false and leaving the first field, catagory, set to ALL, and selecting version 4.10.xx(IBM) from the second field's drop-down list. Topic: Ring Central To Dell (IBM) (2 of 2) Conf: Aptiva 2140 and 2142 From: Del IBM Date: Wednesday, June 23, 1999 Here are four items to check that must be 'in place' in order for you to hear or be heard over Ring Central: - The cable that connects the modem card to the system board (it's a four-wire cable about a foot long) - Check this to ensure that it's fully seated at both ends. - The orange microphone plug must be plugged into the microphone jack at the back of the system at the bottom jack with the orange label next to it. - The purple plug must be plugged into the audio amplifier card at the back of the system. Ensure that this is fully seated - it can easily be partially unplugged to where it appears to be plugged in but not functional. - No input or output settings in the Windows Volume Control panel should be set on Mute or have the controls pushed down to the bottom. (You can get to this panel by double-clicking on the yellow speaker icon down on the system tray next to the digital clock.) NOTE: If you open up the Windows Volume Control panel and you do not see any control for the Microphone, use these steps to change what appears on the panel: - with the Volume Control panel open, click on Options at the upper left - click on Properties - click on "Recording" - down in the "Show the following volume controls:" window, ensure that the Mic box has a checkmark in it - click on Ok to save the change - now look at the Mic setting to be sure that it is not set on Mute, that the control is at least halfway up, and that the balance control is centered. Aside from those checks, the only other thing I can suggest is to uninstall Ring Central and reinstall it. (I'm assuming here that you're not using Windows 98): - click on Start > Aptiva Installer - click on the Show Installed Programs - click once on RingCentral to highlight it - click on the Uninstall button - follow the prompts. After RingCentral has been uninstalled: - place the Diagnostic CD in the drive - click on Start > Aptiva Installer - click on the Show Uninstalled Programs - click once on RingCentral to highlight it - click on the Install button - follow the prompts. If none of the above steps resolve the problem, I'd recommend contacting the IBM HelpCenter at 800-772-2227. Thank you for using IBM Online HelpCenter! We have all re-installed Ring Central at least once. My brother has recovered his entire hard drive once (which fixed the problem for a little while.) The symptom is that Ring Central will answer the call, show that it is receiving a FAX, and then disconnect without receiving anything. Update Connector shows that we are all current, but I note in another message information about upgrading from version 4.10.78. I am still running Win95 but the others are running Win98. Topic: Ring Central FAX (2 of 2) Conf: Aptiva 2140 and 2142 From: Del IBM Date: Tuesday, July 06, 1999 Betty, I would recommend trying the updated versions of Ring Central if you can find the source for the downloadable files. I strongly suggest this in any case for those systems that are now using Windows 98 since the original shipped version of Ring Central is not compatible with Windows 98. I cannot officially recommend installing the upgraded versions of Ring Central (available over in the "Notebook & PDA" area for downloadable files) since they are only approved for installation on Thinkpads and not Aptivas. However, from the feedback I've seen in the Aptiva forums, these updates work. In the meantime I downloaded an evaluation copy of a program that allows you to fax. Basically you just type or open a document and print it to the program's printer which launches the application, allowing you to attach a cover page. If you're interested, I can provide you with more information. Also, don't forget about Microsoft Fax which works very well. A) If you are using RingCentral for e-mail, it might take longer for RingCentral to start because it is processing your e-mail. Q) Why isn't RingCentral answering calls? A) Make sure that: * Answer button on the Main screen is on. If it is off, click Answer to turn on the light. * If you have other telephone devices or answering machines connected to the same phone line as RingCentral, turn off the Auto Answer function on the those telephones. * Your data terminal application is closed. If a data terminal is open, the active application (the one which is in the foreground) will answer the call. * You are not trying to open a fax while the call is coming in. RingCentral cannot answer incoming calls until it is completely done opening the fax. Q) I selected RingCentral Fax as my default printer, but my print jobs are not sent as RingCentral faxes. A) RingCentral Fax will be set as the default printer only after the first time you launch RingCentral. Q) Why is the telephone is still ringing after I pick it up? A) If you have an MWave board, it might take your system longer to process an incoming call. Q) Why can't callers hear me while a message is playing online? A) This is a MWave board limitation. MWave turns off the microphone when a message is played online. Q) I subscribe to Caller ID from my telephone company, but RingCentral does not recognize callers or play Distinctive Prompts or Private Greetings. A) Make sure that RingCentral is set to answer after three or more rings (this option is set on the Answering tab of the Options dialog). Q) When I use RingCentral for e-mail, I cannot receive faxes. A) By default, when you install Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Fax installs as a service. When you launch RingCentral, it automatically starts Microsoft Fax. To ensure that your incoming fax calls are answered correctly, do one of the following: * Remove Microsoft Fax from your Microsoft Exchange profile. * Disable answering on either RingCentral or Microsoft Fax. * Set a different number of rings to answer for RingCentral and Microsoft Fax. Q) Why can't I adjust speaker volume using Windows 95 Volume Control Balance? A) The Windows 95 Volume Control balance has no effect on RingCentral. To adjust speaker volume, move the Vol button on the far right edge of the Main screen. Q) Why does RingCentral take a long time to disconnect after receiving a fax? A) If RingCentral is set to Answer as Fax Only, the modem might take up to 1 minute to disconnect.
