| Greetings! My name is Mike Cowart. Welcome to the WA5CMI page. I was first licensed WN5CMI in May, 1962, at the age of 14. I became WA5CMI the next year when I upgraded to General. I have held an Extra Class license since 1973. I enjoy many aspects of ham radio, especially rag chewing, DXing, and collecting "boat anchors." The picture above shows me with my recently restored Globe King 500. It's a blast using the old tube gear. Not long ago, I used to poke fun at a buddy of mine for having to "peak-and-dip" his tube final. Now I do it. It's hard to explain the appeal of the tube gear. It has a soul, an aura about it. The modern rice boxes certainly have the technology but no personality. I'm sure that nostalgia has more to do with it than anything else (lots of fellow baby-boomers are getting into the BA "cult"), but I know there are young guys in the boat anchor scene as well. Would you like to hear my Globe King? Click here to hear what it sounded like one October night in Arlington, Texas on 75 meters. I am signing with my good friend John, WB5NUA, now K5XL. Globe King 500 Sound I would REALLY appreciate you signing my guestbook. Or, drop me a line (email). I would love to hear from you.
