When the 1881census was taken, he and his family were staying with his brother George in Painswick, Gloucester. Before that (?) he lived on Whitcombe, St. Aberdare, South Wales. Samuel sailed to the US with brothers George and Job and their families in August 1881 from Liverpool (though obituary says he came in 1881 to join his brothers), arriving in New Orleans on October 27, 1881. They started the Witchell Brothers Lone Star Boot Manufactory, 255 W. Commerce, San Antonio, Texas, but after a disagreement, his brothers left for Kansas City.

In 1883 Samuel established S.B. Witchell Boot and Shoe Manufactory, 218 & 219 Houston Street (Bee Hise Shoe Store mentioned in the obituary?), where with "fifteen male hands" he made "seamless shoes" (which he also invented).Though the amount of annual business transacted was over $30,000, this business apparently failed, so Samuel started a business on Soledad St. where he worked both as a shoemaker and as a "dealer in all kinds of furs, skins, and natural contingencies."

In 1889 Samuel resided at 459 North Flores St. At the time of his death Samuel resided at 525 Zavalla St. in San Antonio.

On February 18, 1834, William was apprenticed to his older brother Moses (a cordwainer in Frampton Cotterell) for 7 years. In the 1841 census he is living with his mother, stepfather (William Stinchcombe) and other family members in Blaenavon (Llanover Upper) and is listed as a cordwainer. In 1851 he is a Master Bootmaker living at 5 New Road(?) in Llanover Upper. In 1861 he is a Master Shoemaker living at 39 Broad Street. He was still at Broad street when he died in 1870. According to an obituary for son Ham, William was the first tradesman to open a boot shop in Blaenavon in Broad St. in the year 1840.

William ran for the Blaenavon Local Board in 1868 (see Free Press for May 2), but was not elected.

William apparently passed the business on to his son Henry, who in turn passed it on to his son H. S. (Bert) Witchell. According to captions on pictures in the various volumes of Blaenavon through the Ages the shop was located at the corner of Broad and Market. It was still in existence in the early 1900's but was gone by 1934. Parents: William WITCHELL and Hanna WITCHELL.

In 1870 the Abersychan District Board approved plans for a factory and warehouse for Witchell's Shoe Manufactory. In 1871 William and family were living in Upper High Street, Trevethin and he employed 31 men, 4(?) women, and 2 boys. In April 1882 Witchell's Boot Factory held the Second Annual Dinner for Operatives (abt. 140 in attendance) and in May of that same year his employees presented W. B. Witchell with an oil painting of himself. In 1891 William lived at Brynderwen House in Abersychan and was wealthy enough to have both a cook and a house maid. In 1903 and 1905 he used the Brynderwen house to qualify to vote. In October 1908 the factory was offered for sale by Auction at the Crown Hotel, Ponypool.
