He had one black boy named Jack ($700), one black man named Reuben ($600), and one black girl named Tilly ($550). In comparison, his best horse, a two-year-old filly, was only appraised for $80.

One of his colts ran away across the mountains and he followed to rescue the animal. He stopped at a home in Greenbrier County, West Virginia for a drink of water and there saw Sarah McCoy. It was love at first sight as the report goes. He decided to marry Miss McCOY. They went first to near Marietta, Ohio and remained there for about a year before leaving for Browns Township, Miami County, Ohio in March 1817. He was a leading citizen in this section of Ohio known as Squire William WALKUP. He died Oct 1837 in the 60th year of his age. Joseph WALKUP (1D) served as a captain in the War of 1812, and in 1820 was one of the trustees of the Spring Creek Presbyterian Church, which was located on one acre of land formerly belonging to his brother, Christopher (1E-9) at Renick, Greenbrier Co., West Virginia. Some time before 1818 he had built his home, a part of the house now in use on the farm. In those days it was a fine house made of hewn logs, ceiled with poplar planks that had been sawed with a whipsaw. (The logs were rolled up on a platform on which one man stood, and with another man underneath, worked the saw. Two or three average length planks a day was considered a good day's work.) The joists and floor sleepers and other heavy parts were hewed out with axes or adzes. All the nails then, both for building and shoeing horses, were made by hand in the local blacksmith shops from long rods of iron or steel brought into the county by wagon train, or by teamsters who went over into Virginia for all kinds of wares. Just in front of the house, which faced east, ran a rude wagon road, coming from Brushy Flat, Renicks valley and other northern points, and leading to Bowen's grist mill at the mouth of Spring Creek. Traces of this old road can still be seen in the pasture fields. The farm was not lonely, for every day folks passed with teams, in sleds or on horseback with grists for the mill, which was busy from rise to set of sun. One can imagine the busy days on the old farm then, without the aid of mowing machines, wheat binders or any common machinery, let alone the motorized equipment of today. The only horse drawn implements were the wooden molding-board plow, the sled, and maybe a rough cart or wagon. Joseph and his helpers cleared the land with poleaxes, burned the logs and brush, and sometimes even dug up fields by hand with heavy hoes made in the nearest blacksmith shop. Hoes and axes were very important tools in those days. When a man wore the bit off his axe he took it to the blacksmith and had it upset; that is, had a piece of steel welded into the bit and ground down into a thin edge.

There was an old-fashioned well a few yards from the house, and one day Joseph's two-year-old son, Christopher Rusk (1D-11), fell into it. Joseph, working at the far end of the place, was hurriedly set for, and came as fast as he possible could, to find on his breathless arrival that his six-year-old daughter, Jamima (1D-9), had been let down into the well by bucket and rope and had brought Christopher safely up, more frightened than hurt. But in his rush to reach the house Joseph had overtaxed his heart, and from that day was an invalid until his death a few months later in April 1840.

The farm was quite large when Joseph died. Money had been scarce, but land was cheap. Each child of the twelve received a share. The eldest could not have been more than eighteen, but the widow stayed on her dowry interest and managed to get enough farming done to support them all, and all twelve lived to raise families of their own. In time all had sold or traded their lands until only the widow dower interest remained in the WALKUP name. Three of the sons served in the Civil War, one as a lieutenant. There were ten Negroes on the farm, valued in the appraisal at $3,430.00, but Joseph had promised them their freedom and they were never sold. The oldest, Reuben, lived in his little cabin under an apple tree just south of the main house until his death many years later, and the others gradually drifted away. Polly WALKUP died late in 1870, and Christopher Rusk WALKUP (he of the well incident), bought out the interests of the other heirs in his mother's dowry interest and moved into the old home.

Both Joseph WALKUP and Mary Hamilton BYRD are buried in what we think is now called Billy Williams cemetery near John Joseph WALKUP's farm SE of Renick on land that was owned by the BYRD's.

Christopher R. WALKUP (1E-9) led a party of settlers from Greenbrier County, West Virginia into McHenry County, Illinois in the spring of 1835, right after the county was opened for settlement. (Actually it was illegal to settle until July 1, 1836 under the treaty with the various Native American tribes made in Chicago in 1833). He surveyed part of the town of Crystal Lake (current population 30,000) and the street, which serves as the East/West dividing line in the numbering system, is Walkup Avenue. He was the first Sheriff in the county when it assumed its present form in 1840. After the death of his wife, Sabina BEARD, in 1955, Christopher went to Kansas, but four years later returned to Abingdon, Knox County, Illinois where he lived the rest of his life.

