Antrim Census. He too was a linen weaver. A George Whitten appears in the Sacramento,
California City Directory in 1869 (the same year Robert first appears in the
San Francisco Directory). George is listed as a bartender, working and living
at 15 Front St. In 1870 and 1871 he and someone named Maharry are listed as
proprieters (?) of the CPRR saloon at 7 J St. He is missing from the 1872 Directory,
but in 1873 he and Desedario Quanchi have a Coffee Stand at 15 Front Street.
In 1874 he is working in a saloon in San Francisco but in 1875 and 1876 he is
back working in saloons in Sacramento. There is no Sacramento Directory for
1877. George is in the 1878 Sacramento Directory, but no occupation is given.
I cannot find him in either the Sacramento or San Francisco directory for 1879,
but there is a George Whitten listed as a laborer at the Pac Rolling Mill in
the 1880 San Francisco City Directory. I have been unable to track him beyond
this, until his obituary appears in 1883.

People Worth Knowing, is an article about Cliff Witchell that says when he was
a lad of 11 years (that was in the days when San Antonio had about 36,000 people)
he was a merchant hawking strawberries from door to door. The money Witchell
made selling strawberries enabled him to buy a white donkey, and in the mid-1890's
he was a familiar figure in downtown San Antonio delivering Western Union messages
astride his donkey.
