A BIT ABOUT WPIX:  If ever there was a radio station that couldn't settle on a format, it was WPIX.
'PIX tried to be everything:  A broad-based adult contemporary, a ground-breaking top 40, and even a progressive disco station.
Some of WPIXs best-known slogans: "The Ballads & The Beat" (which affirmed it as a disco station/soft AC)  "Love Songs, Nothing But Lovesongs" (a try at a soft AC) , "Pix Penthouse" (evening programming which surfaced and resurfaced).
Throughout the 1970s, however, WPIX nearly outdid WABC 770 AM for the top 40 audience.  Through the later part of the decade, WPIX battled out with WXLO ("99X").
In the summer of 1988, WPIX changed its calls to WQCD to become "CD 101.9".  The station is now a successful jazz/new age/AC format.  It is one of the most unique sounding stations on the dial.

This is a collage of sounds from WPIX in 1982.  Notice how the station is still promoting "stereo music" despite the fact that nearly all stations in New York were now broadcasting in FM Stereo
