This phenomenal 5000+ acre wilderness area really is in the middle of nowhere. I arrived a day after there had been severe flooding to the north along the San Juan River. After walking a brief distance from the parking lot, it became necessary to cross a small wash that cut me off from the majority of the wilderness area. Once I had detoured some distance to the left past the source of much of the water in the wash, I was able to jump across into semi solid ground. The entire approach from there was slick muddy sand that coated my boots, some of which travels with me to this day.
