Recent updates - Ella Keays Buchanan, daughter of Martha E. Thompson and Thomas Keays, family numbered as #45 was expanded, after receiving a newspaper notice from Glen Couch of Ontario.
This particular Thompson family tree, follows, goes to about 1920. It comprises the factual information that was used to 'back trace' John Thompson. Post 1920's and more recent information is typed into the Bollerud family tree, which includes the Vingers, and grandma Beatta's ancestors. A research bibliography is kept separately for this tree, in addition to historical accounts, maps, and other local history and information. There is some historical information in the tree below, but mostly to maintain a time-line for each ancestor. This draft is mainly for research, so that it can be quickly viewed by other researchers, and passed back and forth, but it does contain some family history and background information. It can be 'dry reading', but the people did incredible things. A copy was sent to libraries in locales in which different branches of the tree migrated to snag the interest of any distant cousins. The history will become more vibrant as facts are added.
Most of the early Thompson records from England are from old parish church records. The primary reason that the Thompson bloodline, which originated in England, was mostly Scottish was because of the affiliation to Presbyterianism, the Congregationalist branch. In the early 1800's the explosive effect of the Napoleanic wars and the heavy burden of taxes had the effect of pushing the Presbyterians, both Scottish and English, to outward settlements. If the early Thompsons had been Scots, ironically there probably would not have been any proof that they were Scots. Scottish records are not nearly as informative as English in that time period. The English curates were so exacting in their record-keeping, the family tree in the genealogical sense, is not only provable, but is verifiable. There were a lot of people named Thompson in England, and more so in Scotland, but lucky for the Thompson tree of today, John W. Thompsonn married a blacksmith's daughter by the name of Temperley, which is a truly unique surname, and also unique in their non-conformism. The Temperleys were among the more successful of the Tyndale non-conformists, and were among the leading baptists and congregationalists making great gains in agriculture and business in the early 1800's, asserting themselves into the societal and political realms. John Thompson was traced by tracing his wife, and his wife's ancestry. One common theme throughout the Thompson family tree is that neighbors usually married neighbors, Presbyterians usually married Presbyterians. The congregationalists were emerging from their meeting houses into the productive mainstream, while Great Britain struggled against the French, pushing their resources beyond manageable limits, and shifting the burden to the weary masses who were quick to protest. The opportunity for John W. Thompson to claim Crown acreage did come with a price, being pushed to the edge of civilization, in effect a buffer between Canada and the U.S. This push to the buffer zone began happening as soon as the War of 1812 had ended. Not all of the acreage claimed in this perioed was farmable land.
The intended end result is to add a travel narrative and to combine this with other portions of the combined family trees of John Samuel and Beatta (Vinger) Thompson. In September of 2003, the missing gap for John W. Thompson (born 1775) was shortened by quite a few years as the family was found to be residing in Montreal during the War of 1812. They lived very near the Champs de Mars in what is now called 'Old Montreal', and thereby added another Quayside locale to the travel narrative. The St. Gabriel church was reportedly located behind the courthouse on the Southwest corner of Champs de Mars. There are photos of the original church but it was reconstructed in 1905.
All of the churches as noted in the genealogy in England remain today, and are referenced below, including Castle Garth chapelry, where non-conformists could baptize their children (they could not marry there as they were required to be married within the Church of England). St. Nicholas, now known as the cathedral, is probably one of the most beautiful sights in Newcastle. This is where Ann and John went to post banns, a publication of notice that they were to be married. The actual marriage may have taken place in Scotland, where many congregationalists went to be married in their church.
The travel narrative received a significant bump upon discovery of the Montreal residence because John Thompson was so fastened to the occupation of tanner, his locale is easily assumed. By trade he was a cordwainer, his business for a time was wholesale boot and shoe manufacture. This is significant because the tanneries in Montreal are well documented, and are very close to where John must have lived, in the period 1812-1816. Because the war was raging, they had to have lived near the Champs de Mars. St. Gabriel church was their place of worship, situated adjacent to Champs de Mars. One can presume that the view from the hills, frequently sketched then and now, to the tanneries today was much the same back then.
