The photos and images captured
from video which appear on the following pages are from our trips to Couples
Negril in August and
December 1998, July, October and
late December 1999, July 2000 and late December 2000,
and April 2001.
COUPLES Negril opened
on July 15, 1998. It is situated on Bloody Bay right next to Grand
Lido. Many mature trees and shrubs were retained on the north beach,
so there are plenty of private, shady spots. Overall they have been environmentally-sensitive
in design. This includes creating a number of free-flowing freshwater ponds
in the central gardens, and leaving lots of tall trees in the gardens (even
though this partially blocks the view of the ocean from some of the rooms).
Palms, elephant ears and banana trees abound--you can pick a banana on
the way to breakfast.
Immediately adjacent on the
north end of the property is Riu Tropical Bay, which opened in March, 2001.
Riu took away a large portion of the undeveloped stretch of beachfront
that used to make up the rest of Bloody Bay. But past Riu is still
a sizeable stretch of beach that is undevloped. The beach is still
suitable for long walks or runs. While the opening of COUPLES and
Riu has increased the number of "vendors", the harassment level
is still less than most Jamaican beaches. There are also a number
of interesting, but harmless characters that hang out at the beach near
the Negril Cabins beach club.
