Photograph of vintage shield in White River Junction, Vermont

I found this vintage US 4 sign on Bridge Street in White River Junction, Vermont in 1990. By this time, US 4 had been realigned further west to cross the White River further upriver, bypassing downtown White River Junction. I found the sign completely by accident. In January 1990, the Bridge Street Bridge over the White River in White River Junction collapsed after ice weakened its supports. (A US Army Corps of Engineers report has information about why the bridge collapsed and a couple of pictures on page 2 of the bridge both before and after the collapse. It's a PDF document, so you'll need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the document, if you don't already have it.) I remember the eyewitness accounts of the collapse from motorists who were on the bridge at the time were pretty amazing. Luckily no one was killed, although I think a few cars did end up in the river after their drivers escaped by running off the bridge.

I had stopped in the spring of 1990 to take some pictures of the collapsed bridge (you could still see parts of the roadway under water). When I was taking a picture of my car on the bridge approach roadway, I noticed the old reassurance sign for US 4 still standing at the bridge entrance and included it in a couple of the pictures. I assume by now the bridge was been replaced, and the sign removed.