Sometime during the War between the States, Robert RENICK, his brother Calvin RENICK, Clark HANNA, and Christopher Rusk WALKUP (1D-11) were on the road between Renick (Falling Springs) and Frankford, West Virginia going to Frankford about one mile out of Frankford, they were captured by a scouting party of Union soldiers. It seems a large force of Union men were to camp near Hillsboro that night and this scouting party was to join them there. So our boys were made to face about and go to Hillsboro.

In route to Hillsboro that day Robert, who was a Free Mason, had the opportunity to talk with a yank Captain who was also a Mason. The Captain agreed that he would not report any prisoners and that after they went into camp between sundown and dark, the boys had already agreed to try to get away. Everything was or looked like confusion (but was not). Men were leading horses to water, men were feeding horses, men were building fires, some were cooking supper. Everybody seemed to be very busy. Calvin had not agreed to the plan, that is to ride their own horses out, he wanted to leave the horses and walk out, which he did. Now Calvin had a very fine Kentucky Mare, which he hated to leave so he told Christopher to take her out and keep her for his own. Christopher did bring her out, but he gave her back to Calvin.

Christopher knew the country around Hillsboro well, having gone to school there, staying with Uncle Joe BEARD, so he took the lead somewhat in advance, leading his own horse and riding Calvin's horse.

Christopher had laid down several stake and rider fences (the only kind of fence known in those days), when he heard a horse galloping, coming up in his rear, thinking the Yankees were after them Christopher dropped the horse he was leading and was about to take off when he heard Clark say to Robert, "I got the best bridle they had." In the dark, and some distance apart, they had not missed Clark who had coveted that silver mounted bridle on the Captain's horse and had stayed behind to get it, not steal, but capture it (they didn't steal during the War, they just captured and anything you got off the enemy was yours). Of course, Robert and Christopher were scared almost out of their wits. Robert had a very sharp tongue and when riled he could use it to perfection. So after his heart got out of his throat and back to where it belonged, he proceeded to lambaste Clark for scaring him. He started out by giving him fits for treating the Yank Captain so bad after he had been so good as to allow their escape, and wound up by saying "you blooming idiot, why didn't you bring the horse and saddle along with the bridle?

James Franklin Walkup (1B) was born in 1852 in Greenbrier Co., West Virginia, where he was trained to the duties of farm life. In 1870 he came to Taylor Co., Iowa, where for six summers he was employed at farm labor. For four winters he continued his studies in the schools of Taylor Co., his earlier education having been acquired in the schools of his native county. After completing his education he was engaged for two winters as a teacher, but he continued to farm during the summers.

Following their marriage in 1880, James and Mary located on an 80 acre farm in Clayton Twp., Taylor Co., which James had bought previously. After about four years, however, he disposed of that land and purchased 160 acres in Gay Twp., Taylor Co. This tract was but partly cleared but in due time James had the entire place under cultivation. He further improved the farm by erecting a house and outbuildings, setting out an orchard, and building fences. As time passed and the sale of his crops brought him good financial returns, he invested his money in more land from time to time until he had 240 acres. In 1908 he erected a modern and substantial farm residence and added more outbuildings. In addition to carrying on general farming he annually raised a carload of hogs. James also owned another farm of 80 acres, which he rented.

James was a democrat. For a number of years he served as township trustee, while he also filled the office of road supervisor and had been identified with the school board as a director. Popular and public-spirited, he was chosen by his party as a delegate to county conventions. He was a member of the Baptist church.

Samuel Joseph WALKUP (1C-5) was born near Jamesport, Missouri on 21 May 1857. His mother died when he was two years of age and soon thereafter his father went back to his former home in West Virginia, taking his four small children on a six week trip by covered wagon. There the children stayed with relatives while the father fought for the Confederate Army.