The riverside locale in Montreal is a nice contrast to the first Thompson residence Quayside near the Tyne in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England, a snazzy pub and restaurant district current day. The homestead in Perth, Ontario would be situated in the Park current day, again situated on the river, the Tay in this instance. Grandpa John was born on the Scotch Line, just West of this first homestead granted to John W. Thompson by the crown in 1821. The Scotch line was given the name by virtue of the Scots being lined up in front of each claim, a shovel and tools granted to begin to create the requisite strip of road in front of each piece that would extend the edge of their civilization outward from the center of Perth, where the military depot was.
It is probable that John W. Thompson (1775-1841) was in the employ of a company or propreitorship that was indirectly involved with the fur trade. There is a high probability that he was in the employ of the Russia Company (also known as Muscovy) or some British concern of a similar 'imperialistic' nature. He was possibly in St. Petersburg Russia in 1809 during the Napoleanic War - Peninsular Campaign (Iberian meaning Spain, Portugal), however we are not able to prove this at current. John's daughter Elizabeth was born in 1809 but her exact date of birth is not available as a second source in Canada for comparison to the birth of an Elizabeth to a John and Ann Thompson in St. Petersburg in December of that year at the British Factory chapel. (Factory meaning commercial community then). Since St. Peterburg is probably not going to be a likely candidate for the travel narrative any time soon, we'll move this section to the 'work in progress' folder. One interesting thing about the consulate in St. Petersburg is that English protestants, Catholics, and conforming citizens were all marrying and baptizing in the same church - probably one of a handful situated in the world at that time where this could have occurred.
It is interesting that a shoemaker would shadow the military for many years; it seemed almost baffling upon investigation because John W. Thompson did not appear to have a military record, yet he was always in the proximity of war. The link-pin to understanding the unique migration is probably the Congregationalist church affiliation that was so closely adhered to by John W. Thompson, Ann Temperley his wife, their parents, relatives, and ancestors. The year 1812 also brought with it the peak of frustration in England of non-conformists (those not of the established Church of England). At this time, non-conformists were beginning to assert themselves, there were law changes (meeting house notices could be posted publicly), they began to hold public office, and populated the professions and educational institutions. There is probably a connection between non-conformism and the necessity to own and control land as well as do good work for the common good. Also, the economy in England was sagging severely in this time period, and non-conformists were especially feeling the tug of taxes from the war effort. The corn tax rebellions in England closely followed the emmigration of John W. and his family, the potential for rebellion probably a factor in the tolerant conclusion to the war of 1812. As Britain began to reach further and further for resources and capital, they extended a fast growing population of non-conformists to the edge of civilization. Many Scots were cleared from their land in Scotland as well, and subsequently migrated to Canada, a disturbing trend that would continue for many years, and continues to be a tender spot in the structural history of Scotland today. One of the Simpson brides, Margaret 'Jessie' McDonald Simpson, wife of Peter Simpson, mother of Ellen, was a Highlander who emigrated as a small girl with her large family in the 1840's.
There was one other element that made the pieces fall together more sensibly regards John W., that being the St. Gabriel Presbyterian Church in Montreal where John and wife Ann worshipped. The church was one of the first protestant churches in Montreal, and one of the first in Canada - but a key element was the fact that the great majority of the businesses and economy that bolstered Montreal in that time period were British concerns. This in a city of 16,000 of which 11,000 were Roman Catholics (in 1816). There was a constant worry being in such close proximity to the battles raging in the U.S. and Canada, the U.S. having declared war in June of 1812. Business in the fur trade however must have been flourishing at the time. British commerce was centered at the Tanneries located in the Eastern section of Montreal. Even though there were only 2000 Scots, 2000 English, and about 1800 Irish, the fur trade was lead by the expatriates. Even though the Thompson family was closer to the war of 1812 than they would have liked (they had one child, Carr, born at the beginning of the war of 1812 and one, George, born in 1814), there started an opportunity to claim Crown land in Perth, Upper Canada - which would later become known as Ontario.
