The Academic Phase
The purpose of the first week of any Fulbright teacher exchange is to
provide the knowledge base for the trip. While we did have some free
time, lectures and on-site visits
to museums, schools and historic monuments filled most of our days. The
very competent staff at the Fulbright House which
organizes all of this is led by Dr. P.J. Lavakare, the Executive
Director
of the United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI)
Each morning our group convened for lectures on diverse subjects such as
history,
geography, the educational system and the arts. Lecturers were all
luminaries in their field and several, like Dr. Shobita Punja and Dr.
Primlata Puri
were excedingly relaxed and approachable. In the afternoons,
we visited Hindu temples, mosques, and the National Museums. We
were acompanied to each site by an expert such as Dr. Punja.
