Biography

Five individuals gather loosely at the center of the basement floor. Looking a bit tired from a long night practice, they put their instruments down to discuss the non-music aspects of the band. Most important to the discussion is the question: How do we define ourselves? Who or what defines our sound? It's not an easy task to tackle this question...So, how do you define what we do, who we are, who influences us?

The five members of the band Word of Mouth sit and sprawl contemplatively thinking about this question. Michele, the bass player is the one who started the conversation. Providing the baseline of the discussion much in the same way the she provides the steady bassline of the band. To her right lies Steve, the drummer, adding his thoughts and direction to the discussion, again much in the same way as he contributes direction to the music. Across from Steve sits Scott, guitar player and primary songwriter of the group, keeping the discussion focused. To Scott's left is Matt, the other guitar player and quiet catalyst, occasionally throwing out ideas in the same way that he adds a guitar solo to the mix. Across from him stands Jim, lead singer and enigmatic frontman of the group. Jim throws out the occasional joke and keeps the group 'loose'. The discussion often centers around his words in the same fashion that our music centers around his vocals.

The collective members come from different backgrounds, areas, life styles, and ages. Each influenced by something different but each only cares about what is written/performed collectively with purpose and thought. It’s about music, and only the music.

The group now sits silently for a minute. The question posed should have an answer, but how to put that answer into words still eludes them. We definitely have a unique sound, and everyone is very excited about that quality. Its almost as if there are too many directions to go with the conversation. Thoughts on the subject are as diverse as our music. This band is unable to define themselves by one genre, restrain themselves to stay within one certain style.

This band has the ability to tap into the darkest corners of the human experience. There is no message behind what they write, rather a flight of ideas and emotions that describe the human condition. Perhaps a definition of what we are NOT may be more appropriate. We are not a metal band, although some of our songs can have the signature guitar crunch associated with such a style. We are not a Jazz band, but many of our songs casually slip into Jazz stylings. We are not a country band or punk band, but small influences of both those sounds creeps into our music. Overall our sound is based on strong songwriting and attention to detail. In experiencing of this music you’ll find yourself getting into some groove then feeling like someone just slapped you to pay attention and listen. We like to pull people into our songs, make them feel and visualize the experience not just bob their heads to a beat.

So, This is what we are: rock music with diverse undertones. Don't believe us... just listen. The only true way to measure our sound is to listen to it. We are Word of Mouth.
