George sailed for the US from Liverpool in August 1881 with his wife, children, and brothers Samuel and Job, arriving in New Orleans on October 27. They started a boot business in San Antonio, Texas (see Samuel), but George later moved back to London England. George must have lived in the US before the 1881 trip, since the 1881 census for Painswick Glouscester indicate the two children living at home with George and his wife Lydia (i.e. Kate and Hartman) were born in the US. He died on 13 Jun 1927 in Blaenavon, Monmouthshire, Wales.⁽¹⁸⁹⁾ In the 1871 census, Ham is listed as a carpenter. I cannot find him in the 1881 Monmouthshire census index. According to his obituary, he had been "retired from business" for about 3 years at the time of his death. Ham had been treasurer of the Blaenavon Branch of the National Union of Enginemen, Firemen, Mechanics and Electrical Workers for 20 yrs. He was also an old member of the Workman's Institute Committee, the Trademen's Fund, and the old Sliding Scale Committee, and was recently appointed one of the trustees of the Trades and Labour Council.

At the time of his death he was a widower living at 96 High St, Blaenavon Parents: William WITCHELL and Elizabeth UNKNOWN.

Hanna WITCHELL⁽²⁶⁾ was born about 1785 in England.⁽¹³²⁾ Date of birth based on age at death noted in family bible. She died on 25 Mar 1846 in Blaevanon, Wales.⁽¹³²⁾ According to family bible, Hanna was 61 when she died. She was buried on 28 Mar 1846 in St. Peters Churchyard, Blaenavon, Wales.⁽⁴²⁾ Although marraige records indicate that Hannah was of the parish of Weston, there is indirect evidence that she is really William's cousin, the daughter of Robert Witchell. This evidence includes the fact that Moses Cole was a witness at her wedding in Weston (Moses was the brother of Robert's wife Eleanor) and that Hanna's oldest son was named Moses, her estimated date of birth (Robert's daughter was christened February 14, 1786), and entries submitted by Mary Thompson Richards, Shadrach Empy (both film #177847), and Jane Witchell Vaughan (film #177958) and included in the IGI that suggest ties through Hannah to the families of Robert Witchell and his wife Eleanor Cole. Jane Witchell Vaughan was Hannah's daughter Jane.

It is likely that Robert's daughter Hannah was sent into service in Weston, and she gained a settlement there.

In the two months leading up to William's death, the parish paid money to his family, "his being very ill." Following his death William Witcholls widow and 7 (?) children received "casual pay" twice a month, and in June/July 1822 were added to "common pays" (i.e. a monthly pension). I have not read far enough in the Overseer's Accounts to know how long this continued.

Witchell Hy. Boot and Shoe Maker, Broad St. is listed in the 1884, 1891 and 1901 Kelly Trade Directory for Monmouthshire. The 1901 Directory also shows Henry Witchell, Boot and Shoe Maker, in Ebbw Vale and Abertillery. The Directory listing for 1910 and 1914 reads: Witchell Henry and Son, Boot and Shoe, 95 Broad Street. The shoe shop is not mentioned in the 1920 Directory.

According to documents in the Monmouthshire County Records Office, Henry leased 532.5 square meters of land at Waun Fields from John Malcolm of the Iron and Steel Company and on Sept 29 1871 was given permission to build 5 houses on the land. Henry also appears to have had some interest in a beer house on Broad St. called the Golden Boot which at one point he rented to someone called Lupton. He died in a train wreck. The November 18, 1901 Detroit Evening News reported the following: Among those reported killed in the Wabosh Wreck is Job Witchell of the firm Witchell Sons & Co., Detroit. For 3 months past Mr. Witchell, who was in Texas, had made plans to come home for Thanksgiving and was returning from Dallas on a through car. His wife & son Sholto were in the depot last night waiting the train.

By 1861 he has moved back to LLanover Upper and is living at Lower Brick Yard. He is listed as a coal miner. He is still at Lower Brick Yard in 1871, but is again working as an ironstone miner.
