Bullies & School Safety-This Kids on the Block program is designed to create awareness of what constitutes bullying, present problem solving strategies, encourage empathy for the targets of bullies and explore ways that students may be involved in promoting safety in their school.
Child Abuse Prevention-(Physical Abuse)-This program was developed in order to educate children about physical abuse and to make them aware of available services.Key topics covered are explaining and defining physical abuse, encouraging children to talk with an adult, and to understand their feelings.
(Sexual Abuse)-Developed in conjunction with Parent's Anonymous and Arlington County Child protective Services, the script material covers specific issues such as betrayal of trust as a factor in abuse, learning how to tell and tricks that abusive adults might use.
Disability Awareness-Mark Riley(CP),Renaldo Rodriguez(Blindness) and Ellen Jane(Down Syndrome) make it very clear that having a disability doesn't mean CAN'T DO it means CAN DO. All three focus on their individuality and the myths surrounding their particular disability.
Fire Safety-This program features three of the most popular Kids on the Block characters and with them children learn how to prevent fires, how to avoid potentially hazardous situations and how to react appropriately should danger occur.
Health and Safety-Each script used in this program deals with the issue of staying safe. Key topics covered are staying away from strangers,the use of a secret password,the dangers of tobacco and learning the importance of only accepting medicine from an adult who is caring for you.
Multiculturalism-This program is designed to examine how a person might find examples of culture in his or her own life and explore some of the conflicts which may arise when people of varying backgrounds and belief systems come together. The curriculum is designed to explain and define the concept of culture and addresses issues such as, feeling torn between two distinct cultures, identifying one's own culture and learning about holidays.
Substance Abuse Prevention-Through meeting Eric Van Aart children not only learn about substance use but also learn the necessary skills to help them make healthy choices. Script material includes information about alcohol and other drugs, peer pressure and learning how to make choices.
Summer Safety-This program is designed to teach children how to be safe during the summer months. Key topics include pool safety,water safety outside a pool enviorment and bicycle safety.
