WUHS Class of 1949's Guest Book

Classmates,

The Guest Book posting on this page are from August 1999 thru July 2000.  The more recent post can be viewed by clicking on the “View Guest Book” button.

I think this is the best way to manage the post because we were running out of space on the “Guest Book”

Marilyn (Votaw) Dickey has been moved to the Mountainside Guest Home in Hacienda Heights. In a few days she will be leaving there and staying in New Hampshire with her daughter, Karen. When she returns she hopes to go back to the Park Regency Integrated Health Services in La Habra. A side note to Gerry Cassem who asked to be kept informed about Marilyn. Sorry, I can't find your e-mail address... Please send it again.

Thanks Sue for posting about Marilyn. We were gone for a month so I found out about a week ago at church. I am going to see her next week. Her sister Joanne said she really would appreciate company. I just sent notes to the reunion committee as I have a new email and I also told them about Marilyn. Please note: gnerice@ix.netcom.com
We all appreciate the work Carl has done with the web site. We wish more people would post. Gloria

About Marilyn Votaw Dickey -- Marilyn has been moved to a rehab facility and is making good progress. She is quite coherent now and speaks clearly though slowly. Unfortunately, she has lost most of her sight but she still has that beautiful smile and her sense of humor. They are working with her on balance, strength and walking. I'm sure she would appreciate a note or card from anyone who has time. Her new address is: Park Regency Integrated Health Services Rm.#115A 1770 W. La Habra Blvd. La Habra, CA 90631 Phone (562)691-8810 ex. 316. She is kept pretty busy during the day but 6-8 pm is a good time for a visit or call. Time hangs heavy and she'll be there quite awhile.

Marilyn Votaw Dickey is in ICU at Whittier Presbyterian Hosp. She was discovered unconscious on the floor of her home having suffered a cluster of small strokes sometime between Sat. evening and when she was found mid-day on Sunday. She had also been having radiation treatments for lymphoma and was taking Prednisone. She can speak and move her limbs but she cannot yet have visitors, phone calls or flowers. Her daughter, Karen, has requested prayers for healing and strength for Marilyn.

Hi Jim,
The e-mail attached below started the idea of the class photos. Don Jenkins made the photos for the reunion badges so I borrowed some of his information to make the JPEG images for the Web page. Thanks for looking at the page. Carl
“Hi Carl:
I think you're doing a fine job with the 49er web page. I visit it regularly and look forward to new additions.

In talking to a couple of alumni, I surmise that many have lost their 1949 yearbook as I have. I wonder if it would be possible to scan the pages of graduate photos from the year book into the website. This would certainly make a great addition.
Keep up the good work,
Larry Taylor”

All you '49ers out there, write and tell us what you have been doing, where you are going, we would like to hear from you. If anyone did not get their booklet, I need to hear that too. Gloria

Dear Barbara & Wayne,

Thanks for posting to the WUHS Guest Book. Do you think the columns from the C&W are interesting? Your article on Jackie Robinson was a perfect prediction of what happened to that great ball player. Gloria Madran Rice loaned me the four copies of the C&W she has, three are from 1945 and one from 1947. I would like to borrow more copies if I can find them.

Using Microsoft Front Page 2000 software to post to the Internet makes it easy to post and change the pages. The problem is finding something interesting to post!! If you have any ideas please let me know.

Yep!! plans are "in the works", whatever that means. So! here we go again. All you 49ers start rounding up "peeps" from our class. The "bash" will be held in 200--something. (I ran out of fingers). Carl's doing such a GREAT job with this web that I've decided to close the WUHS News for now. Let me know if ya'll want it started again. Hope this finds everyone bright eyed & bushy tailed. It's me again, finally got better info. Booklet company sends books to "mailing company" who in turn gets them ready for bulk mailing. They were taken on Friday, Feb. 19, which I thought meant the post office. Monday was a holiday so if the mailing company worked on Tuesday, got them to the post office on Wed., and bulk mail usually takes 4 to 5 days locally, it will be sometime this week. I tried to pin him down more, trying to keep my cool, I asked if he thought he should check with the mailing service and he said "no, it usually takes them a week or more. I suggested they do their own mailing, a permit does not cost that much and they would have more control. He stated they were planning on it this year. (I think they are getting other complaints, not just me.) Sorry for the long post. Gloria