In 1876 Samuel came to Bedford, Iowa, attended school there and also taught school in Iowa. In September 1881, he came to Warrensburg, Missouri and entered the state normal school. In 1884 he answered the call to the ministry. In 1887 he married his sister-in-law's sister, Sarah Ann MEEHAN. They had their first child while he sought a Bachelors of Divinity at Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tennessee. He graduated from there in 1891.

His first charge was at Montrose, Missouri, where two more children were born to he and Sarah. He also served as pastor at Watson, Mt. Hebron Church near Odessa and Belton before going to Deepwater where he held services at Lowry City, Brownington, Coal, Mt. Caramel and Chalk Level in addition to his duties in Deepwater.

On 22 Apr 1912, the youngest child, John, suffered internal injuries while attempting to ride a colt. On 28 Apr 1912, John expressed a desire that his graduation oration be published since his injuries would prevent his attendance at graduation exercises. John died that night and his oration was read to those at graduation.

In 1938, Samuel retired after having served as Presbyterian Minister in Deepwater for 31 years. He suffered a broken hip in a fall at his home 17 Jul 1944 and since then had been confined to his bed. Samuel's heart was saddened when his daughter, Lydia, came home from her school duties in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to spend her last few days before she died on 12 Nov 1944. During that Christmas season Samuel caught pneumonia and died shortly thereafter on 02 Jan 1945.

Byron Stuben WALKUP (1C-6) was born in West Virginia in 1869. When he was a small boy he went with his family to Missouri, but on reaching the legal age of maturity the spirit of the pioneer filled him. He started out on a long trip west to start life for himself in a new country. He landed in Rosalia, Washington in 1890. He worked there until he began to hear of a new country where fertile river lands could be had simply by filing a homestead and improving the land into rich farms. He set out to see this new country and came to Santa, Idaho in 1895. He filed on a homestead on Emerald Creek between Fernwood and Clarikia after receiving a patent to his farm from the government. He moved into Santa and there he met Miss Nora RENFRO who later became his wife. After his marriage he started a freight line and a stage from Santa to Fernwood which he conducted until 1904 when he became an equal third partner to the Trueman and Wunderlich stage line. This business was continued with the pioneers handling the mail, freight and passenger service between St. Maries and Fernwood, serving all the intermediate points until the branch line of the Milwaukee Railroad was completed over the same route and received a charter from the government to carry the mail. Much of their freight and passenger service had been lost to the railroad, but they accepted the progress they had helped to build and sold their teams, wagons, and stages. At such time, Byron moved to Fernwood, where his wife's mother was owner of the hotel and the largest mercantile business in town. Byron was in ill health for the last three years of his life and died the day after he was brought to Plotts Hospital in St. Maries.

Glenn William WALKUP (A) graduated high school at Bedford, Iowa, attended a year at Ames College, then taught country school in Gay, Jefferson, and Clayton townships (Taylor Co.) and at Guss. He then went to school at Omaha, Nebraska and worked as a stenographer. He later came back to Bedford, joined the Masons, and worked at Lakes Hardware Store until he left for the Armed Service in April 1918. His wife, Gladys, had their first child while staying with her folks. This child, Violet Pauline (A-1), was the first war baby of Ringgold County. Glenn returned in June 1919 and after helping with harvest, he began a home on the Lenox Road a half mile north of No. 2 Highway, in Gay Twp., Taylor Co., Iowa. His younger brother, Frank (1B-5), who had been in the Marines stationed in Cuba, came home and helped dig the basement until he went back to Montana. In the last of February, Glenn's family moved into a five-room home, where they continued to live for the next 11 years. This house burned down in about 1965 when the GORMANs were living there.

The first child son, Harold John (A-2) was born there and always loved horses as soon as he knew what they were and would play with driving shoes as if they were horses, so he had lots of fun driving his Mom's high-top white wedding shoes, calling them his grey horses, Snap and Lucy after their first team. Pauline and Harold had lots of fun playing together. She would tell her grandparents things to buy him for Christmas (things she liked) and she would say, "I'll take him by his little hand and lead him to school," even before she started school at the age of four. She wanted to go to high school like her cousin Floyd GORDON did. She said she wanted to be a teacher and said, "I'll be a good one, won't I, Mama?"

In 1923 Pauline had another brother. He was named Robert James (A-3); Robert for his great grandfather Robert Maxwell FINCH (4C), and James for his grandfather James Franklin WALKUP (1B), so the name pleased both sides of the family. He was the ball player as soon as he could throw, even before he walked. He didn't like to be away from home very well.

