bullet Hanna WEBB(33) was born about 1769. (35) Based on age at time of death for an Ann Witchell, who is right age to have been Daniel's wife. She was buried on 17 Nov 1857 in St. James Parish, Westerleigh, Gloucester, England. (35) This is the date of burial for an Ann Witchell, who according to the Parish Register was 88 at the time of her death. This is probably Hanna Webb Witchell. Also known as Anna? Baptisms in the parish register list children of Daniel and Hanna and children of Daniel and Anna. I assume Hanna and Anna are the same person.

In the 1851 census there is an Ann Witchwell (??) an 87 yr. old widow from Westerleigh, listed as a lodger in a residence also occupied by Diana Wright (widow, 73, pauper, Westerleigh) and George Witchell (47, Shoemaker, Westerleigh). Could this be Hanna Webb Witchell?

(169) There is a Catherine Whitton listed as a 8 yr. old sister of Robert in the 1851 Antrim Census. There is a 27 yr. old Catherine Whitten in San Francisco (1870 Census) listed as a Housekeeper, and living in the same Ward(12) as a John Whitten. An 1869 marriage anouncement in the San Francisco Call newspaper shows John Whitten marrying Catherine Whitten on Sept. 11. An affidavit of Henry Van Reuben filed in support of Robert Whitten's pension request says that Henry knew Robert's sister Catherine. The blood relationship between Catherine Whitten and John Whitten is unknown.

After her husband died in 1892, Catherine applied for a military (Civil War) pension. She was living at 1314 4 1/2 St. SW, Washington D.C. (this is also where her husband died). They apparently owned the house, but owed a debt of about $800.00. Shortly after she sold that house and bought another at no. 88 K St. NE., incurring a debt of $1,100!

Birth year calculated from ages given on the 1870 and 1880 censuses would be 1834 and 1833 respectively. He died on 13 May 1892 in Washington, D.C..(169) John died of gastric cancer. He was buried in Congressional Cemetery, Washington, D.C..(169) Though John has the same surname as his wife, the blood relationship (if any) between these two is unknown. The first record of John in the U.S. is his enlistment in the army in New York City on December 22, 1854. John was career military, serving at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; Fort Barrancas, Florida; Fort Point, California; Point San Jose, California; Charleston, South Carolina; Fort McHenry, Maryland: and Washington, D.C.
He retired in 1885 as a sergeant.

bullet John George WHITTEN(167) (167)(173) was born on 2 Jan 1915 in College Point, NY. He died on 23 Nov 1962 in Huntington, NY. (80) He died unexpectedly of a heart attack. Baptized 1915 (St. John's?) and confirmed 1928 at St. John's Lutheran Church, College Point.

In the mid 1930's John attended college at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He lived with his brother Robert. He studied Aeronautical Engineering, and Jane Whitten says he was in a program where he went to school for three months then worked for three months. During the summers he worked at Edo (sp.?) an airplane parts company (?) in College Point. John did not have the money to finish college, and when he left (I think after completing 3 years) he went to work for Edo full time. After Edo he worked for a company in Farmingdale (Sikorsky?) but commuted to NYC (?) At the beginning of 1942, he transferred to Brewster in Pennsylvania (Willow Grove). He joined Republic Aviation in Farmingdale in the summer of 1944, and worked there until his death. In 1948 he spent time in Alamogordo, New Mexico working on the first guided missile. He was also involved in the design of the first ejection seats for fighter jets.

(174) Services at the mortuary of W.C. Lasswell & Co., 6154 Mission. After her mother's death, Margaret went to live with family (?) members. She remained in San Francisco when brothers moved East. In 1901 she was living in Colma, San Matero County with her husband. Her obituary says she was a "pioneer school teacher" and that she was living in Colma when she died. In the 1950 San Francisco City Telephone Directory she is listed under Mrs. Margaret Pauline Brown living at 160 Washington, Colma. She had a Plaza telephone exchange. In the 1930, 1935, 1940, 1942 and 1947 directories she is also listed under Mrs. Margaret Pauline Brown, Colma, with a Randolph telephone exchange. Her husband does not appear to be listed in any of these directories, nor is she listed in the 1929 directory.

California Death Index lists McCullogh as Margaret' s father's last name. Presumably this is the family she lived with when she was growing up. Did they legally adopt her? Parents: Robert WHITTEN and Margaret Jane FRAZER.

bulletRobert WHITTEN(170) (175)(67) (66)(61) (32)(176) was born on 27 Oct 1836 in Newton Crommlin, Co. Antrim, Ireland.(32) In pension records, place of birth is given as Newtown Crumbland. My translation is based on two Genealogical Atlases of Ireland (Mitchell, 1986; Gardner et al., 1964) He was described as 5' 8" tall; fair complexion; blue eyes; brown hair in 1860 in N.Y, N.Y..(32) He died on 2 Aug 1921 in Brooklyn, New York. (32) I have found a Robert Whitton (the old spelling of the name) in the 1851 Antrim Ireland census. He was a 14 year old linen weaver. I believe this is the same Robert Whitten recorded here. The first record of Robert in the U.S. is in NYC where on December 28, 1860 he enlisted in Co. A of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. On a form he filled out in 1920, Robert indicated that his occupation at the time he enlisted was stone-cutter.

Robert was stationed at Fort Pickens Florida, where he was "taken sick" on June 14, 1861. On December 9, 1861 he was sent to General Hospital, Washington D.C. for treatment. On February 24, 1862 he was diagnosed with "chronic rheumatism to the degree of 1/2" and was discharged for chronic disability on the same date. After his discharge, he apparently returned to NYC where a John Whitten (supposedly no relation, but later to become his brother-in-law) reported that he saw him in May 1864.

The same John Whitten reported seeing Robert in San Francisco in 1868 (John was stationed there). In an affidavit filed in support of Robert's pension application, Henry Van Reuben states that he first saw Robert in San Francisco in 1866. Robert does not appear in the San Francisco City Directory until 1869, where he is listed as a carpenter living at "Second Street House." In 1871 he lived at 227 Second St. and by 1872 he had moved to 15 1/2 Sumner, where he remained for the rest of his time in San Francisco. His move to Sumner probably coincided with his marriage in August 1871. According to Paula Whitten Kimbell, Robert met his wife Margaret while working for her father. On August 10, 1871 Robert was naturalized in California 15th District Court. In 1880, the year his wife Margaret died, Robert applied for a military pension.

Robert continued to be listed (as a carpenter) in the San Francisco City Directory through 1883. He is not in the 1884 directory, but the Van Reuben affidavit places him in San Francisco in 1884. He may have gone for a short time to Oregon after his brother George's death there in 1883. On his pension records Robert listed Oregon as one of the places he had lived. Robert reappears in the 1885 and 1886 San Francisco Directories, still working as a carpenter. Perhaps disillusioned with his life in the west (he had lost a son in 1879, a wife and daughter in 1880, and a brother and a sister-in-law in 1883) Robert left for New York City, first placing his two sons in an orphanage and his daughter with a family who adopted her (?). After remarrying in New York in 1887 he sent for his sons, who joined him there.

In 1890 Robert was living in NYC (362E ? St.). In 1915 he was at 804 Mason St., Brooklyn and at the time of his death 401 Chauncy Street, Brooklyn. According to Paula Kimbell, Robert left each of his grand-daughters $150.00 and John Whitten $500.00 in trust until they were 21.
