The Tournament
CIG For Dummys
By Jumping Jackman
This World Tournament has generated interest in the game like never before. But for those of you new to the game who want a quick rundown of the rules and how things will go, I'm just dumb enough to let you in on it.
CIG stands for Computer Interface Game. Each country has their own slang for the game (Story Matching in France, Death Dueling in Germany) but the International Tournament just calls it CIG for simplicity's sake.
There are two players in each match. One of them plays "offense" and one of them plays "defense." The offensive player sets up a scenario. It can be anything, a simple duel, a puzzle solving story, a romance ... and the offensive player can draw on anything in books, movies, old video games, myths, legends, history, or his or her own imagination. The setting is just the fun part, all that matters is that the defensive player has a realistic chance to win.
Once the scenario is set up, the defensive player enters the virtual reality environment without remembering that this is a game. The defensive player thinks this is real, no matter how fantastical the scenario is. The defensive player is still themselves personalitywise, but they only remember those facts and skills consistent with the setup. This is a true test of personality.
This Tournament is larger than most, if not all professional tournaments, so the rounds are a little different. The first round consists of four games. Three games are played within a Player's bracket. After the first two of those games are played, each Player will play someone outside of his or her bracket. Who will play whom outside the brackets won't be determined until the first two games are played. This is to give Players who started 0-2 a chance by pitting them against each other. 2-0 Players are also pitted against each other to give those behind in the standings a chance by giving the unbeaten Players a chance to lose.
The top two Players in each bracket advance to the second round. If there is a tie for second place within a bracket, there is a playoff with the roles of the two Players reversed from the first time the two met. Three way ties are resolved the same way.
The second round doesn't use the bracket system. Although won-lost records from the first round are used to determine the second round matchups, those wins and losses are wiped away. For elimination purposes, everyone is considered 0-0. The first four players to lose twice are eliminated. The eight second round players play each other round robin until half of their number have been eliminated.
The third round carries over the second round results, so players with one loss can't afford to lose a second game or they are eliminated. The four third round players play each other round robin until two of them have been eliminated.
That brings the two survivors to the fourth and final round. Again, previous records are washed away because the championship round is a best of three contest.
Confused yet? Just wait until you get into how ties are broken or offense and defense is determined!
