California State Railroad Museum - The premier railroad museum in California and one of the finest in the world. Located in Old Sacramento.

Golden Gate Railroad Museum - Located in San Francisco at the Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard.

San Diego Railroad Museum - Operated by the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association at Campo.

Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad and Transportation Museum - Located at the Northern Queen Inn at Nevada City.

Feather River Rail Society - Operating museum at Portola.

Orange Empire Railway Museum - Located at Perris.

Laws Railroad Museum - Located at Bishop.

Niles Canyon Railway - Operated by the Pacific Locomotive Association in Niles Canyon.

Lomita Railroad Museum - Located in Lomita.

Travel Town - Owned by the City of Los Angeles and located in Griffith Park, the collection of railroad equipment is being restored by two different volunteer organizations, American Southwestern Railway Association and the Southern California Scenic Railway Association.

American Southwestern Railway Association - This group is working to restore several passenger cars at Travel Town in Los Angeles at Griffith Park.

Southern California Scenic Railway Association - Restoration work is being carried out on a Santa Fe Gasoline Railcar and other equipment at Travel Town in Los Angeles at Griffith Park.

South Coast Railroad Museum - Located at the historic Goleta Depot.

Niles Depot Historical Foundation - Preserved Southern Pacific Depot in Niles.

Pacific Railroad Society -  The society has a museum at San Dimas and also several passenger cars.

Western Railway Museum - Operated by the Bay Area Electric Railroad Association at Rio Vista Junction.

San Francisco Cable Car Museum - Located in San Francisco on Mason Street.

California Trolley and Railroad Corporation - This group is involved with trolleys and is also developing a railroad museum in San Jose.

Centerville Depot - Preserved depot in Centerville.

Society for the Preservation of Carter Railroad Resources - This group is restoring railroad equipment built by Carter Brothers at the Ardenwood Historic Farm in Fremont.

Pacific Coast Chapter, Railway and Locomotive Historical Society - Besides the equipment at Sacramento this group has activities in Folsom.

San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society - This group is involved with the restoration of Santa Fe 4-8-4 #3751.

Roots of Motive Power - Located in Willits, this group has various pieces of logging railroad equipment.

Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum - Although mostly lumber related there are a couple pieces of small railroad equipment.

Sacramento Valley Historical - Railroad preservation activities in Woodland.
