Felix is our first rabbit, and we are amazed. I never would have guessed that a rabbit would follow us around the house, wanting us to pet his head and play with his ears. He will come to me if I call his name. And what a cuddler! He adores being snuggled. Felix is allowed to run throughout the house, except for the garage and the basement. We had read in books that house rabbits would chew on wood furniture and electrical cords. Apparently, Felix never read those books, because he does not chew. When we are away or sleeping, Felix stays in a very large, two-level cage that Judy designed herself. Felix also returns to his cage to use the bathroom. When he is playful, he loves to run fast. Really fast! And if you toss a toy towards him, he displays his glee by jumping straight up into the air. Inside his cage his favorite toy is a shiny, round biscuit cutter which he enjoys tossing around. |

Felix gets along fine with the ferrets, though he usually does not play with them. But if the ferrets and I are making a ruckus in another room, he will scamper in to watch. In the photo below, Felix is licking Judy’s arm while being cuddled. He will do this for many minutes at a time. For the scientists in the crowd, his licking rate is a constant 210 licks-per-minute. We don’t know if most rabbits lick in affection, but this guy has done it all his life. It is what attracted us to him initially in the pet store. He is a very important part of our family. |

He eats rabbit food from Kaytee and hay from Oxbow, both of which are always available to him. Early on, I had read that rabbits may overeat their pelleted food. So the Kaytee food is dispensed by a machine I built that employs an auger and an electric motor. The automatic feeder holds a three day supply, and feeds him a small amount five times a day. It is controlled using a PIC microcontroller programmed in assembler. Just for fun, the machine makes a noise for ten seconds prior to each feeding. Felix will run to his cage and jump up to the second level awaiting the food when he hears the tone. He has a water bottle inside his cage, and an electric water fountain in the kitchen. He loves lapping up the water, and does not seem to mind that his chin gets sopping wet every time! |

Rabbits are very clean animals; they wash and groom themselves often. They never need to be bathed. They really do not need brushing, either, but it is an excellent way to bond with the bunny. A soft cat brush is very much appreciated by Felix. His absolute favorite pastime is simply sitting in our laps on the sofa, while watching TV. He never pays attention, though. Instead he slowly drifts off to sleep. |
