Red was born in Waverly, moved to Florida where Nannom was living with Aunt Sadie and Walter Snow. He was a waltz champion. They moved to Dallas,Texas, where he sold shoes, and where Phillip was born. Red knew Red Skelton who was a soda jerk at that time. They later moved back to Miami, Florida where Red was employed at Florida Power and Light. They moved to Tennessee after WW2 buying the place the children all remember so well and fondly.
Hazel was born, Hazel Edith Cheffer in St. Anne, Illinois, on September 24, 1905. and moved to Baymonet, Alabama at an early age. She was the youngest of three sisters and moved to Miami, Florida to live with her sister Sadie in her teen years. She married Red (Leonard Rains Raney) on June 5, 1925.
