Retailers report a sales collapse - Retailers post worst October sales figures since at
least 1971 - Sales at the nation’s largest retailers fell off a cliff in October, casting
fresh doubt on the survival of some chains and signaling that this will PROBABLY BE THE
WEAKEST CHRISTMAS SHOPPING SEASON IN DECADES.
Scientists erase mouse memories - Scientists have developed the ability to selectively
wipe out uncomfortable memories.
In experiments with mice, researchers were able to eliminate memories without any damage to
the rodents' brains.
They suggested that the technique which works on a particular protein in the brain could, one
day, be used to help humans overcome traumatic events.
However, the chief scientist said this was "years or even decades away".
A suit to be worn in the shower - Busyexecutives need no longer waste time by showering
nude - an Australian company has invented a wool suit that can be worn while they wash.
The garment has been specially designed so that it can be cleaned under the showerhead.
There is no need for soaking, dry cleaning - or even soap.
The suit can be worn in the shower, although it is probably better to drape it on a clothes
hanger and carry it instead
The Japanese market has taken a liking to the "shower suit", described as "revolutionary".
A recent spate of UFO sightings around the world has believers in a frenzy.
Former Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell claims extra-terrestrials have been coming to
visit for decades.
He said governments had been covering it up for 60 years.
“I've been in military and intelligence circles, who know that beneath the surface of what
has been public knowledge, yes - we have been visited. Reading the papers recently, it's been
happening quite a bit."
British tabloid The Sun has been leading the UFO charge in the UK, with almost daily
sightings being reported. One story includes a photograph of an object in the sky near a mini
tornado, while on June 20, a police helicopter apparently chased a UFO in the sky above
Cardiff.
A few weeks ago, a UFO spotter at Nowra on the New South Wales south coast reported seeing a
military helicopter following a “rounded triangle shape, about the size of a helicopter
without tail or rotor blades” across a golf course.
Around the same time, residents of a small town in the Northern Territory reported being
terrified by four unidentified flying objects, while in early June an elderly couple on an NT
highway said their car was “dive-bombed” by a UFO.
In March, police in Queensland received several reports of an object glowing orange that
streaked across the sky. Whatever it was, it was never found and nor was there any evidence
that it hit the ground.
Nano-foods - Those consumers already worried about genetically engineered or cloned food
reaching their tables may soon find something else in their trolleys to furrow their brows
over - nano-foods.
Food produced by using nanotechnology is quietly coming onto the market, and concerned citizens want
US authorities to force manufacturers to identify them.
Nanotechnology involves the design and manipulation of materials on molecular scales, smaller
than the width of a human hair and invisible to the naked eye.
Companies using nanotechnology say it can enhance the flavor or nutritional effectiveness of
food.
US health officials generally prefer not to place warning labels on products unless there are
clear reasons for caution or concern. But consumer advocates say uncertainty over health
consequences alone is sufficient cause to justify identifying nano-foods.
American consumers are generally more complacent about genetically modified or cloned foods
than their counterparts in Europe.
New consumer products created through nanotechnology are coming on the market at the rate of
3 to 4 per week.
Nano-products in common use today include lightweight tennis rackets and bicycles, and
sunscreens containing clear, nonwhite versions of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
They also include lipsticks, and many items labelled as anti-microbial that contain silver
ions such as socks, washing machines, salad spinners and food containers.
There is no requirement that nano-products be identified as such.
Recent studies have shown that nano-sized particles in some cases can invade
cells and breach the blood-brain barrier, and that some forms of nano-sized carbon could be
as harmful as asbestos if inhaled in quantity.

popular vote since 1988 is banking on a decisive victory for Democrat Barack Obama in
November.

The collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc "may augur an even larger impending global
'financial tsunami'." Threatened by the financial tsunami, the world must consider building
a financial order no longer dependent on the United States, a leading Chinese state newspaper
said on Wednesday. "The eruption of the U.S. sub-prime crisis has exposed massive loopholes
in the United States' financial oversight and supervision." China is a major buyer of U.S.
Treasury bonds, and through its sovereign wealth fund it has taken stakes in two large U.S.
financial institutions.
Commentary suggested China must brace for grave economic fallout and look to alternatives,
saying the crisis brings to mind the Great Depression of the 1930s.
"Lehman Brothers announced bankruptcy will not only have a domino effect on the global
financial world, it will bring a shock to the world economy."
Arctic border conflict - A senior US Coast Guard commander warns of conflict in the
Arctic unless border disputes are resolved.
Robo-skeleton lets paralysed walk -
A robotic suit is helping people paralysed from the waist down do what was previously
considered impossible - stand, walk and climb stairs.
ReWalk users wear a backpack device and braces on their legs and select the activity they
want from a remote control wrist band.
Leaning forwards activates body sensors setting the robotic legs in motion.
Users walk with crutches, controlling the suit through changes in centre of gravity and upper
body movements.
The device effectively mimics the exoskeletion of a crab.
Mind control helmets - the U.S. Army has just awarded a $4 million contract to begin
developing "thought helmets" that would harness silent brain waves for secure communication
among troops. Ultimately, the Army hopes the project will "lead to direct mental control of
military systems by thought alone." The military's sophisticated system may be a decade or
two away from reality, let alone implementation. Video gamers are eagerly awaiting a crude
commercial version of brain wave technology — a $299 headset from San Francisco-based Emotiv
Systems — in summer 2009.
A "Cyber cold war" waged over the world's computers threatens to become one of the biggest threats to security in the next decade, according to a security report.
Researchers have shown that young chimps outperform adult humans in a memory test, a Concentration-like game using numerals on a computer screen.
“We were very surprised to find this. But it’s a very concrete, simple fact. Young chimps are superior to human adults in a memory task.”
Their ability is similar to the phenomenon called eidetic imagery, in which a person memorizes details of a complex scene at a glance. This so-called photographic memory is present in a very small number of children, and is often associated with autism.
Perhaps somewhere back in common evolution, humans and chimps had this ability. But humans lost it because they gained something else, communicating through a complex language.
Adult chimps lose the ability, too. As the chimps age, their memory capability is likely otherwise occupied.
Britain 'faces power cuts threat' - The UK will experience prolonged power cuts in about
five years unless urgent action is taken, a report warns. A third of generation capacity is
due to be decommissioned by 2020, but is not being replaced fast enough. "The current credit
crunch is a head cold compared to the double pneumonia this country will suffer if we don't
implement an energy policy urgently. That is why security of supply now takes priority over
everything, even climate change."
Save your marriage and the environment -
Increasing incidences of divorce around the world have a negative impact on the environment, leading to a less efficient use of energy and resources and bigger expenditures on utilities.
Can we save the world by 2015? -
This year the UN's Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a series of reports that laid to rest any doubts that global warming is real — and outlined the frightening consequences of continued inaction.