In 1924 the grandparents told Pauline, "You have another baby brother." She wanted a sister. He was named Donald Forest (A-4), but not for anyone they knew. When he got big enough to play, he was always digging ponds and getting water and making rivers on play farms. (No wonder he went into the navy.) Donald enjoyed visiting his grandmother and her neighbors and got along well with older people.

The next boy was named Ralph William, but the doctor switched the names on the birth certificate, so he became William Ralph (A-5), William for his father Glenn William WALKUP (A) and Ralph from his uncle Frank Ralph WALKUP (1B-5). He liked to visit his grandparents in Bedford, but only for a short time, but he would say, "Grandma, you will just have to take me home." Now Harold had a team to drive; Robert, Donald, and Ralph would play like the colts.

The next boy was named Wilbur Leroy (A-6), and nicknamed Willie, though Gladys didn't like nicknames. Pauline didn't even look at him for a day or so, because she was so disappointed that he wasn't a girl. The family had thrashers the day of his birth, so they always said that he got there to help thrash. He was always such a jolly, good baby and would rock himself to sleep by standing up in the chair.

The family outgrew their house and it was too far for the little ones to walk to school. The roads were often muddy, and Robert got stuck in the road once, so James Franklin WALKUP had them move to where Earl and Maude GORDON (1B-3) lived on his homeplace. He wanted the GORDONs to move where Glenn's family was, but they preferred to move to Bedford. Glenn's family moved on 1 Jan 1930 in a light drizzle, but in two weeks it got real cold and things froze up hard. That fall Donald started to school, then Ralph started the next year. The first day he wanted to wear his new overalls his dad had bought him. His Aunt Blanche (1B-1) said, "Why don't you wear your little suits, you look so cute in them?" He said, "I look cute in my overalls."

He didn't miss a day his first year, though one day the kids carried him as he didn't feel good. Willie would go out to the front yard gate to wait for them, the dog with him. They all got through country school at Gay No. 4, and off to high school. Pauline, Donald and Ralph graduated from Bedford, while Harold and Robert went there their first year and then switched to Blockton. Willie went all four years to Blockton.

Pauline graduated from Maryville College at Missouri, taught for five years, and then married Robert DENTON, whom she had met in college. They eventually settled in Houston, Texas after having lived in Fort Worth, Texas (twice); San Antonio and Lubbock, Texas; and Atlanta, Georgia. During WWII Robert DENTON taught mathematics and ground flight training at Hicks Airfield,

Eagle Mountain Lake, Texas. Later he became affiliated with Cyclone Fence division of US Steel Corporation, where he was sales engineer at the time of his death. He was active in youth work and an elder of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, Houston, Texas.

All five boys were in WWII at the same time. Harold was in the Air Corp Signal Corp in the Pacific theatre in New Guinea. Robert was with Patton's Third Army in France and Germany. Donald was in the Navy Landing Craft in Italy. Ralph was in the Air Corp in Texas and Mississippi. Willie was in the Sea Bees in Japan.

After the war, Harold chose farming and got some real horses. Robert worked at the Blockton Elevator and then for the post office there. Donald and Ralph went to the Camp Dodge Ames Annex for one year. Willie went one year to Simpson, then all three boys graduated from Maryville College. Donald taught a short while at Barnard, Missouri, and then went to Omaha and worked for Wilson Packing, sold insurance and then worked for the postal department. Ralph worked at several things before teaching in Republican City, Nebraska and then Manilla, Iowa where he met Joyce CARPER who was also teaching there. They married and called Des Moines, Sioux City, Mitchell, South Dakota, Altoona and then Ankeny, Iowa home. (Upon leaving Mitchell, Ralph couldn't make up his mind on whether to find work in either the Omaha or Des Moines areas, so he flipped a coin and ended up in the Des Moines area.) He worked as an inspector for John Deere and for a number of years also ran a cleaning service.

Willie taught at Grant City, a few weeks in Blockton and Malvern and then worked for the (CGW) railroad as a depot agent a couple of places. He was agent in Blockton until it closed in 1967. He then taught at Humeston, Mormon Trails Schools for three years. From 1970 he worked for the (CNW) railroad.

