Jesse Lilly

Jesse Lilly was born on August 31, 1895 in Manassa, Conejos County, Colorado. He was the fifth child born to James Lilly and Lula Florence Crum: Walter, Wallace John, Maude Harriet, Willard, Jesse, Alfred, and Elsie.

He was married to Belva Opal Carlisle, daughter of George Benton Carlisle and Nellie Vanita Shepherd on August 19, 1922 in Klamath Falls, Oregon. They were the parents of two children, Robert Joseph and Virginia Mae.

Jesse passed away on July 26, 1978 in Klamath Falls. Below is an article written about him in the "Now and Then with Kropffs and Crums" book.

On August 31, 1895, there was born to Mr & Mrs. James Lilly of Manassa, Colorado, a tiny baby boy. He was tiny, weighing 5 lbs at birth, nor did he gain much in the next few insuing years until he was about twelve did he make much progress. Then he seemed to simply explode, and his classmates called him "Heavy." So did his yearing for knowledge grow by leaps and bounds. Everything readable was read, even by the old dim kerosene lamps. Consequently suffered his eyesight and he wore glasses then the rest of his life. He was offered a scholarship to Denver which was not used for want of funds.

Then came a hitch in the Army at Fort-Lewis Washington, where he was a bugler for an M.P. unit.

Wedlock at the age of 26 to a fine girl, gave the inspiration for a home and family. Consequently a steady trend of employement in both wholesale and retail food business, gave the answer to both.

In a lighter vain, many happy boyhood hours were spent playing the trumpet, as well as hunting and fishing. Somehow, some way, his mother Lula Florence, bought this boy a new Buescher trumpet intending to pay for it in installments by working as a laundress. This lad however turned the trick and paid for his horn himself by playing for dances in the village orchestra.

Many happy summer hours were spent in the high Colorado Rockies, trout fishing in the swift cold streams to be found there. Then the wonderlust struck and on to Oregon, where he found his life mate and thus began the serious part of his life.

Now at the age when most men are retired, still active as store keeper and guide to fishing guests, so continues the life and career of one who is eternally thankful for more than his share of blessings.
