REPLACING
TONGUE JACK:
ON YOUR VINTAGE CAMPER You
have
two choices if your tongue jack quits working. You can
replace it or if the problems is the gears inside the top part, then
there is a source for replacements. The part kit that you need
for one on a Serro Scotty is from the
Trailer Parts Superstore in Newark DE. Bulldog Trailer Jack Sidewind Gear Kit # 500106. It was $8.69 and nearly the same for shipping ($6.97). Now, if you feel the need or it is necessary to replace the entire jack, then you have a couple of choices. First, you could get a bolt on replacement jack that bolts onto the side rail of your hitch. The one pictured swings up to give you more clearance when out on the road. This model has option to get the solid feet or a wheel for the bottom of the jack. I found these at J.C. Whitney Co. But, they are available at most RV stores and places like Wal Mart, etc. The price on this model ranged from ~ $40 -50 depending on the capacity, either 1000 or 2000 pounds. ![]() This type of bolt on jack is available in a stationary model too. These are available too, but will require a little work. First you will need to remove the old jack. You can do this by cutting the top part off close to the weld and then grind off the weld and then you should be able to get the bottom part out. Sidewinder Jacks with Triangular Mounting plate are available with top or side crank handles. Zinc-plated jacks fit 4" and 5" frames with 14" travel. Gives you extra room to crank your jack. The mounting flange is at the bottom of outer tube and bolts on with 3 bolts. I assume you could also weld this on or get a model that could be welded on. This type was also priced at $40 - 50 at an RV parts store. ![]() Now, if you wanted to spend say around 200 bucks, well you could get a power jack to raise and lower your Scotty. The one I saw was an RV Power Tongue Jack from Barker Manufacturing company and has a lifting capacity of 2,500 lbs. These provide quality and convenience at an economical price. Emergency crank adapter is included with the jack in case of no electric. ______________________________________________________________ Web page created by Larry Bush: Sept.17.2007 --- Edited: 5. 12. 2009 Serro Scotty ~ Vintage Campers © All Rights Reserved ________________________________________________ |