So there is a link between the Scottish expatriates, the English non-conforrmists, Congregationalism, the fur trade, the Thompson family, the imperialistic British Crown, and Perth Ontario as buffer zone where the family would later stake their claim. Perth was a military encampment founded by the English but was populated mostly with Scots. Non-conformism was the basis for Canada's church, and Wesleyan Methodism was quickly adopted by the industrialized masses, then as the church of state. John W. Thompson, his sons including his oldest son William John, were cordwainers - essentially shoemakers - and were specialized in the area of tanning. The homestead in Perth had a large tannery attached to the house and large stables (this was in 1841 when John W. drew up his will). Church building was commonplace, and the Thompsons helped build the Perth Baptist church, earlier attending an array of circuit churches both Presbyterian and Methodist in the fledgling community. William J. Thompson (born 1801) was Baptist - a complexity in affiliation that is difficult to unravel but born of an era of congregationalism mixed with the influence of the fad called evangelicalism, and in the proximity of the church of Scotland that was gaining a foothold in Northeast England. The result was, oddly enough, that William John's descendants were Presbyterian leaning, and Carr's descendants Wesleyan leaning.
William John, who was the oldest son, was also at the age where he too could stake a small claim from the Crown, and he and his brothers were all cordwainers, their wholesale boot, shoe, and leather manufucture business being centered for a time in Perth - early 1800's. For a time, when the business was really flourishing, there was a sequence of land transactions, rather difficult to follow, but evidence that the business was growing. William John married Margaret Frost from Aberdeenshire Scotland, the daughter of a magistrate (then called a baillie), and the first of many Scottish brides in generations to follow. They had a large family, not unusual for that time, 9 boys and two girls. So the Thompson family became a fixture of Lanark County for the next 100 years and beyond. William John's oldest son Samuel married a Scot by the name of Henrietta Cowie, the daughter of a stonemason, Robert Cowie, who spent a number of years building the canal systems in New York. (Samuel was named after Samuel Frost, a relative of Margaret's). Henrietta died when her son Robert was seven, and so one presumes that Robert spent quite a bit of time at the neighboring residence of Peter Simpson, an industrious miller from Edinburgh. William John's grandson Robert would migrate West to Crystal City Manitoba, upon 320 acres where all but his youngest were born, then in May of 1891, when his baby John was 11 months old, would make his way to Nooksack in Washington State, U.S., having fortified his reserves at his father Samuel's house in Perth for the trip West. By this time, Samuel had remarried to Mary McKinlay, and his younger sons (Robert's half-brothers) William (born 1869) and Peter (named probably after Peter McKinley, Mary's father) would continue the Thompson name in Perth. The Thompson name was carried forward by many first, second, and third cousins of the growing family.
Robert and wife Ellen (Simpson) were preceded to the U.S. by Robert's cousin William J. Thompson (born 1862), who emmigrated in 1889, and Ellen's brother John Simpson, who married Annetta Krohm, a widower who was a community leader, pioneer, and school teacher. William J. would later become mayor of Sedro-Woolley in 1912, and was a teamster who managed some logging camps in Whatcom and Woolley. Annetta's first husband, Captain James Bell, staked land under the homestead act, which John Samuel Thompson would later purchase from his uncle and namesake, John Simpson. (James Bell having been murdered in a controversial and dark incident involving Louise Sam, was not able to prove up the claim upon the five year period of residence, so his son by Annetta, named JHK Bell, was assigned the land under an obscure provision of the homestead act. Women in 1884 were not always given the estate belonging to their dead husband. JHK would later honor his step father John Simpson by deeding over the land to him, and he would later write to local historian JR Jeffcott that he respected his step-father very much, and said that John Simpson had cleared the trees from the land - not an easy task.)