Hi everyone, guess what, I goofed, I am the only one who received photo booklets, I wondered why no one wrote, so I called several people on Sat. and no one had received their booklet. I am so MAD, all this talk about it being in the mail, I think they hurried and sent me mine to shut me up. I have been calling several times a week. If people from other reunions are reading this, DON'T USE PRIDE REUNION! We had to pay all the costs right at the beginning, over $2000. Everytime I called they said "later", then "soon", finally "in the mail" We still have not received them. Can you tell that I am upset? Several people are going to call them on Monday, maybe that will help. Gloria

At long last, our booklets are "in the mail". I have been calling them twice a week to see why we were not getting them, all I got was "soon". If you came to the reunion or mailed money for a book and do not receive it by the end of this week, email me or write, 12333 Honolulu Terrace, Whittier CA 90601, and I will see that you get one. We are also talking about having a "potluck picnic" in the summer, probaly on a Saturday or Sunday and inviting everyone within about a 2-hour driving distance. Classmates keep saying that they did not have enough time to visit. Write and tell us what you think of this idea??? Gloria Madran Rice

Hi Everyone,
I called the reunion booklet again, they assure me that they are supposed to receive the booklets from the photo shop "next week" whatever that means. Of course, then they have to put on the labels and mail them. I just keep thinking of how long they have had our money, I know they have been in the area a long time and have a good reputation. I am going to call every week, if we don'g get a better answer, I will go to their office. Gloria

Hi everyone, I just checked with Pride Reunions, they originally told me booklets would be mailed in middle of January. I just called and they said it was at the printer with a lot of others, seems everyone had their reunion in October and November, and it takes longer to process everything over the holidays. (Translation: no one works)They assured me it would be ready in a short time, whatever that means. The end of October, I personally took all the proofs to their office, sat while they made sure we had everything that was on the list, so it would go to the printer right away, they said we would have them in less than 3 months. I will check again the end of Jan. if we have not received them. Maybe if I make some noise we will get them sooner. Gloria

I will get a letter in the mail to him. No flack from me (as long as the address is correct). Apparently this bulletin board has lost it's charm. "Now that we have done our duty and said hello - don't bother me any more."

Apparently, our class of '49 is not among the "wired". But then, I'm having trouble getting responses from many people I've worked with much more recently.

Carl Arnold is the one doing all the special things for our Web Site. I am sure we are the only class to have our very own site. I just heard from the photo company that the proofs are all in and corrections made and our photo booklet should be mailed about the second week in January. Everyone who attended the reunion will receive a booklet. I ordered a few extra copies. If you know anyone who did not attend the reunion or order a booklet, they can still send $18.00 to Andy Anderson and request one. Merry Christmas and Happy Y2K to you.

I'm trying to have a 49'er News ready for Dec but may not happen 'cause the month of Nov is disappearing rapidly. I'll keep trying tho. (starting 3 new MO businesses is taking up a lot of time)
I noticed & it has been mentioned to me that there wasn't time enough to see everyone. How about we start at noon the next time? Maybe make it a three day affair, or start Friday evening? How about having everyone stand up and introduce themselves? That would probably work if we did start at noon. HEY! keep in mind there were over 220 people there & that's because we're the 49'ers, the best. Right? It's kinda' hard rounding up that many "old" people & I'm proud to be a part. Let's hear from you. "Talk" to any of the committee members. We want feedback (make your suggestions constructive - Please)

To Larry Taylor, Good suggestion to have printed lists of everyone that attended, several people asked for them, that is something we will do for the next reunion. When you get your reunion booklet, it will have names and addresses of eveyone and you can write or email, but it is not the same as seeing and talking to that person.
To Delores Weaver, Happy to hear about you. We want people to write something about themselves so we can keep in touch.
To Shirley King Norton, Carl Arnold had a good suggestion, send him a picture and he will post it on our Website. Also, write something about yourself.
To everyone who is only reading, not writing, sign the guest book and tell us something about yourself.

