Route History for US 1 in South Carolina

• In 1926, US 1 was called SC 50 between the North Carolina state line and Columbia, and SC 12 between Columbia and the Georgia state line. These roads followed the same path as US 1 does today, except between Aiken and Clearwater, were SC 12 followed what is now called SC 421. The entire route in South Carolina was improved (not paved) in 1926.
• By 1928, the route had been renumbered US 1, and the section from Aiken to the Georgia state line had been paved.
• By 1963, US 1 between Aiken and the Georgia state line had been realigned to its present location, and widened to 4 lanes.
• Between 1966 and 1970, I 20 was completed between Lugoff and Lexington, and between Aiken and the Georgia state line, replacing US 1 as a major through route in these areas.
• By 1974, I 20 had been completed from Camden to the Georgia state line, replacing US 1 as a major through route.
