INTRODUCTION
"By the Sea"

By Gigi Krop

I stand upon the beach gazing at the the edge of earth, the ocean horizon.  The ocean an intact body of water rolls along, the waves crash upon the beach. I am bewitched by the energy that brings the atoms of oxygen and hydrogen together to create the water of the seas; this is one of the great miracles of this world.

I think about time and space; how they work together like man and woman to create another dimension, another life. And then for a moment; for a second, I travel beyond the present time for a short glimpse of reality beyond time and space beyond man and woman where today, tomorrow and yesterday have no meaning.  There is only “now”, only “is” only “be”. Then the moment passes.

I stand in front of the ocean like a conductor in front of his orchestra and carefully listen to the symphony before me. The sound of a single wave as it first hits the shore and the subsequent swoosh as it washes up upon the beach. The icy spray of salt water burns my cool skin. I listen to the rhythm of many waves, breaking upon the sand beneath my feet and all around me. Then I hear the waves on either side as their alternating rhythms echo along the shoreline, and the sound of others; who swoosh in harmony with each other.

I breathe the ocean air fragrant with the scent of seaweed, the humid air heavy with the smell of sea salt. Not a bottle of perfume, not a scented candle or a moisturizer for the skin, but the real thing direct from nature’s source.

I see a pen wash up onto the beach. “Carnival Cruises” proudly emblazed upon its long thin body. This is a sign of my future – a pen for the writer. My eyes glimpse a feather nestled amongst the seaweed. I retrieve the plume; meant to decorate and enhance the pen of my calling. The ocean speaks to me of my destiny and my fate is sealed, written upon the sands of time. A writer I am and a writer I must be.
