Have you ever wondered what it's like to fly inside a hurricane or typhoon? Well, I've been there and done that! Way back in the early 1980's, I was a navigator in the U.S. Air Force, flying WC-130 weather reconnaissance aircraft. My first assignment was as a "Typhoon Chaser", based on the tropical island of Guam. Then I became a "Hurricane Hunter", and lived in Biloxi, MS. On some missions, I brought along a camera - you can see the results in the following pages. There's an extra seat available, so climb aboard, strap in, and come along with us as we fly right into typhoons and hurricanes - some of nature's most awesome spectacles!
NOTE - For best viewing, make sure your monitor's resolution is set to 1024x768 or higher. Most of the photos are about 800x530 pixels, so setting your monitor to a higher resolution will let you see the entire picture on your screen without having to scroll around. Hint: If you're using Internet Explorer or Firefox, press the "F11" function key (usually along the top row of your keyboard). This will expand your view by hiding the top menu row. Just press "F11" again to bring it back!
Make sure that your monitor is bright enough for you to see good detail. You should be able to make out 20 distinct squares below, from pure white to pure black. Adjust your contrast and brightness for the best results.
