GENEALOGICAL FILES FOR THE FAMILY

"MARR/MARRS/MARS"

I have researched my family of Marr's and found that they lived in SOUTH CAROLINA from 1775 to about 1800 when they moved to TENNESSEE and lived the next 70-80 years in Eastern Tennessee in the Counties of Rhea, McMinn, Monroe and Polk. They were primarily farmers although several became miners and worked in the TN Polk Co. copper mines.

If you have traced your Marr's back to this time period and in the same general area, let's compare notes and see if we are not cousins! I have organized each generation on it's own page and used a family group file format to display family data on each generation. A page of additional data on the Patriarch as been added where facts are known.   The Marr tree may go back further in time than is shown as there is some evidence that James' father may be an Andrew Marr of Charleston SC but it is not conclusive.

The genealogy information in this file was obtained from many sources; with the U.S. Census being the primary source. Other Marr researchers provided data or insight for this effort include David P. Smith of Ill, Nancy Marr Engard of K.C. Mo and Clyda "Marr" Palmer of Utah. I have found two cousins who have provided names of ancestors for their branches which have been added to the original listing.  Betty Webb of SARAHJAMES@aol.com provided information on the descendants of Grant/Aaron Marr (1800)  and Doris Pierce of ginlu@bellsouth.net provided information on the descendants of Elizabeth Marr (abt. 1780).  Their inputs can be found as link off of their grand parent's page.  The family group sheet for Loyd Marr (abt 1792), son of James Marr (abt 1755) is also included as a link off of James Marr's page.  Data for Loyd Marr's page was taken from the data supplied by David P. Smith of Ill.

I have also included a brief history of each period to help understand the living conditions of the time of these ancestors. Several pictures are included to help illustrate the issues covered.

The "Marr/Marrs/Mars" name was given to several early geographical and historical sites and structures in Eastern Tennessee and are worthy of note even if they can not be tied specifically to my branch of the Marr family. These are discussed briefly on other pages.

I attempted to segregate the data for each generation to help other Marr researchers to see if their data could match with what I have collected. I have listed only the names of the children and some of their spouses where known; although I have addition information on some families, however for the sake of brevity and to simplify the files I have not included them. If you think any of these names are on your family list, contact me and I will be glad to share or include your data with what I have.

One of the more interesting items found in the Monroe Co. deed book was a an "Indenture" dated 1834 whereby William Marr and his brother Joseph Marr borrowed $275  to establish a working farm that would grow pigs and also produce whiskey. The hand written "Indenture" gives a snapshot of the commercial farming of the day.

The Nancy "Marr" Engard, mentioned above, has great collection of  information on the Marr's in Tenn and Mo. and is specifically searching for James Allen Marr from Central Tenn in the mid 1800's.  She also has information on Marr's in North Carolina in the late 1700's.  She can be contacted on e-mail address .NanGard@aol.com