This was my first reunion and a really good/weird experience
seeing the old faces, different now, but when you started
talking to people you could see the person you knew 50
years ago emerging. My big regret is that I didn't go
around to all the tables and look at badges because when I
saw the list of attendees later on the web site, names
jumped out of people that I should have seen. It would
have been good to give each person a list of those
attending as a part of the registration packet.

October 23 was a night to remember. Getting together with former students of Lydia Jackson Elementary School was a kick. Norman Brown even remembered that his birthday and mine were the same date. Senior moment, I had not remembered. The decorations, fellow students and all, made for a perfect evening. Is our next reunion going to be in five years???????

Thank you to all the committee, everyone worked so hard, we never would have been able to do it without you. Thank you to everyone who attended, I hope we have the stamina to do it again in 5 years. Thank you to Joan Craven, who wrote the wonderful article that is posted here on the web. I hope that everyone will write, we really do enjoy hearing from you. We are going to try publishing a newsletter several times a year, so send us news from where you are and what you are doing. Gloria

Thanks all the 49'ers that came to the reunion, and those that wanted to but couldn't make it.
Perhaps the 55th. There were a lot of anxious moments during the reunions infancy, but you 49'ers came through.
I'm very proud to be a 49'er and to have the privledge of knowing you.
Now don't sit back on your ?????? 'cause 55's comin' up
and we want all of you to be here.
I plan on being here. (Don has to have someone to "pick on").
I don't want to dwell, but who ever thought we could "round up" over 200 people. (at our age).
55 comin' up. Start savin' your pennies & we'll see ya' here.
OK. Nuff for now. Have a great life and be sure to stay in touch.

Hello to everyone! Wasn't it just great?! Gosh, it was my very first reunion. I really did enjoy the Lydia Jackson reunion too; it was just so wonderful, seeing all of you again, and the pictures! Does anyone know if and where I can get a copy of those great pics of first thru fifth grades at Lydia Jackson? Please let me know if you do.
Love to all of you who put so much time and energy into this wonderfully warm reunion party!
xxx Carol

Greetings to the class of '49. Jeanne and I are looking forward to the reuion. It will be a great time. Allthough Jeanne and I graduated together we did not go together until 1953, after my tour of duty in the Navy. Art Cheverton and Jeanne are cousins which is the connection to how we got together. Jeanne taught school for many years and I worked for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, spacecraft integration test and launch operations. We have two children, Steve and Diana, and five left handed grandaughters, ages 10 to 17. Time flies! That's a very brief history and we are looking forward to sharing more at the reunion.

Welcome Donald Watkins, happy to hear you are coming to the reunion. The only person that is coming for sure in the group you asked about is Ray Barnds, did you scroll back to the early messages, somewhere in July, he wrote something about himself. Have you kept in touch with any classmates, we are still looking for many people?

You did great Carol, glad you signed on.
Nancy, It is beautiful in San Marcos, do you have horses? I know several people who have horses there. I am looking forward to seeing you.
Doris, Don't be afraid. You can't really hurt the computer. I have gotten in trouble too, but have taken a couple of classes, that helped. I am another one, who just moved away for short periods and then moved back. We live less than a mile from Whittier High.

This is my third attempt to sign into the Guest Book. Don't know what I'm not doing, but my messages don't appear so I guess I'm not entering them properly. I'm still new at this game. . .
This will be my first 49er reunion! But it is also the first time I've lived close enough to get to one easily. I'm sure looking forward to it, but wonder if I'll recognize anyone??? (Or if they'll recognize me!)

Hello everyone, we are looking forward to seeing you. I finally got brave enough to get into the internet. When we first used our computer I got myself into trouble using the internet and it took four phone calls to get me out, so I have been gun shy ever since. Jack uses it all the time but I stick just to the e-mail. Can't believe the progress that has been made in communications since 1949.
Barclay, It looks like you couldn't leave California even by moving across the U.S. You are a little North and East of us but not too far. Bet you can't find Hood, Va. on your map (Wolftown is close).
Thanks to all of you on the committee for making our get together possible. You're doing a great job.
