Simple Man's Urantia Book
The Celestial Hosts

I am alone in my home study sitting at the computer. My cat Emmett has just wandered in and is looking to jump on my lap. I can’t type while he is sitting with me and so we are engaging in a battle of wills. He tries to jump up, I try to prevent him. Well, now he’s wandering away to find another place to sleep. I’m sure he’ll be back, but for the time being I am alone again with my thoughts. But am I really?

One of the more interesting ideas in the Urantia Book is that members of the celestial hosts, God’s army if you will, are with us as we are going about our daily lives. This has started movements that attempt to contact these celestial hosts like the Teaching Mission. Support for a multitude of beings surrounding us is hinted at in many places but has one primary source – Paper 113 Seraphic Guardians of Destiny. In it we are told that depending upon our attainment of the circles of intellectuality and spirituality depends upon the number of angels ministering to us. Two seraphim and a company of cherubim per one thousand people in the seventh circle – the same number per ten people in the fourth circle. For those who reach the third circle, two seraphim are permanently attached for life. Regardless of where we are on our spiritual path it sounds as if we are frequently visited by angelic personalities in addition to the ministry of our Thought Adjuster and the “manifold agencies and influences of the Infinite Spirit.”

So there is the chance that right now as I am working in my study it could be getting pretty crowded. My cat can’t even find room enough to walk through the throngs. Seriously, The Urantia Book leads me to believe that I currently am not alone, but how do I really know? I can’t provide evidence in support of it. I can’t design an experiment and somehow prove it to a skeptical public. But it doesn’t seem that proof or the lack thereof is the point.

What I get out of this information is not the idea that my room is crowded with beings but that I am not alone in my struggles. God has provided enormous support for me and others on the same path to help us reach our potential. The entire hosts of heaven are arrayed to help us on our eternal journey. And this is ongoing regardless of who we are or where we are in our spiritual development. Our guardian angels are present to help us by “guiding the footsteps of the human personality into paths of new and progressive experiences” (1245.3). Proof matters not. What is important is the assurance that God has provided helpers who minister to us, care for us, and help us as we struggle through the challenges of life.

Emmett is back. He has curled up in my in-box. He is not aware of the presence of angels in the room. Nor of the Spirit of God that encircles us. Nor of the Mystery Monitor that is always present. He is not aware of how crowded this room is. Am I aware? I am not sure. It doesn’t matter though. What matters is I am not alone.

God Bless You,
