<Now for an interesting story about the search for Ila Mae!>

I had spent almost 20 years looking through Kentucky and Illinois Census books trying to find my grandmother and her ancestors.   Pulling one of the "beginner" boners, I never looked at Tennessee in the 1900 Census.  If I had, I would have found her.
I would like to tell you a little about my search and it may provide clues for you with your brick walls!  I knew her maiden name was Griswell as that was my father's middle name and the one thing I had heard in the family stories that she gave him her maiden name.

I had some pictures of her and two other "girls" taken about 1880/1900 and one was from Fulton, KY and the other two from Paragould, AR.  In 2000 we made a side trip to Paragould and visited the library where they not only had a great "genealogy" room, but a fantastic volunteer - Bettye Busey.  She helped me find the Gilbert family in the 1920 Census and there was my grandmother, with my father, living with her aunt.  She was listed as a widow.  I now had the name of her aunt, Anne M. Gilbert, and knew she had to have been a Griswell also.   It also stated that Anne M. was born in TN.

I then began a search for any Anne M. Griswell Gilbert.  Knowing that she was born before 1860, I looked at the Griswells in the Henderson Co., TN 1860 Census and found an M.A., female, age 9 and her sibling brother, Wm. H., age 1 - her parents were Thomas J. Griswell and Elizabeth.     By 1870, there was no Thomas J. Griswell in the TN Census, so I knew that Anne M. married a Gilbert so I tried to trace her in the 1870 and 1880 Census hoping to find more about the Griswell family.   I found a Margaret A. Gilbert   about the right age in Obion Co., TN with a B. Gilbert.  That led me to the Obion County GenWeb page and to Dennis M. who did lookups for people.  What a break!    I also found P. B. Gilbert and wife Annie M. in the 1880 Census in Hickman Co., KY with their children, especially Laury and Clara, the two girls in the picture with my grandmother.

Dennis undertook the search and  he not only found the marriage of my grandparents, he also found my grandmother's birth date with the name of her parents, Joan E. Gay and William H. Griswell!

I had also posted queries on the Henderson Co., TN GenWeb page and got a response about Thomas J. Griswell, a prisoner of the Confederate, dying at Andersonville, GA during the Civil War.  I ordered his pension record in March of 2001 and received it in October 2001 - all 75 pages - with names, marriage date of Thomas J. and Elizabeth Childers, Elizabeth's death in Weakley Co., TN, etc.

To make a long story short, thanks to some wonderful people, I had finally broken one more brick wall and taken my grandmother back to her great-grandparents.

One reason she was so hard to find is that her father, William H., had died by 1886.  Her grandmother, Elizabeth C., died in 1871; her Gay grandparents had died by 1880 and her mother was dead by 1903 along with a sister.  I have not been able to find her brother after they sold their house in Union City and will continue to search for him.