There were quite a few changes in store, rather hard to track, that formed the Thompson local history. Confusingly, Annetta Krohm's second husband was David Harkness, who died shortly after they were married. The Harkness house was directly adjacent to the cable at The Crossing, and Annetta, son JHK Bell, lived there for a time. David Harkness was John Simpson's business partner at Pioneer Livery in Whatcom, and Annetta did hold the license for the cable crossing until it was obsoleted by the bridge and railroad. Annetta Simpson was the first postmistress on record, in 1897. There were accelerated changes during the boom and bust years, and, some of the names that encircled the Thompson family were as follows:
- Pete Harkness, younger brother of David Harkness, worked with John Simpson at various times in the cartage business, was residing next door to Ever Everson on some census data, probably lived on the Bell claim for a time. Ever Everson's claim was adjacent West of the farm. He was a frequent visitor at the Thompson's for many years, and had some memory of the Louise Sam incident. Pete Harkness always resided in Nooksack/Everson, whereas JHK Bell was usually attending school in Canada.
- JHK Bell was educated in Canada, and moved to California in 1899. He lived in Long Beach, California, until about 1952. He mentioned in a letter to J.R. Jeffcott (the local author and historian) that Everson had changed beyond what he would like to hold as a fond memory, and that he probably would not return there, although he's buried in Nooksack cemetary. His father James Bell's grave is not to be found. Interestingly, he wrote Jeffcott after the book was published with many facts, and there are as many, if not more, details about Everson history in Jeffcott's files written after the publish date as before. Jeffcott would send a letter to past residents with a copy of the book, and ask for more details - and he received a lot of good information back. The files containing replies and notes are at WWU state archives.
- John Simpson's brother Henry died at a young age, as did his wife, and so his two children went to two different relatives. Christie went to live with Robert and Ellen Thompson, and Clarence went to live with John and Annetta Simpson. Christie married Glen Adamson and lived near San Francisco. Clarence was an engineer and lived in California. JHK Bell identified Henry Simpson in a photo published and taken at The Crossing, on the ferry scow, in a letter to J.R. Jeffcott after Jeffcott's book was published, including the picture.
William J. Thompson, brothers-in-law Robert Thompson and John Simpson were expert horsemen, John was a teamster by trade, and they were able to clear the trees from their land while working at varied local occupations. Robert, having been the first frog to leap to Manitoba, arrived in Whatcom by train in 1891, greeted by cousin William John Thompson and given a ride into Nooksack by John Simpson whose daily cartage to and from Whatcom was still profitable before the train track was laid across the new bridge near the Crossing. The boom days were over in Whatcom by 1893, and Nooksack Crossing was left as a cable demarcating the scow ferry crossing. Nooksack's key river Crossing and path to Sumas was no longer the only Northern route, and the Whatcom bust was the final straw.
Most folks, including the Simpsons, moved slightly North from the Crossing to what is now Everson, near Nooksack. Robert, a butcher upon first arriving in Nooksack, went to work for the post office, where his son John Samuel Thompson also later worked. Robert, still working his mail route, in 1914, bought a spot of land in Nooksack financed from an enterprising young lady from Wisconsin named Beatta Vinger, who was residing next door at the residence of her uncle Ben Bollerud, a banker. The land that John Simpson worked and later sold to his nephew John Samuel Thompson was next to Ever Everson's original claim, the town so named upon incorporation, its first mayor John Simpson.

Descendants of John Walton THOMPSON
Note: because this information is sometimes mailed electronically to researchers in Ontario, only pre-1900's information is included in this particular draft. All information is unverified. Living persons are not included in this particular draft in order to send electronically to sources – also to keep up with current confidentiality and identity issues. Any omissions or errors are unintentional. Only the first names of the researchers are shown. Bollerud tree contains active and current day info. The travel narrative is a work in progress, but the some of the churches in England as well as land in Perth and Crystal City have been located.