Harold's wife Annabel (A-2) is the youngest child of John F. HAIDSIAK and Anna C. HOLM. John was the eldest son of a German immigrant and was born 21 Feb 1880, and died 5 Jan 1938. Anna was the daughter of a Swedish immigrant and was born 24 Jul 1883, and died 29 Jan 1975.

Harold J. and Annabel were married 24 Jul 1949 in the Methodist Church in Blockton, IA. The ceremony was simple, but the candlelight and the sanctuary filled with baskets of gladioli raised by the bride's mother made it extra beautiful.

Temperatures soared on the hot July evening and brothers and sisters on both sides had impishly added an "extra secret" ingredient to the punch bowl. Nevertheless, it did not go undetected by the eldest sister of the bride, Helen, who unceremoniously dumped it down the kitchen drain. Brothers, alike, mournfully lamented "the loss" and said, "She could have poured it into a dishpan for us and not wasted it."

Prior to marriage, Annabel taught school. She had graduated as the last Normal Training student in 1944 from Blockton High School. Annabel was issued a War Emergency certificate and began teaching in Grant township. The next years were spent at "Red Top" west of Blockton and in Blockton Elementary.

Harold J. was inducted into the Army November, 1942, and served his country during World War II, seeing action in the Pacific Theater.

Harold and Annabel's first home was on a farm south of Blockton, IA, but in 1951 they moved to Blockton. Besides farming in the Blockton area, Harold was farming near Redding, IA, and in 1955 the family moved to the Redding community where they have since resided.

Harold John WALKUP and Annabel HAIDSIAK had the following children:
1 Michael Glenn WALKUP
2 Dale Eugene WALKUP
3 John David WALKUP

Wilbur Leroy WALKUP (A-6), the youngest son of Glenn and Gladys (CORDELL) WALKUP, was born August 11, 1927 and passed away August 3, 1996 from a massive heart attack.

He was welcomed into the family of love by sister Pauline and brothers Harold, Robert, Donald and Ralph. Early childhood and youth days were spent on the family farm. Willie attended the West Gay country school and obtained his high school education at Blockton High, graduating in 1945. While in high school Willie displayed his athletic abilities on the basketball court and the baseball field. Numerous escapades in high school will long be remembered by his classmates.

Willie served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman First Class. He was a member of the Blockton American Legion Post #443. After his service discharge Willie furthered his education by attending Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa and Northwest Missouri State Teachers College in Maryville, Missouri. His academic intellect was admired by many associates. Willie's teaching and coaching career included schools at Malvern, Grant City and Humeston. Later employment included working for Chicago Great Western Railroad; being in partnership with his son, Red, in farming and dozer work; coaching girls basketball at Humeston and Russell, and his work with challenged youths at FOCUS in the Leon Hospital. Willie's working career wore many hats, but he derived his most enjoyment and satisfaction working with young people, often meeting with them to mete out advice or to just talk and more importantly to listen. He always had time for everyone.

On July 15, 1964 Willie and Helen were united in marriage and dedicated their love and lives to each other and then to their eight children: David, Duane, Doug, Drexal, Debbie, Tina, Tom and Sam. Each child is special and a delight to Willie and Helen. One of their happiest times was to be surrounded by their family. This love grew and multiplied with each grandchild and then each great-grandchild.

Willie is survived by his wife Helen; sons David, Duane and wife Cindy, Doug and wife Julie, Drexal and wife Lora, son-in-law Gary CLEAR, daughter Tina and husband Harold DYE, sons Tom and Sam; twenty grandchildren; mother-in-law Irene McCONOHAY; sister Pauline DENTON; brother Ralph and wife Joyce; sisters-in-law Mary Lou WALKUP and Annabel WALKUP; numerous nieces and nephews; and lots of friends.

Willie was proceeded in death by his parents Glenn and Gladys; his brothers Harold, Bob and Don; his beloved daughter Debbie; his brother-in-law Robert DENTON; and his sister-in-law Wilma WALKUP.

Willie was looking forward to returning to his work at FOCUS and also to coaching girls basketball at Russell, but it was not to be.

Willie believed in the redeeming grace and love of his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.

He will be missed.

"Don't walk in front of me-
I may not follow-
Don't walk behind me-
I may not lead-
Walk beside me-
And just be my friend."
