Ehmann Genealogy

Also the Koperski and Gallagher Families

... about me

I am a Professor Emeritus (Chemistry) at the University of Kentucky. I was born in Madison, Wisconsin and my wife, Nancy Gallagher, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

... my family

I have assembled genealogical data for my branch of the Ehmann family back to the early 1500s in the area of the Rems Valley near Stuttgart, Germany (specifically the towns of Endersbach, Grossheppach, Esslingen, and Goppingen). The name was known as early as 1336 in Esslingen. Another Ehmann family is known in the Black Forest area near Baiersbronn and Freudenstadt with records back to about 1508. Still another family is from Hochdorf in the Pfalz district of Germany. I have not been able to find any connection between the Black Forest or Hochdorf lines and my Rems Valley line. Individuals from my line immigrated to Iowa and Wisconsin. Individuals from the Black Forest line immigrated to New York, Colorado, and California. A branch of my line (originally from Endersbach) immigrated to Klosterdorf near Odessa, Russia, and later settled in Saskatchewan, Canada. My earliest Ehmann is Bernhart (Äymann) Ehmann, born before 1525, probably in Endersbach. My Grandfather Ferdinand (born in Grossheppach in 1833) immigrated to Northern Wisconsin in ~1880. His wife Friedrike (Reinhardt) and nine living children joined him in 1881.

... my interests

I am interested in genealogical information that might lead to establishing connections between the several Ehmann lines from Württemberg and also on related families including Koperski, Kryshak, Mehleis (Northern Wisconsin), Gallagher (Chicago Area), Berens, and Erwin. Joseph Koperski and wife, Frances Kryshak (born 1864), came to Wausau, Wisconsin in ~1882 from Posen, Poland. Joseph (born 1860), a soldier in the Polish army, apparently was of German descent. My earliest Gallagher is James Gallagher (born in Chicago, about 1840-45). His wife, Mary (Reynolds), was born in Ireland and they settled in Chicago. My earliest Mehleis is John Nicholas Mehleis (Muhleis), born in 1826. His wife, Gertrude Berens (Behrens) was probably born in Württemberg in 1840. Gertrude's Father, Nicholas, was listed in the 1880 Census as having been born in Prussia. My earliest Erwin is Andrew Erwin born in County Sligo, Ireland in 1776.
