Boom Vang

The vang is used to control the shape of the main.  Under heavy air, the vang will pull down on the boom and flatten the main.  Since the Scot does not have a traveler the vang is used to serve this purpose.

Listed below are some different ways to control tension the vang.

Hopefully you saw the article that was printed in the July/August 2001 issue of Sailing World that featured Kelly Gough and Jeff Grinnan.  This article had pictures and descriptions of the rigging that they used to win the 2001 Mid-winters in Panama City, Florida.  Photographs appeared in the article that showed the seat cleat jib control system that you can find on this site along with the use of a unique method of cleating the Vang.  Kelly Gough uses a Ronstan T-cleat (RF5) mounted to the centerboard trunk.  I do not think that I can reprint the article without permission from Sailing World.  I would prefer that someone provide me pictures of the rig and allow me to post them on this site.

Remember - This site only gets updated if I can obtain new information from other Flying Scot sailors.
