My Stuff
A couple of Mighty Ducks/hockey top ten lists, from what feels like waay back, sent a Ducks e-mail discussion group. Some of the "jokes" are dated (Beanie Babies just happen to be mentioned in both... they must've been really popular), and some are too "inside" (I assume the "football/soccer" thing in one has to do with a list member being a Brit), but regardless, some there's a few entries I still like.

Alaska Athletes
[alaska flag] "Talent Runs Deep" (Anchorage Daily News) - A lengthy article from Dec 2001 about hockey players with Alaska ties. [gomez]

Scott Gomez - A NJ Devils center who, like me, is from Anchorage, and, unlike me, was the NHL's 1999-2000 Rookie of the Year (drafted 27th overall in '98). When told that he was a potential first-round NHL draft pick, this is a guy who said "That kind of news is good for the chicks and stuff." Also did a cameo as an airport clerk in some soap opera, and made post-Cup-winning appearances with some other Devils at a closing of the Stock Exchange, and on the Late Show with David Letterman (which included a spur-of-the-moment visit to a nearby CBS merchandise outlet). Following his recent 2003 Cup win, he made another group appearance as part of the Late Show's segment, "Is This Anything?".
Suz's Scott Gomez Site - Personal tidbits, and pictures.
Tiffy's Scotty Gomez Page - Another female devotee... I guess ol' Scotty's quite the ladies man. Anyway, the site has more or less the same as the above, along with stats and copies of news articles.
Alaska Journal of Commerce - Scott's Special Recognition entry in their "25 Most Powerful Alaskans" list.

Ty Conklin - Born in Anchorage, Conklin played in goal for the University of New Hampshire (losing in the '99 championship game to Maine, a team that included fellow Alaskan Barrett Heisten). Currently the #1 goalie for the Oilers (undrafted, signed in '01).
Barrett Heisten - Also from Anchorage, the left winger played a few games in '01-'02 for the Rangers (drafted 20th overall in '99 by Buffalo), and now plays in the AHL as a Dallas Stars prospect.
Scott Parker - The Sharks "tough guy" started hockey in Eagle River (drafted 20th overall in '98 by Colorado). A recent interview can be found at the Top Shelf site.
Ty Jones - Right winger acquired mid-season by Florida (drafted 16th overall by Chicago in '97) also grew up there.

[boozer]   Carlos Boozer - The forward from Juneau left Duke after his junior season and now plays for Cleveland (drafted in the 2nd round in '02), and has gotten more exposure in his second pro season, becoming one of the league's top rebounders and playing aside LeBron James. And, thanks in some part to attrition, he'll also be a member of the US Olympic squad this summer. An article from the summer of '03 can be found at the team site.
Trajan Langdon - A former star guard at Duke (dubbed with the cheesy-but-kinda-cool nickname of the "Alaskan Assassin" during his hey-day), the pride of Anchorage was left unwanted by the Cavs(!) two years ago and now plays in a European league.

[schilling]  Curt Schilling - A little-known fact: this veteran pitcher/ace/fireballer/hurler was born in Anchorage, though he's more often mentioned as having grown up in Arizona. Won the 2001 World Series co-MVP as a D-Back and is now part of the formidable Red Sox rotation.
Shawn Chacon - Anchorage-born righty stater-turned-closer for the Colorado Rockies (poor guy). Made the All-Star team in 2003 (only the second Rockies pitcher to do so), but missed out on playing due to injury. He's about a month-and-a-half older than me, but like Schilling, he's a heckuva lot bigger than me.
Josh Phelps - The third-year power-hitting DH for the Toronto Blue Jays was also born in Anchorage but moved to Idaho before his first birthday. He's about three months younger than me, but like the previous two, is also a heckuva lot bigger. An April '03 interview can be found at ESPN.com.
Dave Williams - Anchorage-born lefty pitching prospect for the hapless Pittsburgh Pirates. Went to Deleware Tech Community College.

Mark Schlereth - Currently an ESPN analyst, the former NFL guard for the Broncos and Redskins played from '89 to 2000, winning 3 Super Bowls, and underwent a whopping 29 surgeries in his lifetime.

My list of non-athlete Alaska celebs can be found here. A list so short I've been forced to include fictional characters. I guess when you walk around town with your face covered by the hood of your parka, you don't get the proper recognition for your good looks and charisma. Alas.

Links
Anaheim Angels - Still 2002 champs!
Rally Monkey - Fan page dedicated to the Angels mascot who get a little too much national pub during the postseason. As great as the li'l guy was, I predict it will wear its welcome within two seasons.

Anaheim Mighty Ducks - "I am a Mighty Duck... but I'd much rather just say that I play in Anaheim."
Ducks-n-Pucks Group at Yahoo - This crazy bunch of guys and gals have been around for quite some time, going back to the early years in the form of an e-mail discussion list.
LA Times Ducks coverage - Probably the best place for regular articles and reports.

New Jersey Devils - Regrettably, the 2003 Stanley Cup champs. Happy for Scotty G, but definitely not for Friesen. Damn him.

ESPN - Like any sports fan, I watch the channel all the time, but man, those SportsCenter anchors sure have gotten smug and obnoxiously jokey over the years (gibberish yelling during home run highlights makes me change the channel). Everyone wants to be Olbermann and Patrick. Kenny Mayne actually is funny though... He's not hooked up right.
ESPN Radio's Todd Wright AllNight - Graveyard-shift show that's pretty much the only one I ever listen to. He puts on an entertaining program, and even talk hockey from time to time. And for better or worse, he'll also venture into non-sports fare (TV, music, and the like). Check here for audio clips from old shows and nightly recaps.
ESPN.com's Here's Looking at You - If you're like me and are cursed with noticing how some celebrities resemble others, here's a hilarious compilation for the sports world.
