In the mid-1920s, thirty years before the creation of the Eisenhower Interstate System by the United States federal government, the individual state highway departments, through the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), worked together to simplify interstate travel for American motorists. They developed a countrywide highway numbering system to allow motorists to navigate the growing network of state highways more easily. (More information about the creation of these highways is available from the US Federal Highway Administration website.) Many of these routes still exist today, often referred to as US highways. They are marked with this familiar black and white shield.![]()
Since 1988, I have been driving these highways from end to end. Approximately every 30 to 60 miles, I took a photograph of the road and surrounding landscape. This website contains links to these photos, as well as personal notes from each of my trips. In addition, for each highway, I have descriptions about how the highway has changed since it was first commissioned, and how one would follow an early alignment of the highway driving today’s roads. I have also added links to historical information about the places visited by each road.
