AW ------------------------------------ > Forum: alt.sys.pc-clone.compaq Subject: Re: Standby/Sleep Question Date: 05/27/2000 Author: KCGreek You didn't indicate whether you'r running Win95 or Win98. Here's the method for restoring 'Suspend' to the Start Menu in each: For Win95: To get the Suspend to appear on the Start Menu, Click Start/Settings/Control Panel. Then click on the Power Icon, then in Power Properties click on the Advanced button in the Power Tab. Check the switch for the Show Suspend command on Start menu. click OK. For Win98: Run the Add New Hardware from Control Panel. Windows will first search for PNP devices, then for other devices. When completed, Windows should have found Advanced Power Management support. Click OK and the Sleep/Suspend option should be back on your Start Menu. Hope that helps.... >--- KCGreek On Fri, 26 May 2000 11:57:11 -0400, "acimsoul1" wrote: >I have a Presario 1685. Is there a suspend or standby mode? Do others use it? How do I enable that particular button? G. Weidenaar 2140 L71 64 ram otherwise factory. Topic: Moon button on Keyboard (2 of 14) Conf: Aptiva 2140 and 2142 From: Alice Wyman Date: Thursday, July 15, 1999 05:39 PM The "Moon" button is to suspend your pc. It does the same thing as clicking on Start/Suspend. What happens when you press the "Moon" button or go to Start/Suspend? If you get a message that the pc cannot be suspended, then check under Start/Programs/Access Aptiva/Control/Suspend Utility and make sure that the "Minutes of inactivity" is not set to "off". I have mine set at 90 minutes. If that doesn't resolve the issue, you may have to reinstall EZButtons. Here's a copy of Del Franklin's recent post on the subject: ------------------------------------------------- Topic: STAND BY BUTTON (1 of 3) Conf: Aptiva 2140 and 2142 From: Del IBM Date: Tuesday, June 15, 1999 12:10 PM Seeing as how you've confirmed that there's no physical problem with the LED indicator under the Suspend button, that leaves only the EZ Button device driver in question (that's what enables the Suspend button function from the keyboard.) What I'd recommend is to uninstall the EZ Button program and then reinstall it. Before you do this, make a note of which EZ Buttons you may have customized since your customized settings will be lost when you uninstall EZ Buttons. - Place the Diagnostics & Utilities CD in the drive - click on Start / Aptiva Installer - click on the "Show Installed Programs" tab - click on the Aptiva EZ Buttons icon to highlight it and then click on the Uninstall button - follow any prompts Once this is done: - click on Start / Aptiva Installer - click on the "Show Uninstalled Programs" tab - click on the EZ Buttons icon and then on the Install button - follow the prompts. Once EZ Buttons has been reinstalled, try the Suspend button and see if the light functions as it should. Customize any of the EZ Buttons you may have had set up before. Let me know if that fixed the problem. Thank you for using IBM Online HelpCenter! To elaborate, I have no suspend option from the start menu. My moon button has no LED light lit. When I press it, the word suspend appears superimposed in the lower right corner of the screen for a second or two, and nothing happens. BTW - I do have the four ezbuttons calling various programs of my choosing. I haven't tried reinstalling EZbuttons yet, but I did try your first suggestion - my time is set to 60 minutes, though I don't think it's really doing that. My hard drive spins down and my monitor goes into sleep mode, but I theorize that those things are not being controlled by other things?! From what I've just said, should I still reinstall EZbuttons? Gary Weidenaar Topic: Moon button on Keyboard (4 of 14) Conf: Aptiva 2140 and 2142 From: John EH IBM Date: Sunday, July 18, 1999 08:27 PM Gary, I would recommend reinstalling the EZ button drivers. Where exactly on the start menu should it be? (on shutdown menu, in a folder, etc) Perhaps I need to do as John said, reinstall ez buttons? Topic: Moon button on Keyboard (10 of 14) Conf: Aptiva 2140 and 2142 From: Alice Wyman Date: Wednesday, July 21, 1999 09:55 PM I don't have much experience using the Setup Utility. I found the following information in Access Aptiva/Discover and help. You could go into the Setup Utility to just look at your settings, but you might want to wait for an IBM tech to give you the go-ahead before making any changes. Alice ------------- The Setup Utility lets you view or change some of your computer's configuration settings. You might need to use the Setup Utility if you upgrade hardware or receive an error message. However, you should go to the Setup Utility only as a last resort. You should proceed with caution when changing Setup Utility settings. If you make an error in a Setup Utility setting, your computer may not run properly. (snip) Of course, you can always use the Setup Utility just to view hardware and configuration settings. In general, you can view information or settings for: The processor Memory Drives Ports Audio controllers Power management System resource assignments Startup options Model information Date and time Security options Some of the Setup Utility options are strictly informational, but others let you control how your computer operates. For example, you can use the Setup Utility to: Create or change a power-on password Reduce energy consumption Enable or disable message display during the power-on self test (POST). Enable or disable the virus detection provided with your BIOS (See note.) To start the Setup Utility 1. Turn off your PC. 2. Restart your computer. 3. Press the F1 key when the IBM Aptiva logo appears during the startup process. The Setup Utility menu will appear. The Setup Utility Power Management menu contains options for saving energy when the computer is on, but not being used. Enabling the APM Connection Set the APM Connection option to "Enabled" to take advantage of the power management features. When enabled, the APM connection establishes communication between your computer's BIOS and the operating system advanced power management (APM) driver. Enabling devices to check for activity You can specify the devices that will determine whether or not you are using the computer, such as the keyboard, mouse, disk drives, and ports. To select a device, change the setting to "Enabled." The system monitors enabled devices for activity. If no activity is detected for a specified length of time, the computer enters the Suspend state to conserve power. When activity is resumed, the computer returns to the active state. Setting the Suspend Timer At the Suspend Timer option, you can select the number of minutes of inactivity that must pass before your computer enters a low-power state. If the computer does not detect activity from the enabled devices after the time specified, the Suspend feature will automatically start. Simply choose one of the available selections to set the Suspend Timer. For specific information about power management settings, see the Help provided in the Setup Utility. Notes: You must shut down and restart your computer before you start the Setup Utility. If you need to refer to the information on this page, print this help topic before shutting down your computer. To print the topic, click the Print button located near the top of this window. You should proceed with caution when changing Setup Utility settings. An error in a Setup Utility setting could prevent your computer from running properly. Janice Not with IBM Topic: screen savers (3 of 5) Conf: Aptiva 2140 and 2142 From: Alice Wyman Date: Tuesday, July 20, 1999 03:50 PM Here's something else you can check. Right-click an empty spot on the desktop and select Properties. On the screensaver tab, look where it says "WAIT___minutes". This specifies the minutes of inactivity before the screensaver kicks in. Compare this to your setting in the Suspend Utility, minutes of inactivity (Start/programs/Acess Aptiva/Control/Suspend Utility). The "wait" time for the screensaver should normally be less than the minutes of inactivity for the Suspend utility. If it's not, then your system will go into suspense before the screensaver has a chance to kick in. Personally, I'm using a wait time of 10 minutes for the screensaver and 90 minutes for Suspend. I don't have the energy-saving features of the monitor selected at all.
