Reviews of Michael's Work

JADE (1995)

Opening with the brutal off screen killing of a rich and influential man, Jade centers on the search for his murderer with Assistant DA David Corelli (David Caruso) handling the lion's share of the investigation. As Corelli pursues every lead, bodies begin piling up, and he uncovers a sexual blackmail scheme linked to powerful political figures. However, most disturbing of all, he begins to suspect that his former lover, now the wife of his close friend, may somehow be involved and the murderer's next target.

Michael plays Bob Hargrove, one of the police officers assigned to the case. At first, he seems a typical detective, but gradually we realize that the relationship between him and Corelli is a strained one. As the story progresses, so does their hostility toward each other, and eventually the question arises as to whether Hargrove is playing some game of his own.

Perhaps Jade's primary problem is that it immerses itself so completely in a sordid world rife with sexual perversion and morally degenerate characters. Aside from an older cop who gets to spout a few good one-liners, there's next to no one to like or to root for. Even hero Corelli is so relentlessly somber and melancholy that it's impossible to work up enough energy to care about him one way or the other. In short, Jade creates an oppressively sinister atmosphere that does not make for an entertaining film watching experience.

Michael looks good, especially if you like him in collegiate attire and sporting a mustache. During his limited time on screen, he delivers a workman-like performance in a role that offers him few challenges. For Michael's fans, Jade is worth seeing, but it's not a film that's likely to inspire repeated viewings.
