John WITCHELL was born between 1844 and 1851 in Henbury or Hallen, Gloucester, England.⁽¹⁶⁶⁾⁽¹⁶²⁾ In the 1851 census, John has a son john, listed as 7 yrs. old, born in Henbury. In the 1881 census he has a son John, age 30, born in Hallen. I do not know if these are the same son. Parents: John WITCHELL and Mary UNKNOWN.

Jonas WITCHELL⁽¹⁹⁸⁾ was born about 1722. This date is based on his age at death. He died in 1807 in St. James Parish, Westerleigh, Gloucester, England. He was buried on 18 Feb 1807 in St. James Parish.⁽³⁵⁾ Jonas was 84 years old when he died. Among the Hawkesbury (Gloucester) Witchells in the IGI, there are three christenings (Thomas 1742, William 1744 and John 1747) where the parents are listed as Jonas and Mary Witchell. The Hawkesbury Bishops Transcripts also shows a Jane Witchell, parents Jonas and Mary, christened May 6, 1750. It is possible, though not likely, that the Hawkesbury Jonas and Mary are the same as the Pucklechurch/Westerleigh Jonas and Mary. The "not likely" is partly because there is a burial headstone for Mary, wife of Jonas, in Hawkesbury (d. 14 Nov. 1785) and a burial record in the Hawkesbury register for Mary Witchell (bur. 18 Nov 1785) as well as a record in the Pucklechurch burial register for Mary wife of Jonas (27 Apr 1786), suggesting the Hawkesbury and Pucklechurch Mary's are not the same woman. The marriage record for the Pucklechurch Jonas and Mary says they are both of that parish.

On a 1768 record of indenture for his son Robert, Jonas is listed as a husbandman. He is also listed as a payee in the Surveyor's records for 1789-1830 that are included in the Westerleigh Parish Chest Records. In 1789 he was paid for 13 1/2 days of Labor on the Highway. In 1791 he is paid for 20 days of labor and (along with Isaac Gibbs) for throwing(?) b(?)rock. He is paid again in 1799 for 82 (?) days of work and for 76 loads of stone. In 1800 he recieved wages for 28 days digging stones, for 87 1/2 days work and for 5 days work. (I have not looked at these records past 1802).

In 1861 Blaenavon census, Mary is living with her family but working as a house maid. At that time, the Witchells and the Taylors were living in the same set of row houses (Victoria Row), and this is undoubtedly how Mary met her husband. Her obituary indicates Mary was a member of the Primative Methodist Church, the Home Mission and the Daughters of St. George in Avoca. Parents: Robert WITCHELL and Hanna THOMAS.

In the 1841 census Moses is listed as a shoemaker living with his family on Chapel Street in Trevethin, Monmouthshire, Wales. In 1851 the family is still living in Trevethin, at 213 Abersychan. The 1851 census shows Moses with one servant, Eliza Evans, age 14. Researcher Brian Foster indicates that in the early 60's Moses' shoe and boot making establishment was located in Main Street, Abersychan and that he employed 11 men, 5 women, and 1 boy.

By the time of the 1871 census, Moses had moved to 33 Broad Street, Blaenavon (Llanover Upper). A November 6, 1869 article in the Free Press of Monmouthshire includes him among the Master shoemakers of Blaenavon (along with his brother William). He is still in Blaenavon in the 1881 census, and the 1884 Kelly Trade Directory of Monmouthshire lists him as a Boot and Shoe Maker on Broad St. At the time his second wife, Eliza, died in 1891 he was retired and living at 3 Burford St. Blaenavon.

When he died, Moses was living on Ffowd Rd., Abersychan, and probably moved back there to live with his son William B. Witchell after his wife died.

According to the Park Street Methodist Church Centenary Anniversary Celebrarion Program, Moses was a church Trustee when they opened June 4, 1885. Mr. W. Witchell gave a 20 pound donation and the organist was Miss Witchell. Miss Witchell might be his daughter Mary Ann, who was unmarried at the time. Parents: William WITCHELL and Hanna WITCHELL.

Unfortunately, much of the 1841 Blaenavon census is faded, and I could not find Robert. In 1851, Robert and family (including half-brothers Richard and Hannon) were living in Stable Yard (Llanwenarth Ultra), and Robert was working as an Iron Miner. By 1861 they had moved nearby to Victoria Row (also Llanwenarth Ultra), and Robert was working as a Coal Miner. He was still in Victoria Row in 1871 and 1881, and continued to work as a coal miner.
