Note from Bruce E. Walkup:
Would you like to know, as I do, if you are indeed directly related to other Wauchopes of various spellings around the globe? I learned through an article in the SEP/OCT 2003 issue of “The Highlander” magazine that this knowledge is now within our grasp. I have officially commenced a Wauchope Surname DNA Project through the company Family Tree DNA. The discounted cost for such a study (Y-DNA: 12 Marker Match) is $101 per test, plus return postage. The test requires a simple swabbing of the inside cheek. Turn around time for results is about 5-7 weeks. We each retain ownership of our own DNA. The company preserves the DNA for 25 years for your exclusive use. I have volunteered to be the required group administrator. I will discreetly track results for the study on my web site. I have submitted my DNA sample as a genetic representative for the Joseph Vachub/Walkup line mentioned below. I have also identified at least the following modern male lines to be represented in the study:
Wauchope of Niddrie, also including -
Capt. Robert Andrew Wauch(ope) in Australia in 1836
Capt. John Wauchope in Australia in 1839
Wauchope of Ulster
Wauchope of US/Canada
Wauchob of Ulster
George Walkup of Massachusetts (c. 1698)
John Waughop of Maryland (c. 1653)
Wachob of Pennsylvania
Walkup of United Kingdom
Purported sons of Samuel and Nancy Wauchope of Ulster (c. 1724) -
Joseph Vachub/Walkup (d. Feb. 6, 1787 in Rockbridge County,
Virginia, USA)
James Alexander Waughop/Walkup (d. Feb. 1, 1798 in Union County,
North Carolina, USA)
Arthur Walkup (d. 1834 Lexington, Virginia)
Others, including -
Wahab
Waugh
Warcop
Bauchope

Haplogroup Information:
Analysis of Results:
It appears the Wahab, Wauchope and Waugh test subjects (14728, 14914, 101486 and 113592 respectively) may have a common male ancestor, but quite some time ago as the mismatching alleles are not fast mutating. Also, the Walkup (14349, 14721, and 15141), Wachob (14727), and Wauchope (19689) test subjects clearly have a common male ancestor, but a different one from the aforementioned subjects. Only alleles for the fast mutating DYS # 385a and 385b do not match, indicating the common ancestor was likely in the not too distant past. This bolsters the tradition that Joseph, James Alexander, and Arthur Walkup were brothers or closely related (the test subjects ancestors). It does not appear that these Walkups/Wauchope (including me) or Wachob are directly related through the male line to the Wauchopes of Niddrie, Scotland. It is still possible they were related through a female line, as was the case with the Don-Wauchopes of Edmonstone. This other line of Wauchopes likely originated independently from Wauchopedale of Dumfriesshire (more likely) or Roxburghshire, Scotland. The need for further test results is indicated to verify this hypothesis.
Due to the difference in three alleles, the relationship through the male line between Walkup test subjects 14349, 22596 and 96593 is unclear. They all claim the same Joseph Vachub as an ancestor. However, there is a unexpectedly close match between Walkup subjects 22596 and 96593 with 59390 (refer to notes 3 and 4 above). Based on these limited results, there seems to be some confusion as to which subjects truly originated from which related male lines.