Note: in about March of 2003, Bill(Seattle) and Doris (Innisfil) began to verify and find records for the parents of John and Ann (Temperley) Thompson in the proximity of Warden and Simonburn parishes in Northumberland. John 1775-1841 was the first son of this family. This information was added in below very recently. These parish records are the only trace of geographical location in England, and are a work in progress. If Ann Temperley's ancestry is any indicator, the ancestry further back from this point in the genealogy, were most likely English. On the other hand, many congregationalists were Scots, and the wife of the first John Thompson had a very Scottish name-Esther Walton. Congregationalism was proven in this early ancestry, and was probably the primary reason for the emmigration to Canada in 1811.
John THOMPSON occupation: butcher
Spouse: Esther WALTON
Marriage: 20 MAR 1774 Hexham, Northumberland, England
1. John Walton1THOMPSON (John) was christened 12 MAR 1775 in Hexham, Northumberland, England [1], the first son of John Thompson, butcher, and Esther Walton of Warden parish, Northumberland. Died 16 Oct 1841, buried Craig Street Cemetery, Town of Perth, Ontario, Canada (Old Burying Grounds) .[97] [2]. John signed a will in Ontario, probated in 1842.
<genealogically, the monument inscription "66 years, 8 months" helps to prove out Johns christening date. - Doris Anderson visited Craig Street..>
He married Ann TEMPERLEY on April 28, 1800, by publishing Banns at St. Nicholas Parish Church [90] [3], Newcastle, Nbl, England. Ann was born June 1777 [137] at Falstone Presbyterian Church (then) Simonburn parish, Nbl, the daughter of William and Isabel Temperley. Ann died in October 1852, in Perth, Ontario. She was 75 years old.
The Family was residing in probably the St. Nicholas district of Newcastle 1800 to 1804. They later emigrated to Quebec before May of 1812, John may have been associated, as a civilian, with the military or was employed by a company that was associated with the military - records show his occupation as shoemaker during the time he was in Montreal. His duration in Montreal began and ended with the War of 1812.
John and Ann may have been married outside of Newcastle [93], possibly Scotland, as so many Congregationalists did at that time. They published banns in Newcastle.
They immigrated to Montreal about 1812, very close to the time that Carr was born in May. They moved to Perth, in Lanark County about 1818. John W. Thompson's house was the third built in Perth per newspaper accounts, the first being the government store. Perth, Ontario, was established in 1816 as a British military settlement and was initially populated from the disbanded Canadian Regiment of Fencible (Infantry) and other Montreal based regiments, and civilians from Upper Canada (now Quebec) including military settlers that lived near the Champs de Mars, near the garrison in Montreal.
Ann, widow age approaching 75, was living with son, Carr in January of 1852 in Perth, ON as per the 1851/2 Census.

(If this is the right family, then John would have sold this lot, because the property in Perth was patented in 1821).
John's occupation was cordwainer primarily, he was also a farmer. He had a tannery adjoining a large house in Perth, and the family business was primarily shoemaking. The house, tannery, and stables at the property in town were moved into son Carr's name after John died, as Carr was fully involved in the shoemaking business there. As the land was granted by the Crown, the petition was searched and verified, then re-patented to Carr in 1842 by the Heir and Devisee commission so that it could be in his name. There was no bill of sale.
The business was written about later as being a wholesale shoe, boot, and leather manufacture company. In England, the cordwainers did not cobble shoes, but many cordwainers were primarily tanners, and John probably was in this category. His first son William John was a cordwainer and continued the family business of wholesale leather manufacture and shoemaking, along with Carr who concentrated primarily on shoemaking.
Ann Temperley was living with son Carr in January of 1852 in Perth. [1]

Therefor the above record for Nicholas of Caledonia does match in reference to the dates as the fourth child. 'In his 22nd year' meaning he was approaching his 22nd birthday.
