I spent my own very first income from tutoring in traveling
around the island Taiwan with my high school classmates. We all entered National Taiwan University.

At commencement, on behalf of the College of Agriculture
accepting diploma from President Chien, Sih-Liang of
National Taiwan University, 1958. At that time, there was no caps and
gowns for everybody at the commencement. We wore the student uniform, a
kind of military uniform. The cap and gown we wore in the picture was
from the photo studio.

Appointed by The National Taiwan University as a full time
Teaching Assistant (later certified by the Bureau of Education), February 1, 1960.
The basic monthly salary was NT310 with additonal bonuses ending up a total of NT$880.

In the appointment letter, the salary was stated as 140 Gold Coins of the government standard.
Intangibles not stated were paid in kind of Brown Rice, Peanut Oil, Firewood, and Salt based on the family size.
My net pay for the month of July, 1960 was NT$336.10. I paid the income tax of NT$3.90.
The deducted debit of NT$540 was the amount borrowed against my first month (February) salary.
I did not start working until March 1, 1960. In effect, the salary was increased
from NT540 in February to NT$880 in July, 1960.
From a news paper clip, it was me at the top right, serving
as a proctor of the Unified College Entrance Exam, at NTU one of the
Freshmen Classrooms, July, 1960. The current new building at this location
is the Agricultural Displaying Building, on the left side of the main gate.
