Then I reinstalled (after a defrag, scandisk, reboot) the stand alone RP G2. Problem 1.: I no longer have autorun on the CD-ROM drive. I tried turning it off-reboot, turning it back on-reboot. Problem 2.: When I put in a CD to play, got this dialog box: "Windows cannot find PROGRAM.exe. This program is needed for opening files of type 'Audio CD'. I went to my file associations (File Types) and I had 10 entries for RJB, including AudioCD and CDAudio. I associated AudioCD with CDplayer.exe, because I'm not sure where the Atapi files would be. I don't believe that is the correct file association though. I'm also not sure it would be safe to delete those 10 RJB file types either, as it might mess up some other shared program. What a mess!!! Here's a (sometimes even easier) way: Click once on any *.WAV file to highlight/select it Press and hold the [SHIFT] button while you Right-Click on the file Click Open With Choose SNDREC32 from the list and make sure "Always use..." is checked The only issue particular to *.WAV files is that this may or may not reset the default action to be Play rather than Open as most of us prefer. If you Double- Click on a *.WAV after restoring the association to Sound Recorder and you find you have to Click the Play [>] button rather than having it play automatically and you wish to change that do this: Windows Explorer > View > Options > File Types > Click on Wave Sound (or WAV File) > Click Edit If under Actions you see both Play and Open but Open is in bold text Click on Play and Click the Set Default button If under Actions you only see Open, Click the New button Under "Action" type Play Under "Application to perform action" type c:\windows\sndrec32.exe /play /close Make sure you have spaces before the /'s (c:\windows\sndrec32.exe_/play_/close) Click on your New "Play" action and Click the Set Default button. This opens the "old" (Win 3.1) File Manager. From there, find a file of the type you wish to change, click on it (once) to highlight it, and then go to File/Associate. This will bring up a box indicating what the present association is and give you a drop-down list of other apps. Just choose the one you want and it will change the association for you. I find this much easier than going the Control Panel/System/.... route. randog wrote: > I am very dissapointed with Corels lack of response either in the newsgroups > or on the phone(tech support) or on the internet. > > I too an experiencing the problem of Print & Photo House taking over jpegs > and .bmp formats...including the .bmps that I use as background on my > computer. It looks like your .jpg files are still associated with Paint Shop Pro, so the system goes looking for it when you double-click such files, then can't find it. You will need to associate them with something else. One way to do that would be to left-click once on a downloaded .jpg file, then while holding down the Shift key, right-click on the same file. In with the other options in the menu that comes up should be one saying "Open With." When you choose Open With, a window will come up with a list of your installed programs. You need to click on one that can open .jpg files, such as Netcape or Internet Explorer. The first time you try this, make sure the little box at the bottom of the window that says "Always use this program to open this file" is UNCHECKED before you click OK. If you like the results when the program opens your jpeg, then you can go back and do the same procedure again, this time making sure the "Always use" box IS checked. From then on, double-clicking a downloaded .jpg file should open that program with the image loaded. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How to select a new Viewer (player) to open a file Behappy wrote in message ... I'm having trouble viewing JPEG files in My Computer or Windows Explorer in Win98. At one time I could view them and preview them and then something happened (I don't know what since it had been a while since I used it). I cna view and preview GIF files - it uses Microsoft Photo Editor. The path with the GIF files is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd\PhotoEd.exe "%1" When I go to the view /folder options and try to set up Jpg files to use this it tells me that that the specified file could not be found. I have to remove the "%1" and even then it just opens the program and doesn't open the picture. It works fine with GIF files. Also I can open GIF files from the Internet Explorer File/ Open etc menu and it opens the GIF files in IE, but once again it tries to open JPEG images in Photo Editor and is unsuccessful. I really need to open and especially be able to preview JPEG files in My Computer or Windows Explorer. Any ideas out there? Deborah J-L wrote in message ... Are you having problems with .jpeg files...or .jpg files...or both? Try this: highlight a .jpg...hold down the shift key and right-click on it at the same time...release...choose 'open with'...scroll down to whatever viewer you wish to have open it (like MS Photo Editor)...put a check in the bottom box...click OK. This will associate all .jpg files to open with that viewer. You can always change this by going through the steps again and choosing a different viewer. You also need to do the same thing with .jpeg files. Does this correct the problem? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Jeff Richards Date: 1998/11/05 Forums: microsoft.public.win95.general.discussion The list you get in the 'Open With' window and the list of file types under View/Options/File Types in an Explorer window are the same list. The Almanac should have added one or perhaps two entries into this list. If its icon has appeared against other entries in this list then this does not necessarily mean that it has taken over the association for that file type, but it may mean that there is some corruption in the registry or some file naming conflict. However, if you commonly use the Open With window to start applications then it can happen that the Almanac application becomes the default application for a file type if the "Always use this program to open files of this type" box is checked when you make the selection. Do View/Options/File types, highlight an entry that appears to have the wrong icon, and choose Edit. Then choose Change Icon and see what file is listed as containing icons suitable for the file type. The current one will be highlighted. This should give you a clue as to why this application's icon appears to have become associated with the wrong file type. Post back with a specific example of a file type that appears to have the wrong icon, and what filename you saw in the Change Icon window. If you suspect that the almanac program has become the default association for a file type, then highlight the bolded action (usually 'open' ), choose Edit and check the "Application used to perform action' box. Post back with the details. Unless there is some corruption in your system, the incorrect icons for the different file types are not related to your problem of sometimes not being able to find the EXE file associated with a filetype. That problem will need separate analysis. kfred wrote in message <363F8A49.85CF1C15@frontiernet.net>... >Had this problem before when I installed this app, so removed it, and >now reinstalled it. If you move or rename registered files, the Registry will usually adjust for the change, so you achieve nothing. e.g. if you wanted to replace c:\windows\notepad.exe with another file of the same name, the mistake is to rename notepad.exe to whatever.exe as the files that were associated with notepad.exe will now be associated with whatever.exe (same applies to move) In this example, the correct thing to do is copy notepad.exe (if you wanted to save it) and then copy the new notepad.exe over the top of the old one. ...Alan In microsoft.public.win95.general.discussion, Sheldon and Alice Wyman wrote: >Cate, I saw that suggestion in this thread, but I couldn't figure out >why it was important to first copy, then delete the original folder (why >not just move?). I remember sending you a newsgroup message where a guy said it was the easiest way, which I still have on file somewhere. I used it when I tried removing Netscape Hypertext Document and recreating it from scratch. What I did was use the regular Open With technique on an .htm document and browse to Communicator's netscape.exe. This just set up the one extension, though, so I used File Manager to add .html and .xbm to that type. There's a box where you can type in an extension then highlight the existing filetype you want to add it to. It wouldn't let me add .shtml, though, so I guess it's limited to 4 letters. > There's the select. shift/r-click and open with method, but I think that > only lists the programs already associated with a file type. I did that with the hypertext document and also when I tried changing the association for .bmp back from Corel Photohouse to MS Paint. As I recall, when I did that the files would open Paint when I double-clicked them, but I couldn't get the icon to change back, so I reset .bmp's to Photohouse again so the icon wouldn't be misleading. > I also remember reading that you can go into View/Options/FileTypes, > click on a file type, click edit, then edit again, then when the path > to the program comes up, you just browse to the new one. Yep - I did that when 16-bit Quicktime took over associations from 32-bit Quicktime. I don't think I even had to browse; I just retyped the line to point to the preferred executable. That was my only adventure with manually changing associations that actually worked! > I've looked at that, but noticed that, after the .exe, there are > things like /C:mid and /play /close, which I don't understand about. > Then there's always the option of reinstalling the program (except for > Audiostation, which for me is not an option).