4. Carr John [2]THOMPSON (John Walton1) was born 1812 in Quebec [14], and died Sep 17, 1876 [15] [110] in Perth, Ontario, Canada. He married Hannah KELLY Jun 15, 1844 in Bathurst District, Perth, Lanark, ONT [16]. Bathurst District was absorbed into Lanark and Renfrew counties in 1849. Bathurst Township, Lanark County resides next to Perth town, and West of Drummond township, current day.
Hannah KELLY was b. 1826 and d. 1920 [Source reference is unavailable, there are many cross references.]
In 1841, 'through the efforts and donations' of Carr and friends in and around Perth, Perth Baptist Church was erected on the site of the present building. Also listed were Peter McKinley, John Thompson, James Flintoff, Wm. Thompson, and Alex. Cameron. Samuel's branch of tree is mostly presbyterian – e.g. from Samuel forward. Carr's children were baptized in the Wesleyan Methodist Church.
1871 census shows location as Bathurst, division 1, Lanark South. Occupation shoemaker, origin, English.
Descendant's records were mostly from Methodist Church transcriptions, secondary - online via LGS. C. Methodist on 1881 census. Doris Anderson also has some cemetary monument photographs. The monuments are in good condition.
Children of Carr THOMPSON and Hannah KELLY are:
32. i. Elizabeth Ann[3]THOMPSON, b. 1845 or 1846 [17]; m. (1st) Henry MAYBERRY, Aug 7, 1865, Perth ON [18]; m. (2nd) James KENNEDY, May 26, 1888, Lanark co. ON [19]. She was residing in Montreal in 1910 [190]

33. iv. Martha Eliza [3] THOMPSON, b. Dec 17, 1851 [20], baptized in 29 Feb 1852 Perth ON [21]. see Ref to Thomas KEYS / KEAYS [165][191] and 2nd marriage to John Swan referrred to in newspaper notices.
v. Anne THOMPSON, b. Jan 12, 1854 [20], Perth ON [22]. [Lizzie?]. Anne is probably the 'Mrs. Campbell referred to in newspapers as having residence in Powassan in 1910.
vi. Robert Mutton [3] THOMPSON b. Mar 9 1858 baptized Jun 17 1859 [142] d. 18 Nov. 1874 p. Perth, ON [109] at age 17, accidental.
vii. Christopher THOMPSON born abt 1860. From Canadian census. Was listed on a census in 1880 in Michigan, age 21. Was not on first batch of church records. [165] poss. residing Commanda, Ont. per Old Perthite Reunion 1905. May have resided Verner Ontario in 1908, and in the U.S. in 1910.
23. viii. George W. [3] THOMPSON [92], b. 12/11/1862 p. Perth, Ontario d. 8/11/1921.
ix. Euphemia Cameron THOMPSON, b. Apr 8, 1865 [20], Perth ON [25].
This Euphemia C. Thompson on record at Old Methodist Cemetery -Sherbrooke Street, Perth, Ont. As died in infancy, four months old. Presents interesting genealogical mechanics because a Euphemia Richardson Thompson Cameron who married in Perth is not related to this family tree of Thompsons, or is not yet determined to be so. Her first husband James Thompson is probably not related either. After she was first widowed, her husband's Crown land claim was transferred from the Crown to her name, and it was a few lots from the JW Thompson residence and tannery on Cockburn Island in town, which Carr had later transferred into his name from the Crown after his father died. An Alex. Cameron did help build the Baptist church with Carr - but which Alex. Cameron is unknown. Further, Stephen Mutton, who married Eliza Thompson, was a witness to the unrelated Euphemia's marriage. Perth was quite a small place in that time period, and the names do run together in such a way that can be difficult to verify. As example, there were nine Alex Camerons in Lanark county at one time. Further, one of Euphemia Cameron's sons, from her second marriage also named Alex Cameron, was very near the age of the Alexander Cameron who married Hannah Thompson, daughter of William J (1801-1884). and Margaret (Frost) Thompson, but is also unrelated.
