Engineering and Operations
Inspection Trip
June 18-19, 1998
Rare
Trips for the Adventurous
Engineering & Operations Committee Chair Pat Miller (Calleguas) summoned all
the members of the E&O Committee and assorted other directors to our
annual inspection of district projects. Now Pat is not someone who is
easy to say no to, so we all showed up. And besides we were also anxious to see progress
at Eastside Reservoir near Hemet and a variety of other facilities.
Day One:
Jensen Treatment Plant, Operations
Command Center, Eastside Reservoir
The
Jensen Treatment Plant was the first stop.
Then we went to Magazine Canyon to consider the oil seepage in the Newhall
Feeder.
We next traveled to Pasadena to view other MWD facilities.
But the highlight of the day and
of the trip had to be the visit to the Eastisde
Reservoir, now about 60% and 18 months from filling.
Day
Two:
Lake Skinner, San Jacinto Tunnel,
the Inland Feeder, and Garvey Reservoir.
Lake
Skinner and treatment facility is the
southern section of the developing Riverside County recreation and nature
preserve created by MWD.
At the San
Jacinto Tunnel we inspected a project designed to ensure that a threatening
slope would not cut off this critical control facility for the Colorado
River Aqueduct.
The Inland
Feeder is the connecting link that will bring in state project water
to the Eastside Reservoir. A billion dollar project it consists of
45 miles of large-scale pipes and tunnels through Riverside County.
And of course we had to stop at
Garvey Reservoir.
Special thanks go to all the engineering and operations staff who made this an informative, factual trip. And no one went hungry.
Pictorial Highlights of the Trip
Thanks to the artistry of Director
Robert Huntley (MWD of Orange County) who didn't take any pictures of himself.
