Reviews of Michael's Work

TERMINATOR (1984)

Terminator can truly be termed a "classic" film. It's well-structured, well-acted, very involving, and it's original! Its special effects may not have been as expensive (or extensive) as its more touted sequel, Terminator II, but they worked, and they didn't overwhelm the story.

I absolutely love Terminator. It takes a fresh approach to the familiar theme about a desperate fight to save humanity. And it presents a powerfully compelling love story that transcends time itself. Favorite scene: Sarah, in response to Kyle's confession of love, gently taking his face in her hand and turning it toward her. A beautifully touching moment that reveals our hero's vulnerability. All this time, Kyle has been taking care of Sarah, holding his own feelings for her inside, but here, she takes care of him. How many women have wished they were Sarah at that moment?

The oft-used time-travel plot is imaginatively handled here. The device of the photo is an inspiration. We first see it when Kyle is describing his life as a warrior to Sarah. Later, in the motel, he tells her about it, how he'd memorized it, and how he'd wondered what she'd been thinking at the moment it had been taken. Finally, at the end, we see it being taken, and we know then that she'd been thinking of him! Wow! Very effectively done!

Michael as Kyle Reese is wonderful in Terminator, and it's unfortunate that his performance has been so little recognized or appreciated. Kyle remains my favorite of his film characters, probably because I think that Kyle is the best conceived of them all. We actually get to know him, what he's like and why, and Michael's portrayal is perfect as he reveals the fearless fighter, the courageous, self-sacrificing hero, and the lonely man, who dreams of and finally finds the woman he loves. There's tremendous poignancy in Kyle that completely engages this viewer's emotions and sympathy. And we're even given a flash of that wonderful smile! I've never seen any actor outdo or even equal Michael as a romantic hero, which is one reason I find him so special.
