LETTERING
A lesson in BLOCK lettering.
MATERIALS NEEDED for each person
- one piece of white 6 x 10 inch Paper
- several pieces of white 6 x 12 inch paper
- pencil
- ruler
- markers
OBJECTIVES

- Learn about block lettering
- See how famous artists use lettering in their works
STEP ONE
Mark the edges of your paper every two inches
Draw lines from these points to divide your paper into thirty 2 inch squares. (ten in each row)
STEP TWO
Draw the alphabet in block letters so each letter is 2 x 2 inches and each touches all four sides of its square.
STEP THREE
Look at the way Robert Indiana has used block letters to make a wonderful painting of LOVE
STEP FOUR
Take your second piece of 6 x 12 paper. Fold this in half so you have a 6 x 6 card. Divide the front of this folded card to create four equal size squares.
Think of a 4 letter word. Don't use a word if it would embarrass your mother. Some possibilities are: Cool, work, play, kick, jump etc.
Draw one letter in each square. Now, color in everything that is not the letter.
STEP FIVE
Do this again, but use complementary colors to color in your card.
Or, use all cool colors - blues and greens
Or, use all warm colors - red, purple, orange.
Resources
ROY LICHTENSTEIN and ROBERT INDIANA are other artists who use lettering in different ways. Look for examples of their work on the web.
