He was buried in Pittston Cemetery, PA.⁽¹⁷⁾ In Brotton, George worked as an Ironstone Miner. The 1900 census has George arriving in this country in 1884, the 1910 census shows him arriving in 1885. He was a coal miner who could neither read nor write. Parents: Martin HICKS and Mary Ann LENG.

George William HICKS⁽⁵⁰⁾⁽¹²⁾ was born between 1872 and 1878 in Brotton, North Riding, Yorkshire, England.⁽⁷⁸⁾⁽⁵⁰⁾⁽¹²⁾ Calculated from his age on the 1881 Census Index for Brotton, George would have been born abt 1872 (long befor his parents marriage). Since this is the index, and not the original census, the age given may be a misreading of the original (e.g. a 4 misinterpreted as a 9).
George's age on the 1910 Laflin census would place his birthdate abt. 1878. A birthdate of 1874 or 1875 is consistent with information given in his obituary. He died between 1932 and 1938 in Laflin, PA.⁽⁵⁰⁾ George was employed for 29 years as a hoisting engineer at Laflin colliery. When the mine was abandoned in 1929 he was transferred to a position as a machinist for the Hudson Coal Co. at Pine Ridge colliery. He resided in Laflin all of his life, living at 2 Market St. at the time of his death.

George was a member of the Taylor Lodge of Masons; the Pittston Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons; the Wyoming Valley Commandery, Knights Templar; the Irem Temple of Shriners; and Mt. Horeb Council, Wilkes-Barre. He was a member of the Laflin Methodist Episcopal Church.

Martin and family appear on 1861 census for Fylingdales, where he is listed as a farmer of 211 acres. He is also listed as a farmer on George's birth certificate. Their address in 1861 looks like Wragby Lane?
