The day I got it. My body guru , Jeff, is "driving" |
A few of the features and
plans for my Notch. Subject to change, of course.
It's a '64 body on a '69 pan, IRS, 2688 cc Type IV motor, after market fuel injected, and someday maybe a small turbo. 4 wheel disc brakes, 2" narrowed rear track, BN2 factory installed gas heater, Porsche alloys, all NOS trim, the colour is "Seattle Gray", upgraded 12 volt electrical system, kick'n stereo system, and much, much more. |
|
Mocking up the center mount, T4 auto trans in place |
This is what it looks like now. The center mount is a modified T4 mount. |
|
Just mocking up the rear mount |
Here is the "New Look". Rear mount nor fan housing installed yet. |
|
This is how it looks now. The fitting of all the engine compartment parts and related wiring is under way. |
This shot shows Jeff painting the Por15 on just prior to installing the NOS front apron. you can just see the holes for the BN2 gas heater which will reside in the front trunk |
|
Notice the complete lack of paint inside the air box, definitely done before VW got smart. We painted the inside with epoxy primer. The rear apron was the hardest part of the body restoration. Click here for a description on how this is done.
|
Fitting NOS apron, body has been media blasted. This body had never been hit other than a poke in each of the aprons. No damage to the main shell, and Very Little Rust! I think that every Notch has a bent deck lid from push starting a dead car!! |
|
Here is the pan and front end ready. Porsche 944 blue fuel pump is just visible. All rubber lines were replaced by me, calipers and rotors were all recently replaced on this donor pan. I cleaned the pan and painted it with black Hammerite. Yes, it is rust free!! Lucky me |
Here's the rear suspension basically done.
Just need to upgrade to the disc brakes. Narrowed trailing arms installed,
924 stub axles, gives me T2 sized CVs to match the T4 auto trans. Shocks
are gas ones that were on the pan, I think they are Gabrial shocks, anyway
they will be used.
Click here for a brief description of what I have done here. |
|
The fuel and brake plumbing is all complete, just need to install a couple of brackets. Line loc on aft bulkhead just to the inside of the steering column while the proportioning valve is the black thing in the upper right corner. The shiny aluminum bracket in the lower middle holds the fuel shut off valve for the BN2 heater. 944 Porsche fuel pump is the blue thing just visible behind the axle beam. |

Checking body panel fit. Would you believe that I'm not using these fenders? I got some NOS rear fenders and deck lid. |
Front fender, door, and rear fender are all NOS sheet metal. Yes, the door had some minor damage. We haven't put all the correct trim holes in yet either. |
|
Here is a glimpse of what the dash will look like. A few of the accessories are being fitted. Wiring is almost done. Gauge panel is being developed. Couple of pieces of the carpet are set in place. Stereo is mounted. Making brackets for the Bambus package tray, etc. etc. |
This is part of the Dynamat that is going in. This stuff is very good at cutting down resonance's and noise. With this and the new stock type insulation, it will be "Cruz'r Car" quiet. |
|
The seats and a bit more of the dash. Can you spot something a bit different? Sewfine is the place for upholstery! |
Well, the dash is about done, just a couple of small details and I can say its finished. Can you spot the subtle differences and a few accessories? |
|
Here's the back seat area. The close-out panel behind the arm rest is the grill cloth for the 10" sub woofer. The CD changer is mounted in the kick panel below the rear seat. |
The auxiliary gauge panel was made out of .20" aluminum 2024 T3, held in with chrome socket head fasteners, panel is powder coated "Silver Vein". It houses Oil Temp and Oil Pressure gauges, both VDO and both picked up at local swap meets. The lights and switches control the driving lights and the line loc. The idiot lights let me know that they are "armed". You can also see the later steering column in the early dash in better detail, nice fit I think. BN2 heater control is the green knob. |
|
This is the rear trunk showing it complete prior to adding the screen. On the left is the Haltech brain, fuse panel, and associated relays. On the right is the power amp driving most of the stereo system. Extant amps putting out 200 watts to the sub and 50 each side to the JL 3 way mounted under the package tray. It is mounted to a .67 cubic foot sub woofer enclosure housing a 10" JL W3 It is just about "adequate". |

Been Driving it quite a bit now. The fronts tyres and wheels are now 16x6 Fuchs with 195/50/16s and the backs are 205/55/16s on 16x7s Fuchs. Everything clears just fine, Whew! |
Looking more like a driver everyday. Close to having the outside done. Bumpers need some aligning to suit my tastes. I have seen countless T3s with the "droopy bumper blues". Getting There! |
|
Baby's First Show! Would you believe 4th place in the Type 1 class? Go figure |
Just about the right stance. I'll be adjusting it a bit, plus not the correct rear tyres yet, just about though! Body panel paint by Lanny Hussey. |