Euphemia Richardson probably married James Thompson in Scotland, so James is unrelated as well. It appears to be just coincidence that the two Thompson families were living close together - and Euphemia was a Thompson for a very short time and would eventually remarry to Mr. Cameron. The most likely scenario is that all of the individuals, the Camerons included, were members of the same church, therefor they were in close proximity. James Thompson just happened to draw a lot on Cochburn island, situated very close to John W. Thompson.
x. Henry G THOMPSON, b. Abt 1867 [26]; m. LILY F UNDERHILL, Jan 5, 1893, Perth ON [27]. Possibly lived in Sudbury, Canada in 1905. Lily UNDERHILL was d/o Henry UNDERHILL and Margaret FOULDS. Was probably the same individual listed as in the Perth Old Boys reunion of 1905, residence Sudbury.

William John Thompson moved away from home at age 20, worked for Canadian Pacific Railway, while living in Moosomin, Sask. (Then called Assiniboia) where he remained for three years. He fought with Major Boulton's scouts in the 2nd Riel rebellion 1885, and was engaged in several skirmishes. He returned to Moosomin after the rebellion where he stayed until the following winter. First to Vancouver, he moved to Seattle before Washington became a state, building bridges and docks. Obtained U.S. citizenship 1890 [168] Was in Whatcom county in 1892, where he married Louise Graham. He managed logging camps, and may have opened a bank for a time in Sedro-Woolley which burned down about a year after opening. Wm. John was first and foremost a horseman, his livery business was sold in Sedro-Woolley when he entered public service. He gratified his passion for fine horses by keeping pedigreed stallions. While he timed his horses on the track (Nortwood ran under 2:17), he never raced them. He was a councilman 1910 and mayor of Sedro-Woolley, 1912. He opened the Third street bridge while mayor, and the bridge was frequently called the Thompson bridge. He died in an automobile wreck Aug 14, 1914. The Thompson bridge at Janneke Cove no longer exists but was about a mile upriver of where the current bridge stands across the Skagit. His son William G. served aboard Wasknwall (marines) in World War I. See William J. Thompson biographical.
Louise Graham was a native of Berlin, Germany. Her father died in Germany when she was a small girl, and she immigrated with her mother to Michigan, coming later to Whatcom with a sister. Her mother died in Michigan in 1896. [149]

132. Researcher notes that the name of the widow of Nicholas Temperley [2]THOMPSON was Hannah (TULLY) THOMPSON also, significant because the son from that marriage was listed as one of the children of Wm. John and Margaret FROST in one of the obits. Therefor it is possible that the widow Hannah was residing at that household as well. Since most information is unverified at this time, from secondary not primary sources, there is a possibility of mistakes also. Researcher thinks it's important to point out however that Hannah Cameron wrote down dates and names and sent them to Robert [4]. Because she wrote down these dates, it was very easy to piece together the family tree, simply by cross-matching her dates with records indexes. Because she was always referred to as Mrs. Alex. Cameron, the issue of her first name is still unresolved. Hannah is an old form of Anna, her mother's name being Ann.

165 – Research Notes
Note: The age of Martha KEYS in this record has been cross referenced to footnote 185. She could be Martha Eliza above, which assumes then that William in below census would be her first son. The birth date and age are slighly off (two yrs rather than 1) but she was a December baby. She, according to newspaper notices, was first married to Mr Keays. She later married John SWAN. Apparently Mr Keays died, and she remarried probably sometime after 1881 to Mr Swan. Ella Keays was mentioned as a daughter from the first marriage in the obit, but it would appear there were more children.
Christopher THOMPSON was not in first batch of church records. Possibility would arise as to whether he was residing to help out large widowed family, maybe a relative from another family close by, same church. Probably son of Hannah. Note: Secondary information found for Christopher Thompson, see footnotes 185, 186; this entry Dec 2002.
