A BIT ABOUT WYNY: NBC's FM station played one of the most
successful adult contemporary formats of the 1970s in New York
radio. "Saturday With Sinatra", call-in shows with Dr.
Ruth and Joyce Brothers and a mix of straight-ahead-play the music personalities
made 'YNY a favorite among the 25+ crowd.
Despite a merry-go-round of adult contemporary formats from
New York radio stations in the ten years of 'YNYs stint, it remained
consistent. WNSR/WMXV, WPLJ, and WPIX tried but had trouble matching the
success of WYNY.
In July of 1987, WYNY surprised the New York radio audience
by dropping its adult contemporary format and switching to country. A
hole in the market had been left as longtime country AM station 1050 WHN
switched calls to WFAN to spawn an innovative all-sports radio network.
During September of 1988, a sale of WYNY and WQHT
necessiated a frequency "flip flop". WYNY was now found at the
103.5 frequency and known as "Country 103.5".
The country format remained until 1996, when yet another
sale prompted a complete format switch. The station "stunted"
for a week before changing its calls to WKTU and playing a rhythm 40 format.
Today, no major country music station is available in the
New York market. However, listeners can find WYNY's new calls at the
107.1 frequency broadcasting a much weaker signal.out of small-market stations
in New Jersey.

(*REAL AUDIO*) Randy Davis/Steve O'Brien August 1982 (*REAL AUDIO*)
Randy Davis sits in for
Dan Daniel on an unusually cool summer evening in 1982. Among the musical
selections heard: "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" by Chicago,
"Daniel" by Elton John, "Kiss On My List" by Hall &
Oates and "Don't You Want Me" by The Human League--a big hit at that
time. Steve O'Brien comes in about halfway through the aircheck.
This sound file shows WYNY's successful formula of an adult
contemporary without sounding boring.
